According to foundationalism, mathematical propositions form a complex objective structure we have to discover and in which each proposition depends for its truth on the propositions that precede and ground it. Proofs that only establish the truth of their conclusions are contrasted with proofs that give also the objective reason of that truth. Foundationalism claims that the cognitive resources required by these proofs are universally available. This paper tries to undermine that claim and to show that foundationalism is a dead (...) end. Cet article est une lecture critique de l'ouvrage de Catherine Malabou L'avenir de Hegel. Plasticité. Temporalité. Dialectique (Vrin, 1996) selon lequel le concept hégélien de temps excède la signification qu'en a proposée Heidegger. Il y a en fait plusieurs temps dans la pensée spéculative et cette richesse du temps peut être nommée sa plasticité (Plaztizitàt) : formation de l'événement, explosion de l'inattendu, avenir ou « voir venir » . Tout en saluant la pertinence et la nouveauté de cette interprétation, Derrida (...) se demande si l'on peut jamais voir venir ce qui vient. L'avenir véritable n'est-il pas un adieu non dialectisable, partant non plastique, à tout processus de formation, d'anticipation, de deuil? Cet adieu ne demeure-t-il pas l'impensé de la philosophie hégélienne ? This paper is a critical reading of Catherine Malabou's book on the future of Hegel. (Vrin, 1996) according to which the Hegelian notion of time goes much further beyond the meaning that had been suggested by Heidegger. There are in fact several times within the spéculative thought and such a wealth oftime may be termed plasticity (Plaztizitàt) : the surge of an event, the explosion of the unexpected, the future, or the idea of what is bound to corne. Whilst at the same time acknowledging the relevance and the newness of such an interprétation, Derrida questions whether one is ever able to perceive what is bound to corne. Isn't the true future an undialectizable and non plastic farewell to any kind of conception, anticipation and mourning process ? Doesn't such a farewell remain what is left unthought in Hegelian philosophy ? (shrink)

Beth has tried to vindicate the kantian doctrine of mathematical intuition in the frame of contemporary logic. The paper proposes a critical evaluation of this attempt. The theory of mathematical intuition that is exposed in the Critic of Pure Reason is twofold: on one hand, the intuition of the "first principles", as it is analyzed in the Aesthetics, on the other hand, the intuition which is involved in the proofs, as it is analyzed in the Methodology. Contrasting with most defenders (...) of Kant, who try to show that the first kind of intuition remains, in some way, compatible with the non-euclidean geometries, Beth wants to defend the second kind of intuition, by suggesting that it is nothing else than the "instanciation" method, well-known in the predicate calculus. I show that this strategy of defending Kant is unsuccessful. (shrink)

Pour se repérer dans l'immense labyrinthe que forme l'œuvre de Husserl, telle qu'elle nous est enfin devenue accessible aujourd'hui grâce aux publications des Archives de Louvain, il faut y prendre pour fil d'Ariane la décomposition du versant subjectif de l'intentionnalité en ses trois modes : son mode perceptif, son mode imaginaire et son mode signitif, en la situant à l'arrière de celle de son versant objectif en un a priori synthétique matériel et un a priori analytique formel. Il s'agit bien (...) là, en effet, du double invariant structural autour duquel sont venus s'ordonner tous les déplacements thématiques où a dû s'engager Husserl avant de parvenir à fonder la phénoménologie transcendantale, en y prenant toujours davantage de distance par rapport aux conditions de fonctionnement actuelles de l'intentionnalité. Et Husserl put alors résoudre l'énigme qu'elles posent au départ : en tendant à faire croire à tort que ces deux versants n'auraient jamais été séparés par rien, alors que les lois d'essence qui régissent les rapports entre leurs éléments respectifs ont toujours été et resteront toujours irréductiblement dissymétriques. Aussi la question devait-elle finir par se poser : de savoir si la phénoménologie est axiomatisable à l'aide d'un modèle rigoureux. Peut-elle prendre appui, pour procéder au traitement de cet a priori subjectif, sur le paradigme fourni, au terme de son histoire, par la mathesis universalis? Et devra-t-elle même se donner plusieurs systèmes d'axiomes, afin de rendre compte par là des différents genres de phases de développement à la fois généalogiques et téléologiques par où passe et repasse sans cesse toute vie intentionnelle?
