RésuméLa notion de système joue un rôle essentiel en physique. Les difficulté actuelles de la physique théorique résident en grande partie dans cette notion même. A chaque étape du développement de la physique il a fallu imaginer un processus nouveau pour effacer partiellement la coupure introduite dans la description de l'univers par la considération d'un système. Nous examinons ici le dernier procédé ou théorie fonctionnelle du corpuscule, qui consiste à se servir, pour la représentation du corpuscule, d'une image plus complète (...) que celles utilisées jusqu'ici, celle d'une fonction u d'un espace fonctionnel séparable. On s'occupe de la logique quantique depuis 1935 et pendant cette période beaucoup de résultats ont été obtenus, encore me suis-je abstenu de mentionner les résultats obtenus ces dernières années par les logiciens dans ce domaine. Certains de ces résultats ont un intérêt direct pour les théories physiques. En particulier on voit de quelles conditions impératives on doit tenir compte quand on effectue un changement de théorie pour passer à une théorie meilleure. RésuméLes aspects théoriques les plus fondamentaux de la notion de complémentarité sont successivement étudiés.Dans la première partie la notion de complémentarité de Bohr est précisée et on montre de quelle façon cette notion est venue profoundément modifier les conceptions physiques. Dans une seconde partie la théorie générale des prévisions est résumée et ses principaux résultats sont énoncés pour permettre de mener ? une façon précise une discussion sur la notion de complémentarité: le problème des prévisions est ? abord posé, puis (...) décomposé en trois problèmes successifs grâce àľ introduction des eAléments initiaux et des eAléments de prévision.LCaron; opérateur ?évolution est ensuite défini. Puis on montre de quelle manière le calcul des prévisions conduit à une généralisation de la décomposition spectrale. II intervient alors une certaine fonction f dont la forme est déterminée. La notion de grandeur ?état est alors définie; lorsqu'il existe une telle grandeur le formalisme du calcul des prévisions se simplifle et se ramène au schèma ? un point en mouvement dans un espace de phases. Une théorie dans laquelle il existe une grandeur ?état est appelée théorie objectiviste. Par opposition une théorie telle qu'il n'existe pas de grandeur ?état est appelée théorie subjeetiviste. La fonction f a la forme |x|k; la constante k dans une théorie subjectiviste a une valeur unique et il est montré que k = 2: on établit ainsi comme un théorème le principe de décomposition spectrale, et cela pour toute théorie subjectiviste. On définit ensuite les grandeurs neutres, puis on fait la distinction entre les propriétés qui ont lieu en fait et celles qui ont lieu en droit. Les notions de déterminisme et dcaron; indéterminisme sont définies et il est montré qu'il n'y a que deux types de théories physiques: les théories objectivistes qui sont déterministes, et les théories subjectivistes qui sont essentiellement indéterministes.Dans la troisième partie la notion de complémentarité est diseutée en utilisant les résultats de la théorie générale des prévisions. On montre qu'il n'y a pas de complémentarités dans une théorie objectiviste et qu'au contraire il y en a nécessairement dans une théorie subjectiviste. Deux types de complémentarités peuvent se présenter: une complémentarité effective et une complèmentarité idéate, mais en fait il y a toujours des complémentarités effectives. Ensuite on examine les observations successives et les conditions qui se présentent suivant les complémentarités; on précise ce qu'on doit entendre par grandeurs complémentaires.La quatrième partie est consacrée à une interprétation du quantum ? action. Les différents aspects de la notion de quantification sont examinés , puis la constante de Planck est introduite au moyen de la notion de spin et au moyen du principe ? homomorphisme. Ľ origine de la subjectivité est examinée; un principe de subjectivité est énoncé et doit ètre mis à la base des théories de la microphysique; au contraire un principe ? objectivité doit ètre mis à la base de la physique macroscopique.La cinquième partie concerne les rapports entre les notions de complémentarité et ? indiscernabilité.Enfin la complémentarité de Bohr apparaît sous un aspect dialectique quand on ľ envisage comme provenant de ľ unification de deux théories qui s'opposaient au moyen ? un dépassement . – J.‐L. Our goal here is to help identify the contextualist’s most worthy competitor to relativism. Recently, some philosophers of language and linguists have argued that, while there are contextualist-friendly semantic theories of deontic modals that fit with the relativist’s challenge data, the best such theories are not Lewis-Kratzer-style semantic theories. If correct, this would be important: It would show that the theory that has for many years enjoyed the status of the default view of modals in English and other languages is (...) in need of revision. Here we defend the default view by showing how a Kratzer-style semantics is able to make available readings of the relevant utterances that fit with the pretheoretical judgments opponents purport it cannot fully capture. Having established this, we turn to considering the more theoretical grounds proponents have offered for preferring their rival contextualist views. Here the question is to what extent such grounds favor semantic over what Korta and Perry call “near-side pragmatic” explanations of our judgments. In particular, we argue that our favored readings figure in near-side pragmatic explanations of those judgments that possess the methodological and theoretical advantages of systematicity and unity at least as well as, if not to a greater extent than, those of opponents who argue for their revised semantic theories on the basis of these advantages. The aim of this essay is to understand the relationship between knowledge and society and to reflect on the links between science and political decision making. The text evolved from a number of reflections the author made while president of the European Astronomical Society, president of the Swiss Academy of Sciences and vice-president of the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC). The book starts by using astronomy as a showcase for what science brings to society in terms of intellectual enrichment, (...) of practical tools and of societal inputs. It then turns to looking generally at science as a human endeavour for which pleasure is a prime motivation and it describes the efforts made by researchers to rationalise their findings, thus making them universally acceptable. The author also describes the role of science in shaping our environment and discusses resulting responsibility of the scientists with respect to the evolution of the world. As part of an analysis of the relationship between science and policy the author describes the way in which scientists can (and must) bring knowledge in the political decision making process. The argument is closed with considerations on global governance, while the conclusion puts evidence based decision making processes in relation with the more emotional aspects of our behaviour. The readership of the book is intended to be all scientists involved in "science for policy" activities, as well as those who should become more active in this domain. This includes, but is not limited to, all members of science academies. Astronomers will find specific elements to help them think about their science. The intended readers of the book also include civil servants and policy makers who develop legislation and societal action in domains in which a solid knowledge base is important. The book should furthermore be of interest to citizens following public life and all those worried by the "post evidence" trends in policy. (shrink)

The Global Burden of Disease Study is one of the largest-scale research collaborations in global health, producing critical data for researchers, policy-makers, and health workers about more than 350 diseases, injuries, and risk factors. Such an undertaking is, of course, extremely complex from an empirical perspective. But it also raises complex ethical and philosophical questions. In this volume, a group of leading philosophers, economists, epidemiologists, and policy scholars identify and discuss these philosophical questions. Better appreciating the philosophical dimensions of a (...) study like the GBD can make possible a more sophisticated interpretation of its results, and it can improve epidemiological studies in the future, so that they are better suited to produce results that help us to improve global health. The evolutionary implications of environmental change due to organismic action remain a controversial issue, after a decades—long debate on the subject. Much of this debate has been conducted in qualitative fashion, despite the availability of mathematical models for organism–environment interactions, and for gene frequencies when allele fitness can be related to exploitation of a particular environmental resource. In this article we focus on representative models dealing with niche construction, ecosystem engineering, the Gaia Hypothesis and community interactions of Lotka–Volterra type, and (...) show that their quantitative character helps bring into sharper focus the similarities and differences among their respective theoretical contexts. Physical arguments stemming from the theory of black-hole thermodynamics are used to put constraints on the dynamics of closed-string tachyon condensation in Scherk–Schwarz compactifications. A geometrical interpretation of the tachyon condensation involves an effective capping of a noncontractible cycle, thus removing the very topology that supports the tachyons. A semiclassical regime is identified in which the matching between the tachyon condensation and the black-hole instability flow is possible. We formulate a generalized correspondence principle and illustrate it in several different circumstances: (...) an Euclidean interpretation of the transition from strings to black holes across the Hagedorn temperature and instabilities in the brane-antibrane system.
