  1. The significance and scope of evolutionary developmental biology: a vision for the 21st century.A. P. Moczek, K. E. Sears, A. Stollewerk, P. J. Wittkopp, P. Diggle, I. Dworkin, C. Ledon-Rettig, D. Q. Mattus, S. Roth, E. Abouheif, F. D. Brown, C.-H. Chiu, C. S. Cohen & A. W. De Tomaso - 2015 - Evolution & Development 17:198–219.
Evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) has undergone dramatic transformations since its emergence as a distinct discipline. This paper aims to highlight the scope, power, and future promise of evo-devo to transform and unify diverse aspects of biology. We articulate key questions at the core of eleven biological disciplines—from Evolution, Development, Paleontology, and Neurobiology to Cellular and Molecular Biology, Quantitative Genetics, Human Diseases, Ecology, Agriculture and Science Education, and lastly, Evolutionary Developmental Biology itself—and discuss why evo-devo is uniquely situated to substantially improve (...)

When I refer to ‘modern editors’ I mean the following: S. G. Owen, who edited the Tristia thrice and produced a small commentary on the first book and a large one on the second ; C. Landi ; R. Ehwald-Fr. W. Levy ; A. L. Wheeler ; J. André ; Georg Luck, 1968–72, 1977 ).

I cite manuscripts from my own collations. Information about most of these manuscripts, and explanation of the symbols by which I designate them, may be found in A. Turyn, The Byzantine Manuscript Tradition of the Tragedies of Euripides , K. Matthiessen, Studien zur Textüberlieferung der Euripideischen Hekabe , and D. J. Mastronarde and J. M. Bremer, The Textual Tradition of Euripides' Phoinissai . I shall discuss the affiliations and the relative value of these manuscripts on a later occasion. For the (...)

    Laws of the Logical Calculi.Carroll Morgan & J. W. Sanders - 1989
"This document records some important laws of classical predicate logic. It is designed as a reservoir to be tapped by users of logic, in system development. Though a systematic presentation is attempted, many of the laws appear just because they happen to be useful.".

  24. Conceptual issues in the reunion of development and evolution.J. W. Atkinson - 1992 - Synthese 91 (1-2):93 - 110.
Recently a growing number of biologists have begun to consider the causal role that processes of embryonic development may play in evolution. This constitutes a reunion of these phenomena which had been linked in the nineteenth century through Haeckel's biogenetic law. This reunion may result in a new subdiscipline of biology, if there is a set of unique concepts and methods which tie the various research approaches together. Such concepts as bauplan, canalization, and developmental constraint, may serve in such a (...)

A Perspective on Implementation of Technology-Driven Exergames for Adults as Telerehabilitation Services.Cécil J. W. Meulenberg, Eling D. de Bruin & Uros Marusic - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
A major concern of public health authorities is to also encourage adults to be exposed to enriched environments during the pandemic lockdown, as was recently the case worldwide during the COVID-19 outbreak. Games for adults that require physical activity, known as exergames, offer opportunities here. In particular, the output of the gaming industry nowadays offers computer games with extended reality which combines real and virtual environments and refers to human-machine interactions generated by computers and wearable technologies. For example, playing the (...)

Jaw protrusion, an optimization of the feeding apparatus of teleosts?J. W. M. Osse - 1985 - Acta Biotheoretica 34 (2-4):219-232.
A comparison of nineteen taxa of teleost fishes suggests the gradual acquisition of systems of upper jaw protrusion in the course of fish evolution. However, in view of the loss of protrusion in several groups of advanced teleosts the biomechanicsof protrusile jaws are analysed based on the hydrodynamics of suction feeding. Calculations show that protrusion may reduce the energy otherwise spent in a feeding act to get the predator's mouth as near to the prey in the same time with about (...)

The most promising way to regard thought experiment is as a species of experiment, alongside concrete experiment. Of the authors who take this view, many portray thought experiment as possessing evidential significance intrinsically. In contrast, concrete experiment is nowadays most convincingly portrayed as acquiring evidential significance in a particular area of science at a particular time in consequence of the persuasive efforts of scientists. I argue that the claim that thought experiment possesses evidential significance intrinsically is contradicted by the history (...)

The project, entertained by Leibniz and others, of creating an ideal language to facilitate ratiocination, is investigated in detail. Six possible relations between the ideal language (IL) and the natural language (NL) it replaces are studied. (1) IL says exactly what NL says, but says it much more clearly. (2) IL says exactly what NL says, but does so more economically. (3) IL says exactly what NL says, but does so more succinctly. (4) IL says part of what NL says, (...)
