In this article I elucidate a conception of small worlds, or ‘ontological’ contexts, within the curriculum that stand out and beyond the horizon of technological‐scientific reality, which might be linked with forgotten, marginal ways of being and thinking. As I attempt to demonstrate, it is possible that such ontological worlds apart from technology's ‘Enframing’ effect might inspire the type of meditative thinking in our classrooms that is consistent with Heidegger's notion of authentic worldly dwelling as it appears in the later (...) writings of the 1930s, or the ‘turn’. Tenseless theories of time entail that the only temporal properties exemplified by events are earlier than, simultaneous with, and later than. Such an account seems to conflict with our common experience of time, which suggests that the present moment is ontologically unique and that time flows. Some have argued that only a tensed account of time, one in which past, present and future are objective properties, can do justice to our experience. Any theory that claims that the world is different (...) from how we experience it must nonetheless be consistent with the having of that experience. Accordingly, in this essay I defend the tenseless theory by arguing that it can indeed account for certain key features of our experience of time without recourse to tensed properties. (shrink)

Late Babylonian astronomical texts contain records of the stationary points of the outer planets using three different notational formats: Type S where the position is given relative to a Normal Star and whether it is an eastern or western station is noted, Type I which is similar to Type S except that the Normal Star is replaced by a reference to a zodiacal sign, and Type Z the position is given by reference to a zodiacal sign, but no indication of (...) whether the station is an eastern or western station is included. In these records, the date of the station is sometimes preceded by the terms in and/or EN. We have created a database of station records in order to determine whether there was any pattern in the use of these notation types over time or an association with any bias in the station date or the type of text the station was recorded in. Predictive texts, which include Almanacs and Normal Star Almanacs, almost always use Type Z notation, while the Diaries, compilations, and Goal-Year Texts use all three types. Type Z records almost never include in or EN, while other types seem to include these interchangeably. When compared with modern computed station dates, the records show bias toward earlier dates, suggesting that the Babylonians were observing dates when the planets appeared to stop moving rather than the true station. Overlapping reports, where a station on the same date was recorded in two or more texts, suggest that predicted station dates were used to guide observations, and that the planet’s position on the predicted stationary date was the true point of the observation rather than the specific date of the stationary point. It is impossible to deduce the properties of a strongly emergent whole from a complete knowledge of the properties of its constituents, according to C. D. Broad, when those constituents are isolated from the whole or when they are constituents of other wholes. Elanor Taylor proposes the Collapse Problem. Macro-level property p supposedly emerges when its micro-level components combine in relation r. However, each component has the property that it can combine with the others in r to produce p. Broad’s (...) nondeducibility criterion is not met. This article argues that the amount of information required for r is physically impossible. Strong Emergence does not collapse. But the Collapse Problem does. Belief in Strong Emergence is strongly warranted. Strong Emergence occurs whenever it is physically impossible to deduce how components, in a specific relation, would combine to produce a whole with p. Almost always, that is impossible. ‘Right reason’. The English words render, somehow or other, the Greek orthos logos, the Latin recta ratio. Not that ratio does much justice to the Greek logos. It limits its scope, or at least would do so if it were not employed in a special “Greek” manner by philosophical users. Indeed all three phrases, Greek, Latin and English are in the nature of counters; none has an obvious and unambiguous sense. There seems to have been a long-standing argument, or at (...) least a disagreement, in antiquity about orthos logos and its role in accounts of the behaviour of the good man, parts of which would repay at least brief discussion, if only to highlight some of the ambiguity I have mentioned. Es un texto apto para ensayar un dialogo polémico sobre cuestiones de fondo. Especialmente pertinente es el estudio del concepto de autonomía moral y de las consecuencias epistemológicas y éticas de la idea de ciencia presentadas por el autor (...) y con las que este trabajo pretende confrontarse desde una perspectiva explícitamente creyente. Este breve trabajo trata de presentar a personas poco expertas en temas filosóficos esa realidad cotidiana y misteriosa que es el valor. Se pone en relación la dimensión axiológica con las etapas biográficas del ser humano, en especial, con la de la juventud -a quien esta comunicación se dirigía-. Y, puesto que hoy es un tema recurrente el de la crisis de los valores, se trata de entender en que estriba esa famosa crisis.

La pensée contemporaine est-elle accessible au concept biblique de fin de l'histoire ? Les sciences de l'univers et celles de la vie ont répandu, à l'aide de diverses notions de temps, des scénarios de fin du monde qui renvoient à la philosophie la question angoissante de l'avenir de l'humanité. Dans le passé, les gnoses avaient élaboré une représentation du temps brisé, que les philosophies modernes ont entrepris de démythologiser de bien des façons : morales purement rationalistes, qui tantôt acceptent tantôt (...) refusent l'idée d'une fin morale, morales utopiques, vision d'un cosmos régi par des lois mécaniques, vision d'une histoire dépourvue de sens et de finalité.Cependant, si la temporalité est inscrite au cœur du réel, la question de la fin ne peut pas être éludée. De nos jours, la pensée de la mort est le lieu d'une interrogation métaphysique sur l'être ; la philosophie de l'histoire pense la fin à la lumière d'une exigence de justice ; la pensée de l'altérité est la postulation d'un dépassement du temps ; dans l'éthique de l'action, la notion d'événement introduit à une destinée de liberté ouverte sur une transcendance ; l'analyse du langage symbolique dévoile la dimension eschatologique de la raison dans sa recherche du vrai : autant d'ouvertures philosophiques sur l'espérance théologale. Is contemporaneous thought accessible to the biblical concept of the end of history ? With the help of different notions of time, universe and life-sciences have spread scenarios of the world’s end that pass on to philosophy the anguishing question of the future of humanity. In the past, gnostics elaborated a representation of broken time, which modern philosophies went about demythologizing in diverse ways : purely rationalistic morals, which at one time accept and another time refuse the idea of a moral end, utopian morals, vision of a cosmos ruled by mechanical laws, and the vision of a history empty of meaning and finality.Nevertheless, if temporality is inscribed in the heart of the real, the question of the end cannot be avoided. In our time, thinking about death leads to a metaphysical interrogation about being ; the philosophy of history thinks about the end in light of a demand for justice ; the idea of alterity postulates the overcoming of time; in the ethics of action, the notion of event introduces a destiny of freedom open to transcendence ; the analysis of symbolic language unveils the eschatological dimension of reason in its search for the true, – these are some of the philosophical openings to theological hope.
