Harold Laski (Manchester, 1893-Londres, 1950) es de los pocos teóricos del Estado en el mundo anglo-sajón que, desde John Stuart Mill, merece ser recordado. Sus teorías se desenvuelven en el tránsito del pensamiento liberal a la acción de tipo socialista. Fue miembro de la renombrada Fabian Society aunque renunció a su puesto en el Comité Ejecutivo Fabiano aduciendo incompatibilidad de opiniones, pues no aceptaba la posición "gradualista" y evolucionista de la socialdemocracia. Además formó parte del comité ejecutivo del partido (...) laboralista -aunque con serias disensiones con el premier MacDonald-, que debería estudiar los cambios originados en la acción socialista tras la primera Guerra Mundial. A su renombre puede haber ayudado el hecho de haber enseñado en las prestigiosas universidades de Mac-Gill de Montreal y en Harvard. De todas formas, a pesar de ser un pensador que extrajo sus teorías de la práctica y dar a sus aportaciones un contenido pragmático, como Hobbes o Locke, no se puede parangonar en ningún caso con ellos. Se trata -a pesar de sus bandazos- de un intelectual independiente de izquierda, postura que afirmó en su pertenencia al partido laborista. De esta suerte su teoría política pudo fundarse en la ética, que como se verá no se deja entremezclar con el materialismo histórico marxista. El Estado en la teoría y en la práctica corresponde al período en el que busca un acomodamiento de la teoría del Estado a las nuevas circunstancias, una fase que el autor inicia en la década de los treinta del siglo XX. Es un libro que desarrolla y amplía, como él deja claro, su libro anterior, La Democracia en crisis (1933), que también fuera traducido para Revista de Derecho Privado, y supone un perfeccionamiento de sus principios filosóficos. Laski se ocupa de diagnosticar las causas del fracaso y avanza un proyecto de teoría social que se propone desenvolver en el marco de ocho años. Este plan sería corregido después de colaboraciones en simposios y de publicaciones en diversas revistas junto a un grupo de adalides del socialismo, entre los que cabe destacar a Bernard Shaw, J.A. Hobson o Lowes Dickinson entre otros. Este libro, que se vertió al castellano en 1936, fue traducido por Vicente Herrero Ayllón. INDICE. Laski, Harold J. The Foundations of Sovereignty and Other Essays.

This essay considers the intricate relationship between the thought of William James and the political theory of Harold J. Laski mainly in the years 1915 to 1930. I suggest James's arguments and vocabulary have a greater presence in Laski's work than has been previously detailed. The links between James's and Laski's thought are apparent in Laski's accounts of the self and his descriptions of the nature and structure of social experience; each of these in some way (...) derives from James's psychology, empiricist metaphysics and pragmatic method. The links are demonstrated by Laski's explicit references to James's ideas in his books and letters as well as in his adoption of Jamesian terms, phrases and motifs. This essay also shows that in applying James's ideas to political life Laski brought to light the equivocal nature of James's philosophy. Equally however, reading Laski against the background of James's intellectual legacy helps us understand more clearly some of the ambiguities and tensions in Laski's work; for instance how he could move with apparent ease from advocating political pluralism to supporting centralized planning. Finally, this paper illustrates the complex relationship between political theory and metaphysics. (shrink)

This article explores J.G.A. Pocock’s insight that “traces” of civic republican discourse survived within the dominant liberal paradigm of modern political thought. It does so by tracking classical republican themes in the works of American pragmatist John Dewey and English pluralist Harold Laski. The main contribution of the article is to show that the 1920s pluralist theory of the state can be interpreted as a reformulation of the classical republican critique of modern liberal conceptions of state sovereignty. In particular, (...) I suggest that Laski can be viewed as a kind of republican pluralist inspired by Aristotle and Harrington as well as by American pragmatism, itself a late outgrowth of the republican tradition in US history. Artykuł stanowi odpowiedź na dziesięć tekstów, w których zgłoszono zarzuty lub uwagi do mojej książki Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej (Wojtysiak 2023). Odpowiedź podzieliłem na trzy grupy tematyczne: teistyczny argument z wielkiego faktu wiary, krytyka ateistycznego argumentu ze zła oraz obrona religii z jej testymonialnego charakteru. W pierwszej części artykułu bronię tezy, że mój teistyczny argument z wielkiego faktu wiary jest, pomimo wysuniętych trudności i dzięki jego ulepszeniom, silniejszy od (sformułowanego przez J.L. Schellenberga) ateistycznego (...) argumentu z faktu niewiary. Wciąż uważam, że teizm najlepiej wyjaśnia fakt powszechności i trwania wiary w Boga lub „czegoś” do Niego podobnego. W drugiej części artykułu uzasadniam tezę, że właściwie rozumiana zasada łaski kreacyjnej zarówno pozwala spodziewać się zła w świecie (w podobnym stopniu co ateizm), jak i nie narusza naszych intuicji na temat dobroci Boga. Dodatkowo bronię racjonalności wiary w stan „pierwotnej sprawiedliwości”. W trzeciej części podtrzymuję swoje przekonanie, że religia jest jedną z tych dziedzin życia, w których jesteśmy skazani na wiedzę testymonialną. Dlatego religia ma prima facie wartość poznawczą. W książce Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej Jacek Wojtysiak podejmuje między innymi zagadnienie Bożej dobroci. Poszukuje najbardziej przekonującej odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, jak pogodzić z istnieniem Boga wielki fakt zła. Proponuje także reinterpretację tradycyjnego ujęcia Bożej dobroci poprzez rozwinięcie koncepcji Briana Daviesa. Uważam, że podjęta przez J. Wojtysiaka próba może zostać uzupełniona o kilka istotnych kwestii. W niniejszym tekście wskazuję możliwe uzupełnienia i dopowiedzenia. Zwracam uwagę na możliwe niepożądane konsekwencje płynące z niektórych proponowanych (...) przez J. Wojtysiaka rozwiązań. Pokazuję także, w jaki sposób można by uzupełnić propozycję Autora, by możliwe było uniknięcie tych konsekwencji. Zwracam uwagę na wskazywane w dyskusjach wokół problemów zła i Bożej ukrytości niebezpieczeństwa związane z modyfikacją przypisywanego Bogu atrybutu dobroci. Dyskutuję zagadnienie „łaski kreacyjnej”, umieszczając je w nieco innym, niż to czyni Autor, kontekście. Na koniec, podejmując wyzwanie rzucone przez J. Wojtysiaka, polegające na próbie pogodzenia wielkiego faktu zła z Bożą dobrocią, przedstawiam propozycję nowego ujęcia tego zagadnienia. (shrink)

I want to begin this paper by recalling a once-lively school of English political and legal thinking which has fallen undeservedly into neglect. I refer to the pluralists, notably the lawyer F. W. Maitland, the religious scholar J. N. Figgis, and, early in their careers, the political theorists Harold Laski and G. D. H. Cole. All were influenced by the writings of the German legal scholar Otto von Gierke, which Maitland as editor and translator had first introduced into England. (...) The pluralists' concerns were at once political and legal; virtually alone among English writers in this century until the 1970s, their work avoided the barrenness that comes of treating political theory and jurisprudence as unrelated enterprises. I shall describe the problems that preoccupied them and some of their resultant theories, and also the way in which specifically legal doctrine was both a target of their criticism and an important element in their thinking. Intellectual autonomy has long been identified as an epistemic virtue, one that has been championed influentially by (among others) Kant, Hume and Emerson. Manifesting intellectual autonomy, at least, in a virtuous way, does not require that we form our beliefs in cognitive isolation. Rather, as Roberts and Wood (Intellectual virtues: an essay in regulative epistemology, OUP Oxford, Oxford, pp. 259–260, 2007) note, intellectually virtuous autonomy involves reliance and outsourcing (e.g., on other individuals, technology, medicine, etc.) to an appropriate extent, while (...) at the same time maintaining intellectual self-direction. In this essay, I want to investigate the ramifications for intellectual autonomy of a particular kind of epistemic dependence: cognitive enhancement. Cognitive enhancements (as opposed to therapeutic cognitive improvements) involve the use of technology and medicine to improve cognitive capacities in healthy individuals, through mechanisms ranging from smart drugs to brain-computer interfaces. With reference to case studies in bioethics, as well as the philosophy of mind and cognitive science, it is shown that epistemic dependence, in this extreme form, poses a prima facie threat to the retention of intellectual autonomy, specifically, by threatening to undermine our intellectual self-direction. My aim will be to show why certain kinds of cognitive enhancements are subject to this objection from self-direction, while others are not. Once this is established, we’ll see that even some extreme kinds of cognitive enhancement might be not merely compatible with, but constitutive of, virtuous intellectual autonomy. (shrink)
