The Primacy of Love: An Introduction to the Ethics of Thomas Aquinas by Paul J. Wadell, C.P., and: Friends of God: Virtues and Gifts in Aquinas by Paul J. Wadell, C.P. [REVIEW]Mark Johnson - 1995 - The Thomist 59 (3):508-512.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:508 BOOK REVIEWS Margerie tells us that Augustine surely held that Genesis contains such a plural sense, with the added affirmation that Moses, whom Augustine considers to be the author ofthe Pentateuch, thanks to a transient beatific vision, personally foresaw and intended all the interpretations that would later be given. In keeping with his careful and cautious approach, near the end of the book Father de Margerie admits the (...)

The Introduction to the Jurisprudence of Holland and the Doctrine of the Free Seas. Zwalve - 2009 - Grotiana 30 (1):49-64.
It is sometimes taken for granted that Grotius included a short restatement of his doctrine of the free sea in his famous Introduction to the Jurisprudence of Holland . This impression is incorrect, since Grotius merely restates a dictum of the Roman lawyer Marcianus and, in doing so, only deals with the condition of the sea according to private law. In Mare liberum, however, he employs Marcian's idea of the sea as a res communis in a different fashion. (...)

Catholic introduction to the Bible.John Sietze Bergsma - 2018 - San Francisco: Ignatius Press. Edited by Brant James Pitre.
Although many Catholics are familiar with the four Gospels and other writings of the New Testament, for most, reading the Old Testament is like walking into a foreign land. Who wrote these forty-six books? When were they written? Why were they written? What are we to make of their laws, stories, histories, and prophecies? Should the Old Testament be read by itself or in light of the New Testament? John Bergsma and Brant Pitre offer readable in-depth answers to these questions (...)

An introduction to tantric philosophy: the Paramarthasara of Abhinavagupta with the commentary of Yogaraja.Lyne Bansat-Boudon - 2011 - New York: Routledge. Edited by Kamalesha Datta Tripathi, Abhinavagupta & Yogarāja.
The Parama¯rthasa¯ra, or 'Essence of Ultimate Reality', is a work of the Kashmirian polymath Abhinavagupta (tenth–eleventh centuries). It is a brief treatise in which the author outlines the doctrine of which he is a notable exponent, namely nondualistic S´aivism, which he designates in his works as the Trika, or 'Triad' of three principles: S´iva, S´akti and the embodied soul (nara). The main interest of the Parama¯rthasa¯ra is not only that it serves as an introduction to the established (...) of a tradition, but also advances the notion of jiv¯anmukti, 'liberation in this life', as its core theme. Further, it does not confine itself to an exposition of the doctrine as such but at times hints at a second sense lying beneath the evident sense, namely esoteric techniques and practices that are at the heart of the philosophical discourse. Its commentator, Yogara¯ja (eleventh century), excels in detecting and clarifying those various levels of meaning. An Introduction to Tantric Philosophy presents, along with a critically revised Sanskrit text, the first annotated English translation of both Abhinavagupta's Parama¯rthasa¯ra and Yogara¯ja's commentary. This book will be of interest to Indologists, as well as to specialists and students of Religion, Tantric studies and Philosophy. (shrink)

This work provides an introduction to the philosophy of religion, and is written for those with no previous knowledge of philosophy. It explains the nature of philosophical inquiry and shows how the demand for a philosophical examination of religion arose out of particular historical situations. It discusses traditional philosophical questions about the existence of God, miracles, the truth of the Bible, science and religion, and religion and ethics. The argument of the book suggests that the attempt to find (...)

Introduction to the Philosophy of Law: Readings and Cases employs a combination of case-based and theory-based materials to show novices in the field how the philosophy of law is related to concrete and actual legal practice. Ideal for undergraduates, it engages their curiosity about the law without sacrificing philosophical content. The authors emphasize a command of legal concepts and doctrine as a prelude to philosophical analysis. Designed to acquaint students with the fundamentals of jurisprudence and legal theory, Part (...)

The volume presents the illuminating research carried out by international scholars of Locke’s thought and the early modern period in general. The essays address the theoretical and historical contexts of Locke’s analytical methodology and come together in a multidisciplinary approach that sets biblical hermeneutics in relation to his philosophical, historical, and political thought, and to the philological and doctrinal culture of his time. Centring on the last decade of Locke’s life and the publication of his posthumous works, these studies illustrate (...)

This article introduces the Earth Bible Project, the work of an international team of biblical scholars in conversation with scholars from other disciplines, especially ecologists, that engages in such a reevaluation of the Christian Bible. Inner-Midrashic Introductions and Their Influence on Introductions to Medieval Rabbinic Bible Commentaries.Michel G. Distefano - 2009 - Walter de Gruyter.
The opening sections of some exegetical Midrashim deal with the same type of material that is found in introductions to medieval rabbinic Bible commentaries. The application of Goldberg's form analysis to these sections reveals the new form "Inner-Midrashic Introduction" as a thematic discourse on introductory issues to biblical books. By its very nature the IMI is embedded within the comments on the first biblical verse. Further analysis of medieval rabbinic Bible commentary introductions in terms of their formal, (...)
