  5. Hierarchy and ontological dualism: rethinking Gilles Deleuze's Nietzsche forpolitical philosophy.I. Donaldson - 2002 - History of Political Thought 23 (4):654-669.
Nietzsche's place in the canon of political philosophy has been articulated, increasingly, according to the scope of Left-Nietzschean political thought. Yet this particular strain of Nietzsche interpretation ignores a vital element of Nietzsche's philosophy. That element is 'hierarchy' and its role at the heart of Nietzsche's ontological claims. One of the most important contributions to Left-Nietzschean thought may be found in Gilles Deleuze's Nietzsche and Philosophy. Significantly, it is Deleuze who has the most to say about hierarchy in Nietzsche's (...). Therefore, in an attempt to help liberate Nietzsche from the narrow parameters of Left-Nietzschean thought, it is necessary to rethink Deleuze's influential interpretation. (shrink)

Xunzi: A Translation and Study of the Complete Works: —Vol. I, Books 1-6.John Knoblock - 1988 - Stanford University Press.
Coming at the end of the great flowering of philosophical inquiry in Warring States China, when the foundations for traditional Chinese thought were laid, Xunzi occupies a place analogous to that of Aristotle in the West. The collection of works bearing his name contains not only the most systematic philosophical exposition by any early Confucian thinker, but also account of virtually every aspect of the intellectual, cultural, and social life of his time. Xunzi was a social critic and intellectual historian (...)

A Rasa Reader: Classical Indian Aesthetics.Sheldon I. Pollock (ed.) - 2016 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
From the early years of the Common Era to 1700, Indian intellectuals explored with unparalleled subtlety the place of emotion in art. Their investigations led to the deconstruction of art's formal structures and broader inquiries into the pleasure of tragic tales. _Rasa_, or taste, was the word they chose to describe art's aesthetics, and their passionate effort to pin down these phenomena became its own remarkable act of creation. This book is the first in any language to follow the evolution (...)

The Prophet Muḥammad’s Behavior Expressing Legal Freedom (Ibāḥā) in Islamic Law.İbrahim Yilmaz - 2021 - Cumhuriyet İlahiyat Dergisi 25 (1):275-292.
Sunnah is the second main source for Islamic law following the Qur’ān. Sunnah in the books on the Methodology of Islamic Law (Usūl al-fiqh) is examined in two main parts, one of which is as the source for religious commands and the other is being as religious/taklīfī commands. Sunnah is divided into three categories in terms of being the source for Islamic commands: qawlī (verbal), fi‘ilī (behavioral) and taqrīrī (approval). In the Islamic literature, when the word “sunnah” is mentioned, (...)

    Voltaire's Philosophical dictionary.H. I. Voltaire & Woolf - 1924 - New York,: A. A. Knopf. Edited by H. I. Woolf.
This book does not demand continuous reading; but at whatever place one opens it, one will find matter for reflection. The most useful books are those of which readers themselves compose half; they extend the thoughts of which the germ is presented to them; they correct what seems defective to them, and they fortify by their reflections what seems to them weak. It is only really by enlightened people that this book can be read; the ordinary man is not (...)

Harnessing the potential of transmedia narratives for critical multimodal literacy.Emilia Djonov & Chiao-I. Tseng - 2021 - Critical Discourse Studies 18 (3):349-367.
Literary narratives are well recognised for their power to foster engagement with complex social themes. Transmedia narratives, which present the same story in different media, can help advance both critical multimodal discourse studies and multiliteracies pedagogies. To harness this potential, we need to develop methods for systematically relating media affordances to discourse-semantic patterns and the broad social themes these patterns construct in narratives, and ensure these methods build on the knowledge learners bring to the classroom. This article introduces a social (...)

Christian Motifs and Themes in the Life and Works of Aleksei Fedorovich Losev.V. I. Postovalova - 2001 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 40 (3):83-92.
Aleksei Fedorovich Losev did not share the hereditary Russian prejudice that science and philosophy exclude religion . Although he did not leave any specialized works in theology, the history of religion, or the foundations of the Christian worldview, many of his books, lines from letters, and fragments of conversations and, most importantly, his whole way of life and life journey show that all his life he reflected continuously and intensely on themes of the Christian faith and, primarily, of the (...)

    Thomas of Monmouth: Detector of Ritual Murder.Gavin I. Langmuir - 1984 - Speculum 59 (4):820-846.
The detective story in which the investigator is an amateur without official standing is a peculiarly English genre. Perhaps the earliest example, telling of an investigation that was pursued unofficially by an individual who arrived on the scene after the crime, disagreed with the official stand, pursued his own investigation, and reported the results, is “The Life and Passion of Saint William the Martyr of Norwich,” which Thomas of Monmouth started in 1149/50 and completed in 1172/73. Book 1 of theLife, (...)
