Item-Level Story Recall Predictors of Amyloid-Beta in Late Middle-Aged Adults at Increased Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease.Kimberly D. Mueller, Lianlian Du, Davide Bruno, Tobey Betthauser, Bradley Christian, Sterling Johnson, Bruce Hermann & Rebecca Langhough Koscik - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
BackgroundStory recall tests have shown variable sensitivity to rate of cognitive decline in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers. Although SR tasks are typically scored by obtaining a sum of items recalled, item-level analyses may provide additional sensitivity to change and AD processes. Here, we examined the difficulty and discrimination indices of each item from the Logical Memory SR task, and determined if these metrics differed by recall conditions, story version, lexical categories, serial position, and amyloid status.Methodsn = 1,141 participants from (...)

  3. Public Choice Iii.Dennis Mueller - 2003 - Cambridge University Press.
This book represents a considerable revision and expansion of Public Choice II. Six new chapters have been added, and several chapters from the previous edition have been extensively revised. The discussion of empirical work in public choice has been greatly expanded. As in the previous editions, all of the major topics of public choice are covered. These include: why the state exists, voting rules, federalism, the theory of clubs, two-party and multiparty electoral systems, rent seeking, bureaucracy, interest groups, dictatorship, the (...)

Optics of Thought: Logic and Vision in Müller, Helmholtz, and Frege.D. C. McCarty - 2000 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 41 (4):365-378.
The historical antecedents of Frege's treatment of binocular vision in "The thought" were the physiological writings of Johannes Mueller, Hermann von Helmholtz, and Emil du Bois-Reymond. In their research on human vision, logic was assigned an unexpected role: it was to be the means by which knowledge of a world extended in three dimensions arises from stimuli that are at best two-dimensional. An examination of this literature yields a richer understanding of Frege's insistence that a proper epistemology requires us (...)

    The Ecological Ethics of Nordic Children’s Tales.Nina Witoszek & Martin Lee Mueller - 2021 - Environmental Ethics 43 (1):61-78.
For decades now, environmental philosophers from Arne Næss to Freya Mathews have dreamt of environmental ethics that “make things happen.” We contend such ethics can be found in Nordic children’s tales—those scriptures of moral guidance, and influential propellers of environmental action. In this essay we discuss the moral-imaginative worlds of fictitious in Nordic children’s tales, choosing some of the most canonical stories of the Nordics as our focal point. We argue the complex and often inconsistent philosophical mediations between human and (...)

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:The Language of Reciprocity in Euripides' MedeaMelissa MuellerEuripides' Medea is a character who is adept at speaking many languages. To the chorus of Corinthian women, she presents herself as a woman like any other, but with fewer resources; to Jason in the agōn she speaks as if man to man, articulating her claim to the appropriate returns of charis and philia. Even when she addresses herself, in the great (...)

The importance of self-interest and public interest in politics.Dennis C. Mueller - 2011 - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society 23 (3):321-338.
ABSTRACT In its attempt to prove that voters, politicians, and bureaucrats are motivated by the public interest, Self-Interest and Public Interest in Western Politics overlooks a great deal of public-choice research, to which much has been added during the two decades since it was published. The importance of self-interest at both the micro and macro levels of politics becomes clear once one looks not simply at the ?inputs? of a democracy but at its ?outputs? as well. The prevalence of interest (...)

Gewissen und Wahrheit bei John Henry Kardinal Newman.Hermann Geissler - 1995 - New York: P. Lang.

Business and Local Government: Prevention of Unethical Conduct.Anna Mueller & Jadranka Skorin-Kapov - 2023 - Journal of Business Ethics Education 20:209-218.
The case describes the developments of an ethics code observed in the local government of Suffolk County, New York, USA. In Suffolk County, there is now a dedicated Board of Ethics Agency (“Board”) within the local government to ensure that business operations and government operations run as ethically compliant as possible. This Board was created in 2012 in order to follow compliance with a law that established a replacement for the Ethics Commission (previously existing within Suffolk County) because this Ethics (...)

The Felt Body and Embodied Communication.Hermann Schmitz - 2017 - Yearbook for Eastern and Western Philosophy 2017 (2):9-19.
In the 4th and 5th centuries B.C. the most significant paradigm change in Western intellectual culture occurred, later affecting Christianity and subsequently science. In the interest of personal empowerment over spontaneous stirrings, a private inner sphere, a so-called soul was ascribed to every conscious subject which was taken to contain their whole experience, like a house, conceived of as an inner world in which reason was to be the master of spontaneous impulses; the empirical external world between these inner spheres (...)

Evolutionary conservation and ontogenetic emergence of neural algorithms.Hermann Wagner & Dirk Kautz - 1998 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 21 (2):285-286.
Neural algorithms are conserved during evolution. Neurons with different shapes and using different molecular mechanisms can perform the same computation. However, evolutionary conservation of neural algorithms is not sufficient for claiming the realization of an algorithm for a specific computational problem. A plausible scheme for ontogenetic emergence of the structure of the algorithm must also be provided.

It is the aim of the present article to show that, on the one hand, John L. Mackie's concept of an INUS condition lends itself to a modern reconstruction of Aristotle's theory of accidental causation which brings the indeterministic character of this theory to the fore, and that, on the other hand, in the light of this theory the concept of an INUS condition can be enriched by distinguishing between synchronic INUS conditions and diachronic ones. This distinction, which Mackie fails (...)
