The Scribbling Women and the Cosmic Success Story.Henry Nash Smith - 1974 - Critical Inquiry 1 (1):47-70.
This essay deals with American fiction between the early 1850s, when Hawthorne and Melville produced their best work, and the first novels of Howells and James in the early 1870s. The familiar notion that this was the period of transition from pre-Civil War Romanticism to postwar Realism tells us nothing in particular about it. Yet we need some historical frame in which to place both of the later efforts of Hawthorne and Melville and the apprentice work of the next generation (...)

Signature Stories: Helen Timberlake‘s Petition to George III.Susan Nash - 2014 - Bulletin of the John Rylands Library 90 (2):185-209.
This article explores the process of female self-fashioning in two previously neglected petitions dated 1786-87 by using signatures to analyse their texts and construct their contexts. In them, Helen Timberlake revises the account of frontier and Cherokee life her husband, Henry Timberlake, had published in his Memoirs. Her intense maternal voice, focused on loss, entangles her history with that of the Cherokee chief Ostenaco, providing a grounded but often untrue narrative of shared family life and a persona tailored to (...)

Partial impredicativity in reverse mathematics.Henry Towsner - 2013 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 78 (2):459-488.
In reverse mathematics, it is possible to have a curious situation where we know that an implication does not reverse, but appear to have no information on how to weaken the assumption while preserving the conclusion (other than reducing all the way to the tautology of assuming the conclusion). A main cause of this phenomenon is the proof of a $\Pi^1_2$ sentence from the theory $\mathbf{\Pi^{\textbf{1}}_{\textbf{1}}-CA_{\textbf{0}}}$. Using methods based on the functional interpretation, we introduce a family of weakenings of $\mathbf{\Pi^{\textbf{1}}_{\textbf{1}}-CA_{\textbf{0}}}$ (...)

  12. Three stages of medical dialogue.Henry Abramovitch & Eliezer Schwartz - 1996 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 17 (2).
The negative consequences of physicians' failure to establish and maintain personal relationships with patients are at the heart of the humanistic crisis in medicine. To resolve this crisis, a new model of doctor-patient interaction is proposed, based on the ideas of Martin Buber's philosophy of dialogue. This model shows how the physican may successfully combine the personal (I-Thou) and impersonal (I-It) aspects of medicine in three stages. These Three Stages of Medical Dialogue include:1. An Initial Personal Meeting stage, which initiates (...)

This Festschrift seeks to honor three highly distinguished scholars in the Department of Philosophy, University of Michigan: William K. Frankena, Charles L. Stevenson, and Richard B. Brandt. Each has made significant contributions to the philosophic literature, particularly in the field of ethics. Michigan has been fortunate in having three such original and productive moral philosophers serving on its faculty simultaneously. Yet they stand in a long tradition of excellence, both within the Department and in the University. Let us trace that (...)

Political Ideas in the Romantic Age: Their Rise and Influence on Modern Thought.Henry Hardy (ed.) - 2008 - Princeton University Press.
It is sometimes thought that the renowned essayist Isaiah Berlin was incapable of writing a big book. But in fact he developed some of his most important essays--including "Two Concepts of Liberty" and "Historical Inevitability"--from a book-length manuscript that he intended to publish but later set aside. Published here for the first time, Political Ideas in the Romantic Age is the only book in which Berlin lays out in one continuous account most of his key insights about the history of (...)

The Priority of Democratic Autonomy Over Discriminatory Religion.Henry E. Cline - 2000 - Journal of Philosophical Research 25:381-403.
This paper attempts to nudge the reader in the direction of an enlightened account of democratic choice, a sense of reflective choice which undermines our present support of discriminatory sectarian doctrine. I use Gutmann’s and Altman’s views as prologues to my own, though they might well reject my conclusions about discriminatory religion. I contrast my view with Macedo’s, Gray’s, Larmore’s, Rosenblum’s, and Galston’s.My argument utilizes common sense and relatively uncontroversial metaphysical principles to make it more difficult to dismiss as being (...)
