Orestes, like Hercules Furens, deals with madness and crime; but, whereas in the latter Euripides treats his subject with Aeschylean mysticism, in this play he attempts a pathological study of criminality. For subtlety of psychological insight this play is comparable to Hamlet, but it is far more dramatic than Shakespeare's play. In fact, the first impression made upon the reader is that it is ‘good stage’, an opinion shared by the actors of the fourth century. Yet it has not infrequently (...) been condemned by modern critics; and some, instead of understanding it, have written almost as though it had no point at all. The main difficulty is the contradictory statements made about Orestes' guilt. In one place Orestes will openly blame Apollo ; in another he admits to being tortured by a guilty conscience . This is a division in Orestes' mind, which is the victim of more than one contradiction; it is not inconsistency on the author's part. Further, Euripides is describing a process of demoralization, not a state; and therefore what is true of the characters in one part of the play is not necessarily true at another. As the play is dynamic, interpretation too must be progressive and take the form of a running commentary. (shrink)

This article examines the ways in which French tourist officers manage impartiality in telephone calls when faced with recommendation-seeking questions. Using Conversation Analysis and drawing on a corpus of 700+ telephone calls, it shows that, by typically avoiding conforming responses, officers resist confirming the evaluative element embodied in RSQs and, thus, avoid making recommendations. Instead, they opt to treat the questions as unanswerable in their own terms, a practice that may be deployed on its own or in conjunction with other (...) practices such as supplying information that will assist callers in making their choices and/or constructing responses as contingent. Further, officers typically do not decline to make recommendations on institutional grounds and, through their choices of interactional practices, obscure the institutional restrictions under which they operate. Thus, the selection of nonconforming responses by tourist officers is shown to contribute to the maintenance of an impartial stance. Finally, the article addresses the notions of affiliation and alignment and shows that nonconforming responses are less disaffiliative than outright rejections. (shrink)

Sophokles, der zweite der drei grossen Tragiker, fuhrte die griechische Tragodie zu ihrem Hohepunkt. Seine Dramen haben die am strengsten komponierte Form, seine Neuerungen lassen die Handlung auf der Buhne starker hervortreten: Er fuhrt den dritten Schauspieler ein, schrankt die Chorlieder ein, erweitert dagegen den Chor von 12 auf 15 Manner und verwendet als erster Buhnenmalerei. Er lost sich von der gewohnten Trilogie und stellt jede der drei zusammen aufgefuhrten Tragodien nach Stoff und Handlung abgerundet auf sich selbst. Mit diesen (...) Neuerungen schuf er sich die Mittel, die neue Tragodie vielseitiger, beweglicher und darstellerisch wie dramatisch anspruchsvoller zu gestalten. Und er hatte Erfolg: Achtzehnmal errang er mit seinen Dramen den ersten Platz. Das Zentrum seiner Dramen bildet der leidende Mensch: Der grosse Einzelne steht in der Mitte des Geschehens, das auf ihn zukommt und das er mit Schrecken und Leid selbst vorantreibt. Er ist kein Mustermensch, er steht vielmehr den Verstandigen und Gemassigten extrem gegenuber. Aus seinem Wesen entwickelt sich die Handlung, die bei Sophokles zu unerbittlichen Darstellungen der Condition humana mit allen Greueln wird, die der Menschheitsgeschichte eigen sind.
