Zugleich ist er aber zunehmend von Gewalt, von medialen Auswüchsen und von der Schnelllebigkeit unserer Zeit bedroht. Angesichts dieser Entwicklung ist Martin Bubers „dialogisches Prinzip“ hochaktuell. Sein Verständnis des Dialogs unterscheidet sich fundamental vom heutigen medialen Diskurs. In seinem Hauptwerk Ich und Du beschreibt Buber die Grundbedingungen für einen guten Dialog. Ein solcher kann nur gelingen, wenn zwei Menschen bereit sind, sich voll und ganz (...) aufeinander einzulassen und dem anderen ohne Vorbehalte oder Vorurteile zu begegnen. L’Empire romain atteint à la fin de la République une étendue géographique qui englobe des aires culturelles très diverses, ce qui a une influence sur la typologie et les fonctions des maisons dans les différentes régions de la Méditerranée. Dans l’impossibilité de pouvoir donner une vue d’ensemble et laissant de côté pour cette même raison les provinces occidentales de l’Afrique du Nord et du Levant, nous allons évoquer, après un regard sur la description de la maison urbaine chez Vitruve, quelques (...) exemples de Pompéi pour nous concentrer par la suite sur quelques maisons dans les provinces orientales, en particulier en Grèce et en Asie Mineure, pour mesurer l’influence ou non des Romains dans l’architecture privée. Il s’avère que cette dernière est bien restreinte, et que l’intégration de l’atrium est plutôt une référence qu’un élément structurel des maisons dont le péristyle reste l’élément central. L’étude est complétée par un excursus sur plusieurs maisons de l’Antiquité tardive à Athènes. (shrink)

This paper addresses the problem of the origin and principle of Aristotle’s distinctions among the categories. It explores the possibilities of reformulating and reviving the “grammatical” theory, generally ascribed first to Trendelenburg. The paper brings two new perspectives to the grammatical theory: that of Aristotle’s own theory of syntax and that of contemporary linguistic syntax and semantics. I put forth a provisional theory of Aristotle’s categories in which (1) I propose that the Categories sets forth a theory of lexical structure, (...) with the ten categories emerging as lexical or semantic categories, and (2) I suggest conceptual links, both in Aristotle’s writings and in actuality, between these semantic categories and certain grammatical inflections. À partir d’une approche constructiviste, cet article analyse la signification sociale, la présentation et la reproduction du corps, des cultures du mouvement, du genre et de la santé. Il éclaire les considérables transformations que connaît la construction des corps aux différentes périodes ainsi que le rôle de la médecine dans la détection des corps genrés depuis le xviiie siècle. L’attention est tout particulièrement attirée sur le développement des diverses cultures du mouvement et leur impact sur les idéaux et normes de (...) genre, ainsi que sur les discours médicaux relatifs à la participation des femmes à ces cultures. Avec ses principes de compétitions et de records, le sport moderne présente des opportunités de confirmer ou de défier l’ordre du genre. Le sport est un produit et un moteur de la société de la réussite moderne, ainsi qu’un espace où les différences corporelles, les différences de genre et le genre dans son ensemble sont re/produits et affichés. La médecine sportive apprend aux femmes à être le sexe faible et aux hommes à être le sexe fort. Comme ses discours le montrent, le sport semble moins procurer des bénéfices qu’attiser les dangers pour le corps et la santé des femmes. Néanmoins, aujourd’hui, le sport se présente aussi comme une opportunité pour déconstruire le genre. (shrink)

Alan Wertheimer claims the class of criminals who deserve punishment is identical with the class of criminals who are deferrable (Inquiry, Vol. 20 [1977]). According to Wertheimer this premise implies the conclusion that on ?the retributive account . . . the guilty are punished because we expect to alter (at least some) criminal behavior?. It is argued that this premise does not imply the conclusion.

Insbesondere in einer Auseinandersetzung mit Eisensteins Poetik des 〉Plasmatischen〈 wird die experimentelle Übertragung einer lebenswissenschaftlichen Metapher in eine Ästhetik des Films diskutiert, die von der Animation ausgeht. The paper discusses the notion of »experiment« and relates it – via Kant's concept of liveliness, which is a central topos of (...) aesthetic experience – to »animation« in film, insofar as both essentially refer to »life sciences.« Drawing upon the example of Eisenstein's poetics of the »plasmic,« the paper discusses the transferal of a metaphor from life sciences to an aesthetics of cinema based on animation. Songs and hymns shape faith and play a part in shaping political landscapes. They can be used to build or maintain power as well as to critique and challenge it. This has been true for South Africa, and some brief examples will be given. But this article focuses on hymns and patriotic songs from the time of the British Empire and explores how they portray power, entrench superiority or build a common, global Christian identity.
