El presente escrito analiza con detalle los argumentos presentados por el filósofo francés Frédéric Schiffter contra el difunto pensador Guy Debord, y que han sido magníficamente editados en castellano bajo el título Contra Debord (Editorial Melusina, Barcelona, 2005). Schiffter arremete contra el ídolo mediático en que Debord se había convertido, sobre todo tras su suicidio, en 1994, y también contra quienes se dejaron llevar por su discurso sin reparar en el significado de sus ideas y sus críticas. Schiffter contrapone al platonismo resentido de Debord un escepticismo que apela a la vida, al espectáculo y a la mercancía, como instancias donde el ser humano puede refugiarse para evitar, aunque sea sólo ilusoriamente, el aspecto trágico y absurdo de su existencia. Pero no tiene en cuenta el apreciable aporte descriptivo que la idea de sociedad del espectáculo ha supuesto para comprender mejor la actual sociedad tardocapitalista. Además, Schiffter incurre en el mismo fallo que reprocha a Debord: hacer de su propia propuesta una ontología indiscutible. (shrink)

In this paper I wish to reformulate in my own way some parts of Whitehead's theory of prehensions. This reformulation will deviate in various respects from Whitehead's own detailed views and terminology, but the main inspiration is from Whitehead.

Geron recently announced that it had begun enrolling patients in the world's first-in-human clinical trial involving cells derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). This trial raises important questions regarding the future of hESC-based therapies, especially in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. We address some safety and efficacy concerns with this research, as well as the ethics of fair subject selection. We consider other populations that might be better for this research: chronic complete SCI patients for a safety trial, subacute (...) incomplete SCI patients for an efficacy trial, and perhaps primary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) patients for a combined safety and efficacy trial. "Of all the theorists of the first Critical Theory, Horkheimer was the one who most explicitly expressed his interest in moral theory. He concludes his research with the impossibility of any moral system possessing its own foundations. Habermas challenged Horkheimer's judgment that it was impossible to establish the completeness of a moral system without a transcendent foundation, and proposed communicational reason as an immanent foundation.

At the phenomenal level, consciousness can be described as a singular, unified field of recursive self-awareness, consistently coherent in a particualr way; that of a subject located both spatially and temporally in an egocentrically-extended domain, such that conscious self-awareness is explicitly characterized by I-ness, now-ness and here-ness. The psychological mechanism underwriting this spatiotemporal self-locatedness and its recursive processing style involves an evolutionary elaboration of the basic orientative reference frame which consistently structures ongoing spatiotemporal self-location computations as i-here-now. Cognition computes action-output (...) in the midst of ongoing movement, and consequently requires a constant self-locating spatiotemporal reference frame as basis for these computations. Over time, constant evolutionary pressures for energy efficiency have encouraged both the proliferation of anticipative feedforward processing mechansims, and the elaboration, at the apex of the sensorimotor processing hierarchy, of self-activating, highly attenuated recursively-feedforward circuitry processing the basic orientational schema independent of external action output. As the primary reference frame of active waking cognition, this recursive i-here-now processing generates a zone of subjective self-awareness in terms of which it feels like something to be oneself here and now. Car les hommes politiques, sociologiquement séparés de la population, n'ont qu'une connaissance lacunaire des complexions passionnelles de ceux à qui ils s'adressent et, en réalité, ignorent presque tout de ce qui "leur fait quelque chose". Ce livre stimulant déploie une théorie concrète des affects politiques et montre que c'est par un usage des passions, autant que par un exercice de la raison, que l'on a une chance de transformer ce monde. The mystery surrounding consciousness as subjectivity dissipates dramatically when understood in its biological context. The core characteristics of consciousness can be seen to derive from its functionality, and the fundamental function of cognition, given the equivalence of mental activity and brain process, is to advance the survival and thus the self-regulative capacity of the organism of which the brain is a part. These core elements of consciousness are comprised of a self-locational data structure which serves to configure ongoing experience in (...) terms of controllable spatial and temporal parameters, and a processing regime for this orientational schema which has evolved from the feedback architecture necessary for regulating behavior in relation to homeostatic needs. These two self-regulative constituents yield a primitive form of consciousness as subjectivity — simple reflexive awareness — which provides the basis for the subsequent development of metacognitive mechanisms which monitor and control the cognitive processes which regulate behavior in relation to metabolic requirements.
