The Voice Is As Mighty As the Pen: Integrating Conversations into Advance Care Planning.Kunal Bailoor, Leslie H. Kamil, Ed Goldman, Laura M. Napiewocki, Denise Winiarski, Christian J. Vercler & Andrew G. Shuman - 2018 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 15 (2):185-191.
Advance care planning allows patients to articulate preferences for their medical treatment, lifestyle, and surrogate decision-makers in order to anticipate and mitigate their potential loss of decision-making capacity. Written advance directives are often emphasized in this regard. While these directives contain important information, there are several barriers to consider: veracity and accuracy of surrogate decision-makers in making choices consistent with the substituted judgement standard, state-to-state variability in regulations, literacy issues, lack of access to legal resources, lack of understanding of medical (...)

This thought-provoking book discusses the concept of progress in economics and investigates whether any advance has been made in its different spheres of research. The authors look back at the history, successes and failures of their respective fields and thoroughly examine the notion of progress from an epistemological and methodological perspective. The idea of progress is particularly significant as the authors regard it as an essentially contested concept which can be defined in many ways – theoretically or empirically; locally or (...)

Crantore lettore del prologo del Timeo: Il fr. 8 Mette tra decostruzione ed ermeneutica.Christian Vassallo - 2023 - Hermes 151 (4):405-423.
This paper analyses in-depth Proclus’ testimonium to Crantor on Plato’s Atlantis (fr. 8 Mette). The expression ἱστορία ψιλή we read in the evidence should be interpreted in light of Proclus’ effort to classify the various readings of the Atlantis story (and of Platonic myths in general). From the elements at our disposal, we may tentatively infer that Crantor upheld a metaphorical (i. e. didactic) reading not only of the creation account of the Timaeus, but of the Atlantis myth as well. Springer Nature Switzerland. pp. 321-324.
In 1917/18 the German publisher Eugen Diederichs organized three “closed meetings” at Lauenstein castle in Upper Franconia (Germany) where about 60 representatives of science, art, and “the youth” discussed “the meaning and purpose of our time.” (273) The present volume delivers the definitive documentation of these historically important meetings. At the same time, it brings together three different sources, carefully selected, edited, and introduced by Meike Werner.

    At the centre of Kierkegaard: An objective absurdity.Ed L. Miller - 1997 - Religious Studies 33 (4):433-441.
No one doubts that for Kierkegaard's definition of Christian faith one should look to the "Concluding Unscientific Postscript." The contention of this paper is that within the Postscript, most have looked in the wrong place. The well-known definition that is usually cited is actually a definition of Socratic or religious faith, and the definition of specifically Christian faith, given a few pages later, represents an existential intensification, which moves from an 'objective uncertainty' to an 'objective absurdity'. This latter (...)

ABSTRACT In order to explore what it means to pursue philosophical investigations for theological reasons, this paper argues that Ludwig Wittgenstein continues and corrects Pseudo-Denys’ project in The Divine Names. I first argue that The Divine Names should be interpreted as attempting to render human thought transparent to the divine by relativizing our concepts. The success of this project is compromised because the concept of ‘unity’ is not relativized. I then develop the claim that Wittgenstein does relativize unity in a (...)
