Community-based food cultivation by and for rural Alaskans has never been stronger. Rural gardeners, many Indigenous, provide their families and communities with affordable access to high-quality fruits and vegetables and other locally grown foods. Despite these emerging trends, there is sparse examination of gardening as a complementary, diversification, or adaptation strategy in wild food-centered systems and the interchange of values and worldviews among practices. Findings from interviews and surveys in Dillingham, Alaska, and interviews with community-focused gardens throughout the state, inform (...) our research questions about the role of gardening in rural Alaska and the links between food cultivation practices and wild food traditions. In this study we find that home gardeners are essential pillars of food sovereignty and security in their communities, providing both gardened foods and high volumes and more diversity of wild foods. Gardening households increase the diversity of shared food resources in the community and serve as sinks of gardening knowledge and supplies for other community members. Traditional food practices and ethics are interwoven into gardening and have become part of annual food rounds and celebrations. Locally, cultivated foods are often described as a complement to age-old foodways that draw on histories and values connected to Indigenous agriculture and horticulture in the United States and Canada. Policies, practices, and programming of food and nutrition security and food sovereignty must consider the holistic food system and strategies that communities desire and invest in. (shrink)

This paper argues that moral judgment is suffering at the hands of instrumental rationality and identity thinking, concepts from the tradition of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory that help explain degradations in human relations. These concepts are not new, but they are realized in novel ways, and the implications continue to be significant, contributing to human suffering and prominent anti-intellectual sentiment. Working through the shared intellectual ground of Adorno, Edmundson, Stivers, and Ellul, the paper takes a critical look at (...) our culture through the objectification of genuine human relations that comes with techno-rational prioritization. The endpoint of such a culture is the compromise of human subjectivity in the service of efficiency, objectivity, and measurability. Extending the analysis to educational practice, Joas’s notion of situational creativity and Dewey’s aesthetics are proposed as possible points of resistance, highlighting positive actions to be taken to remediate these narrow and dehumanizing phenomena. There are three distinct questions associated with Simpson’s paradox. Why or in what sense is Simpson’s paradox a paradox? What is the proper analysis of the paradox? How one should proceed when confronted with a typical case of the paradox? We propose a “formal” answer to the first two questions which, among other things, includes deductive proofs for important theorems regarding Simpson’s paradox. Our account contrasts sharply with Pearl’s causal account of the first two questions. We argue that the “how (...) to proceed question?” does not have a unique response, and that it depends on the context of the problem. We evaluate an objection to our account by comparing ours with Blyth’s account of the paradox. Our research on the paradox suggests that the “how to proceed question” needs to be divorced from what makes Simpson’s paradox “paradoxical.”. (shrink)

The Scandinavian welfare states are known for their universal access to healthcare; however, health inequalities affecting ethnic minority patients are prevalent. Ethnic minority patients' encounters with healthcare systems are often portrayed as part of a system that represents objectivity and neutrality. However, the Danish healthcare sector is a political apparatus that is affected by policies and conceptualisations. Health policies towards ethnic minorities are analysed using Bacchi's policy analysis, to show how implicit problem representations are translated from political and societal discourses (...) into the Danish healthcare system. Our analysis shows that health policies are based on different ideas of who ethnic minority patients are and what kinds of challenges they entail. Two main issues are raised: First, ethnic minorities are positioned as bearers of ‘culture’ and ‘ethnicity’. These concepts of ‘othering’ become both explanations for and the cause of inappropriate healthcare behaviour. Second, the Scandinavian welfare states are known for their solidarity, collectivism, equality and tolerance, also grounded in a postracial, colour‐blind and noncolonial past ideology that forms the societal self‐image. Combined with the ethical and legal responsibility of healthcare professionals to treat all patients equally, our findings indicate little leeway for addressing the discrimination experienced by ethnic minority patients. Excerpt from Philosophische Stromungen der Gegenwart Der Kampf um einen neuen Lebensinhalt ist wieder einmal entbrannt. Es gahrt in den Kopfen. Man verlangt, wie zu allen Zeiten, da das Leben aufwarts ging, von der Philosophie Antworten auf jene Ratselfragen, deren Losung einst der Theologie uberantwortet wurde, wahrend man sie zuletzt der Naturwissenschaft anheimgestellt hat. Da weder die Deutungen der Theologen, noch die Erklarungen der Naturforscher endgultig zu befriedigen vermogen, so klopft man aufs neue bei den Philosophen an. Mit dem 20. (...) Jahrhundert hat eine philosophische Bewegung eingesetzt, die zu einer Neublute der einst verfemten "Naturphilosophie" gefuhrt hat. Die "philosophischen Stromungen der Gegenwart" gilt es hier festzuhalten. In der atemlosen Hast und verwirrenden Unrast der philosophischen Gedankenbildungen unserer Tage laufen wir Gefahr, aneinander vorbei zu philosophieren. Es durfte daher geboten sein, von Zeit zu Zeit Atem zu holen und Umschau zu halten. Selbstbesinnung und Selbstbescheidung fordern gleichsehr geschichtlichen Umblick und systematischen Ausblick. Die hier gebotene Schilderung der "philosophischen Stromungen der Gegenwart" mochte nun den Versuch machen, aus der erdruckenden Fulle der uns zugemuteten neuen philosophischen Welterklarungen diejenigen herauszugreifen, denen entweder typischer Charakter oder machtvolle Wirkung auf das philosophische Denken der Gegenwart zuerkannt werden muss. Weder sind hier alle Richtungen und Schulen, noch alle Nationen und Literaturen gleichmassig berucksichtigt. The authors contained in this issue take up questions of political literacy, moral judgment, the mathematics curriculum and classroom, and the social studies curriculum and classroom. If I had to offer a throughline within these articles, it is the pragmatist conception of judgment that (...) should be cultivated through social relations and classroom practices. These authors are concerned with citizens’ capacity for intelligent judgment within communities and society at large. Pushing back against prevailing logics, these authors offer corrective arguments by positioning Dewey’s thought and pragmatism in contrast to the current logics operating in classrooms and society.Charles Lowery takes up the consequences of modern society’s “conflation of an associated way of living with government, and government with politics, and politics with partisanship” on conceptions of community in his article, “The Role of Education in The Public and Its Problems: A Deweyan Perspective on Political Literacy.” Building on key authors that have previously advanced this line of inquiry central to Dewey’s The Public and Its Problems, Lowery attends to how contemporary education and the development of a politically literate citizenry through democratic habits rather than knowledge accumulation should be centered as the central task of schooling. Drawing on Dewey’s claim in Democracy and Education that “Education is not an affair of ‘telling’ and being told, but an active and constructive process,” Gordon describes a mathematics for democracy. Gordon describes mathematics as a powerful force in the development of students’ reflective intelligence and their capacity for problem-solving by problem-clarifying strategies rather than problem-solving procedures (for example, “take things apart, make the problem simpler, reason by analogy, and tinker”) and collaboration through “multiple-centers” which capitalizes on shared-interest investigations.Dave Powell explores the relationship between inquiry and Dewey’s pragmatic epistemology to advance democratic citizenship education in the social studies classroom in his article, “Has Anybody Here Seen My Old Friend John? Das Problem der Nicht-Identität ist eines der zentralen Probleme der gegenwärtigen Philosophie. Es ergibt sich, wenn versucht wird, das Wohl künftig lebender, das heißt gegenwärtig (noch) nicht existierender Individuen in den Bereich moralischer Berücksichtigung zu holen. Obwohl seine Brisanz für Fragen der Metaethik, aber auch der Zukunfts- oder Umweltethik sowie der Ethik der Reproduktionsmedizin offenkundig ist, und die Debatte darüber seit Derek Parfits Diskussion des Problems in seinem Werk Reasons and Persons von 1984 bis heute nicht an Fahrt und (...) Hitzigkeit verloren hat, gilt es noch immer als ungelöst. Auch dieser Artikel soll einen Beitrag zur Suche nach der Lösung des Problems der Nicht-Identität leisten, nicht aber, indem ein weiterer Lösungsvorschlag unterbreitet wird, sondern indem gezeigt wird, dass es sich in weniger Fällen ergibt als in der Literatur suggeriert wird. Es soll gezeigt werden, dass viele der in der Literatur diskutierten, vermeintlichen Nicht-Identitäts-Fälle „schon jetzt“, das heißt ohne die seit Parfits Diskussion des Problems gesuchte „Theory X“, welche die lang ersehnte Lösung verspricht, gefunden zu haben, lösbar sind, weil es sich bei diesen überhaupt nicht um genuine Nicht-Identitäts-Fälle handelt. Hierzu erfolgt nach einer kurzen Erläuterung des Problems zunächst eine Darstellung und Analyse einiger „klassischer“ Nicht-Identitäts-Fälle. Anschließend wird in zwei Schritten für eine neuartige Einschränkung des Problembereichs des Nicht-Identitäts-Arguments – also des Arguments, das letztlich zum Problem der Nicht-Identität führt – argumentiert. Die Einführung dieser Einschränkung beziehungsweise Fallunterscheidung bringt für die weiterfolgende Debatte zwei methodologisch wichtige Erkenntnisse mit sich: Nicht nur kann das Problemfeld des Nicht-Identitäts-Arguments deutlich eingegrenzt werden. Auch der Anwendungsbereich des gesuchten Prinzips, welches das Problem der Nicht-Identität zu lösen vermag, fällt kleiner aus als gemeinhin angenommen wird. Dies mag zwar dort, wo sich das Problem der Nicht-Identität wirklich ergibt, nichts von seiner Brisanz nehmen. Doch hilft es, allzu häufigen Verweisen auf das Nicht-Identitäts-Argument Einhalt zu gebieten, und sich bei der Suche nach einer Lösung fortan auf genuine Problemfälle zu konzentrieren. (shrink)
