  1. Value Monism, Richness, And Environmental Ethics.Chris Kelly - 2014 - Les ateliers de l'éthique/The Ethics Forum 9 (2):110-129.
The intuitions at the core of environmental ethics and of other neglected value realms put pressure on traditional anthropocentric ethics based on monistic value theories. Such pressure is so severe that it has led many to give up on the idea of monistic value theories altogether. I argue that value monism is still preferable to value pluralism and that, indeed, these new challenges are opportunities to vastly improve impoverished traditional theories. I suggest an alternative monistic theory, Richness Theory, and show (...)

Building Bridges with Accessible Care: Disability Studies, Feminist Care Scholarship, and Beyond.Christine Kelly - 2013 - Hypatia 28 (4):784-800.
This article uses elements of autoethnography to theorize an in/formal support relationship between a friend with a physical disability, who uses attendant services, and me. Through thinking about our particular “frien-tendant” relationship, I find the common scholarly orientations toward “care” are inadequate. Starting from the conversations between feminist and disability perspectives on care, I build on previous work to further develop the theoretical framework of accessible care. Accessible care takes a critical, engaged approach that moves beyond understanding “accessibility” as merely (...)

  3. The impossibility of incommensurable values.Chris Kelly - 2008 - Philosophical Studies 137 (3):369 - 382.
Many recent attacks on consequentialism and several defenses of pluralism have relied on arguments for the incommensurability of value. Such arguments have, generally, turned on empirical appeals to aspects of our everyday experience of value conflict. My intention, largely, is to bypass these arguments and turn instead to a discussion of the conceptual apparatus needed to make the claim that values are incommensurable. After delineating what it would mean for values to be incommensurable, I give an a priori argument that (...)

Teamsters and Turtles?: U.S. Progressive Political Movements in the 21st Century.Frank L. Davis, Melissa Haussman, Ronald Hayduk, Christine Kelly, Joel Lefkowitz, Immanuel Ness, Laura Katz Olson, David Pfeiffer, Meredith Reid Sarkees, Benjamin Shepard, James R. Simmons, Solon J. Simmons & Claude E. Welch (eds.) - 2002 - Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
After decades of single issue movements and identity politics on the U.S. left, the series of large demonstrations beginning in 1999 in Seattle have led many to wonder if activist politics can now come together around a common theme of global justice. This book pursues the prospects for progressive political movements in the 21st century with case studies of ten representative movements, including the anti-globalization forces, environmental interest groups, and new takes on the peace movement.

The Challenge of Rousseau.Eve Grace & Christopher Kelly (eds.) - 2012 - Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
Written by prominent scholars of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's philosophy, this collection celebrates the 300th anniversary of Rousseau's birth and the 250th anniversary of the publication of Emile. The depth and systematic character of Rousseau's thought was recognized almost immediately by thinkers such as Kant and Hegel, yet debate continues over the degree to which Rousseau's legacy is the result of poetic, literary or rhetorical genius, rather than of philosophic rigor or profundity. The authors focus on Rousseau's genuine yet undervalued stature as (...)

The Rousseauian Mind.Eve Grace & Christopher Kelly (eds.) - 2019 - New York: Routledge.
Jean- Jacques Rousseau is a major figure in Western Philosophy and is one of the most widely read and studied political philosophers of all time. His writings range from abstract works such as On the Social Contract to literary masterpieces such as The Reveries of the Solitary Walker as well as immensely popular novels and operas. The Rousseauian Mind provides a comprehensive survey of his work, not only placing it in its historical context but also exploring its contemporary significance. Comprising (...)

Police–suspect interactions and confession rates are affected by suspects’ alcohol and drug use status in low-stakes crime interrogations.Angelica V. Hagsand, Hanna Zajac, Lovisa Lidell, Christopher E. Kelly, Nadja Schreiber Compo & Jacqueline R. Evans - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
BackgroundLow-stakes crimes related to alcohol and/or drugs are common around the world, but research is lacking on police–suspect interactions of such crimes. A large proportion of these suspects are intoxicated during interrogations, and many may have substance use disorder, making them potentially vulnerable to interrogative pressure.MethodsTo address this lack of knowledge, the taxonomy of interrogation methods framework and a common classification of question types were applied in the coding of written police interrogations. Two archival studies, one pilot and one main (...)

  14. A Theory of the Good.Chris Kelly - 2003 - Dissertation, University of Colorado at Boulder
Our lives are flooded with value claims. We evaluate our breakfast and the weather. We evaluate the actions of our politicians and our spouse. We talk of good routes to work and good routes through life. Many of our evaluative claims are a matter of much dispute, and some of these disputes are the most important in our lives, particularly disputes about what is right and wrong, and what makes our lives good. To settle these disputes one must know what (...)

Beyond Measure? Disability Art, Affect and Reimagining Visitor Experience.Christine Kelly & Michael Orsini - 2021 - Studies in Social Justice 15 (2):288-306.
Disability, mad and d/Deaf arts are motivated to transform the arts sector and beyond in ways that foreground differing embodiments. But how do we know if such arts-based interventions are actually disrupting conventional ways of experiencing and consuming art? This article presents three themes from a critical literature review relevant to curating and creating artwork meant to spur social change related to non-normative bodies. We highlight examples that push beyond standard survey measurement techniques, such as talk-back walls and guided tours (...)

§ 1 On the Magistracies of the Roman State Sometime in the mid sixth century, John Lydus (“the Lydian”), then a professor of Latin at the State University of Constantinople, decided to write his autobiography. John had led an eventful life (at least in his own re-telling). He was born around 490 in Philadelphia, the chief city of the province of Lydia on the western coast of Asia Minor. In 511, after an expensive education, which included learning Latin, he left (...)

The Roman Empire: A Very Short Introduction.Christopher Kelly - 2006 - Oxford University Press.
The Roman Empire was a remarkable achievement. With a population of sixty million people, it encircled the Mediterranean and stretched from northern England to North Africa and Syria. This Very Short Introduction covers the history of the empire at its height, looking at its people, religions and social structures. It explains how it deployed violence, 'romanisation', and tactical power to develop an astonishingly uniform culture from Rome to its furthest outreaches.

The notorious Treatise of the Three Impostors is so shrouded in mystery that those who study it invariably compare their endeavors to detective work. The mysteries investigated by these scholarly sleuths include the identity of the author of the Treatise, issues involving its dissemination, and even questions about the existence of some editions cited by contemporaries. This volume contains a new, accurate translation of one version of the Treatise along with related works which were published together in a 1777 edition. (...)
