Cancer and the breakdown of multicellularity: What Dictyostelium discoideum, a social amoeba, can teach us.Sabateeshan Mathavarajah, Carter VanIderstine, Graham Dellaire & Robert J. Huber - 2021 - Bioessays 43 (4):2000156.
Ancient pathways promoting unicellularity and multicellularity are associated with cancer, the former being pro‐oncogenic and the latter acting to suppress oncogenesis. However, there are only a limited number of non‐vertebrate models for studying these pathways. Here, we review Dictyostelium discoideum and describe how it can be used to understand these gene networks. D. discoideum has a unicellular and multicellular life cycle, making it possible to study orthologs of cancer‐associated genes in both phases. During development, differentiated amoebae form a fruiting body (...)

Metaepistemology and Relativism.Joseph Adam Carter - 2016 - Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan.
Is knowledge relative? Many academics across the humanities say that it is. However those who work in mainstream epistemology generally consider that it is not. Metaepistemology and Relativism questions whether the kind of anti-relativistic background that underlies typical projects in mainstream epistemology can on closer inspection be vindicated.

  4. Diagrams and proofs in analysis.Jessica Carter - 2010 - International Studies in the Philosophy of Science 24 (1):1 – 14.
This article discusses the role of diagrams in mathematical reasoning in the light of a case study in analysis. In the example presented certain combinatorial expressions were first found by using diagrams. In the published proofs the pictures were replaced by reasoning about permutation groups. This article argues that, even though the diagrams are not present in the published papers, they still play a role in the formulation of the proofs. It is shown that they play a role in concept (...)

  5. Easy Practical Knowledge.Timothy Kearl & J. Adam Carter - 2024 - Journal of Philosophy.
We explore new connections between the epistemologies of mental rehearsal and suppositional reasoning to offer a novel perspective on skilled behavior and its relationship to practical knowledge. We argue that practical knowledge is "easy" in the sense that, by manifesting one's skills, one has a priori propositional justification for certain beliefs about what one is doing as one does it. This proposal has wider consequences for debates about intentional action and knowledge: first, because agents sometimes act intentionally in epistemically hazardous (...)

Does an educative approach work? A reflective case study of how two Australian higher education Enabling programs support students and staff uphold a responsible culture of academic integrity.Carol Carter, Michelle Picard, Snjezana Bilic, Tamra Ulpen & Anthea Fudge - 2022 - International Journal for Educational Integrity 18 (1).
IntroductionEnabling education programs, otherwise known as Foundation Studies or Preparatory programs, provide pathways for students typically under-represented in higher education. Students in Enabling programs often face distinct challenges in their induction to academic culture which can implicate them in cases of misconduct. This case study addresses a gap in the enabling literature reporting on how a culture of academic integrity can be developed for students and staff in these programs through an educative approach.Case descriptionThis paper outlines how an educative approach (...)

  7. Frege on the Tolerability of Sense Variation: A Reply to Michaelson and Textor.Bryan Pickel & J. Adam Carter - 2024 - Australasian Journal of Philosophy.
In several passages, Frege suggests that successful communication requires that speaker and audience understand the uttered words and sentences to have the same sense. On the other hand, Frege concedes that, in many ordinary cases, variation in sense is tolerable. In a recent article in this journal, Michaelson and Textor (2023) offer a new interpretation of Frege on the tolerability of sense variation according to which variation in sense is tolerable when the conversation aims at joint action, but not when (...)

Minds and Computers: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence.Matt Carter - 2007 - Edinburgh University Press.
Could a computer have a mind? What kind of machine would this be? Exactly what do we mean by 'mind' anyway? The notion of the 'intelligent' machine, whilst continuing to feature in numerous entertaining and frightening fictions, has also been the focus of a serious and dedicated research tradition. Reflecting on these fictions, and on the research tradition that pursues 'Artificial Intelligence', raises a number of vexing philosophical issues. Minds and Computers introduces readers to these issues by offering an engaging, coherent, (...)

Mathematics Dealing with 'Hypothetical States of Things'.Jessica Carter - 2014 - Philosophia Mathematica 22 (2):209-230.
This paper takes as a starting point certain notions from Peirce's writings and uses them to propose a picture of the part of mathematical practice that consists of hypothesis formation. In particular, three processes of hypothesis formation are considered: abstraction, generalisation, and an abductive-like inference. In addition Peirce's pragmatic conception of truth and existence in terms of higher-order concepts are used in order to obtain a kind of pragmatic realist picture of mathematics.

Developing a State University System Model to Diversify Faculty in the Biomedical Sciences.Robin Herlands Cresiski, Cynthia Anne Ghent, Janet C. Rutledge, Wendy Y. Carter-Veale, Jennifer Aumiller, John Carlo Bertot, Blessing Enekwe, Erin Golembewski, Yarazeth Medina & Michael S. Scott - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Amid increasing demands from students and the public, universities have recently reinvigorated their efforts to increase the number of faculty from underrepresented populations. Although a myriad of piecemeal programs targeting individual recruitment and development have been piloted at several institutions, overall growth in faculty diversity remains almost negligible and highly localized. To bring about genuine change, we hypothesize a consortia approach that links individuals to hiring opportunities within a state university system might be more effective. Here we present a case (...)

Death by a Thousand Cuts: Insurrectionist Ethics in a Present less Oppressive than the Past.Jacoby Adeshei Carter - 2023 - In Jacoby Adeshei Carter & Darryl Scriven, Insurrectionist Ethics. Radical Perspectives on Social Justice. Palgrave. pp. 255-278.
This chapter is intended to provide a new definition of insurrectionist ethics that cuts in many ways against the grain of positions already engraved in the literature. That is done by considering the various elements of a novel definition of insurrectionist ethics. One that treats fundamental, structural, and systemic oppression as the conditions that give warrant to an insurrectionist response. A notion of necro-depictions is articulated as an essential conceptual tool to understanding the duty to insurrect or resist oppression. It (...)

We shall proceed as follows: In section ii, we shall give a brief over-view of the literature on Gilbert, more to indicate general directions of interest than to present any in-depth analysis. Then, in the main body of this presentation, section iii, we will present three ways in which we think it is accurate to claim that Gilbert influenced Descartes. These are: (1) Gilbert gave Descartes a new definition of an organ; (2) Gilbert gave Descartes a new definition of what (...)

    Game theory and decentralisation.Alan Carter - 1999 - Journal of Applied Philosophy 16 (3):223–234.
Whereas many environmentalists have traditionally argued in favour of small‐scale, decentralised communities as a solution to the environmental crises which we appear to face, some environmental political theorists have recently argued against decentralisation. In this article I first show that game theory seems, at first glance, to support the insistence by statists that decentralisation is highly impracticable. But, second, I then attempt to demonstrate that, on closer inspection, game theory actually provides considerable support for the decentralist case.

Indicators of Freedom.Ian Carter - 1999 - In A Measure of Freedom. Oxford University Press.
A distinction should be made between the theoretical possibility of measuring freedom and the practical possibility of doing so. Most of this book has been concerned with the theoretical possibility of measuring freedom. Given the various practical difficulties involved in quantifying available action, some empirical indicators need to be found. Nevertheless, the search for such indicators without a theoretical understanding of that which they are intended to indicate is difficult. One possibility is to be found in a combination of an (...)

  38. Kvanvig on Pointless Truths and the Cognitive Ideal.J. Adam Carter - 2011 - Acta Analytica 26 (3):285-293.
Jonathan Kvanvig has recently attempted to reconcile the problem of (apparently) pointless truths with the claim that the value of truth is unrestricted—that truth is always and everywhere valuable. In this paper, I critically evaluate Kvanvig’s argument and show it to be defective at a crucial juncture. I propose my own alternative strategy for generating Kvanvig’s result—an alternative that parts ways with Kvanvig’s own conception of the cognitively ideal.
