American-Japanese cultural differences in judgements of emotional expressions of different intensities.David Matsumoto, Theodora Consolacion, Hiroshi Yamada, Ryuta Suzuki, Brenda Franklin, Sunita Paul, Rebecca Ray & Hideko Uchida - 2002 - Cognition and Emotion 16 (6):721-747.
Although research has generated a wealth of information on cultural influences on emotion judgements, the information we have to date is limited in several ways. This study extends this literature in two ways, first by obtaining judgements from people in two cultures of expressions portrayed at different intensity levels, and second by incorporating individual level measures of culture to examine their contribution to observed differences. When judging emotion categories in low intensity expressions, American and Japanese judges see the emotion intended (...)

Effectiveness of tutorials for promoting educational integrity: a synthesis paper. [REVIEW]Anastassiya Yudintseva & Brenda M. Stoesz - 2018 - International Journal for Educational Integrity 14 (1).
The prevalence of plagiarism, cheating, and other acts of academic dishonesty may be as high as 80% in populations of high school and post-secondary students. Various educational interventions have been developed and implemented in an effort to educate students about academic integrity and to prevent academic misconduct. We reviewed the peer-reviewed research literature describing face-to-face workshops, e-learning tutorials, or blended approaches for promoting academic integrity and the effectiveness of these approaches. In general, the educational interventions were described as effective in (...)

  6. Clinical equipoise and the incoherence of research ethics.Franklin G. Miller & Howard Brody - 2007 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 32 (2):151 – 165.
The doctrine of clinical equipoise is appealing because it appears to permit physicians to maintain their therapeutic obligation to offer optimal medical care to patients while conducting randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The appearance, however, is deceptive. In this article we argue that clinical equipoise is defective and incoherent in multiple ways. First, it conflates the sound methodological principle that RCTs should begin with an honest null hypothesis with the questionable ethical norm that participants in these trials should never be randomized (...)

Five Conducts (Wu Xing 五行) and the Grounding of Virtue.Franklin Perkins - 2014 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 41 (3-4):503-520.
There is now a general consensus that Xunzi's criticism of Zisi and Mengzi for advocating wu Xing 五行 is explained by the excavated text known as Five Conducts, but the five conducts play no significant role in the Mengzi. This article aims to determine more precisely what the Mengzi and Wu xing have in common, while also making sense of the ways in which they diverge. The first part of the article analyzes the distinction between goodness and de 德. The (...)

In Dialogue: A Response to Elizabeth Gould,?The Nomadic Turn: Epistemology, Experience and Women College Band Directors?Stephen Franklin Zdzinski - 2005 - Philosophy of Music Education Review 13 (2):195-199.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:A Response to Elizabeth Gould, “The Nomadic Turn: Epistemology, Experience, and Women College Band Directors”Stephen Franklin ZdzinskiI want to thank Elizabeth Gould for providing us with a thought-provoking paper examining the journeys of women university band directors through a post-modernist and feminist perspective. Input and Age‐Dependent Variation in Second Language Learning: A Connectionist Account.Marius Janciauskas & Franklin Chang - 2018 - Cognitive Science 42 (S2):519-554.
Language learning requires linguistic input, but several studies have found that knowledge of second language rules does not seem to improve with more language exposure. One reason for this is that previous studies did not factor out variation due to the different rules tested. To examine this issue, we reanalyzed grammaticality judgment scores in Flege, Yeni-Komshian, and Liu's study of L2 learners using rule-related predictors and found that, in addition to the overall drop in performance due to a sensitive period, (...)

The role of community engagement in addressing bystander risks in research: The case of a Zika virus controlled human infection study.Seema K. Shah, Franklin Miller & Holly Fernandez Lynch - 2020 - Bioethics 34 (9):883-892.
There is limited guidance on how to assess the ethical acceptability of research risks that extend beyond research participants to third parties (or “research bystanders”). Community or stakeholder engagement has been proposed as one way to address potential harms to community members, including bystanders. Despite widespread agreement on the importance of community engagement in biomedical research, this umbrella term includes many different goals and approaches, agreement on which is ethically required or recommended for a particular context. We analyse the case (...)

The Ethics of Continued Life‐Sustaining Treatment for those Diagnosed as Brain‐dead.Jessica du Toit & Franklin Miller - 2016 - Bioethics 30 (3):151-158.
Given the long‐standing controversy about whether the brain‐dead should be considered alive in an irreversible coma or dead despite displaying apparent signs of life, the ethical and policy issues posed when family members insist on continued treatment are not as simple as commentators have claimed. In this article, we consider the kind of policy that should be adopted to manage a family's insistence that their brain‐dead loved one continues to receive supportive care. We argue that while it would be ethically (...)

Preston, Harker Rhodes & Emily R. Murphy - 2010 - American Journal of Bioethics Neuroscience 1 (2):15-17.
In this open peer commentary, we categorize the possible “neuroscience in national security” definitions of misuse of science and identify which, if any, are uniquely presented by advances in neuroscience. To define misuse, we first define what we would consider appropriate use: the application of reasonably safe and effective technology, based on valid and reliable scientific research, to serve a legitimate end. This definition presents distinct opportunities for assessing misuse: misuse is the application of invalid or unreliable science, or is (...)

    Character-Infused Ethical Decision Making.Brenda Nguyen & Mary Crossan - 2022 - Journal of Business Ethics 178 (1):171-191.
Despite a growing body of research by management scholars to understand and explain failures in ethical decision making (EDM), misconduct prevails. Scholars have identified character, founded in virtue ethics, as an important perspective that can help to address the gap in organizational misconduct. While character has been offered as a valid perspective in EDM, current theorizing on how it applies to EDM has not been well developed. We thus integrate character, founded in virtue ethics, into Rest’s (1986) EDM model to (...)
