The question of substance in the philosophy of physics has three branches: logical, physical, and epistemological. The first is a problem in pure philosophy: is the notion of “ substance ” in any sense a “ category,” i.e. forced upon us by the general nature either of facts or of knowledge? The second is a question of the interpretation of mathematical physics: is it necessary, or convenient to interpret our formulae in terms of permanent entities with changing states and relations? Bypassing occurs on sharing platforms when users decide to finalize the exchange directly with each other and engage in tactics to circumvent the payment stage. While previous studies have focused on the antecedents associated with bypass practices, more research is needed to better understand the prevalence of bypassing, which bypass practices are enacted, which types of users bypass, and which do not. Using a mixed-methods design, we first conduct semi-structured interviews (_N_ = 19) to identify several motivations behind bypass tactics (...) that complement the existing literature. We also establish four different bypassing behaviors: (1) paying the other peer directly, (2) transacting via another platform, (3) a combination of on- and off-platform booking, and (4) repeat transactions. Next, by carrying out cluster analysis on a sample of Airbnb users (_N_ = 416), we uncover three groups of bypassers: serial maximizers, rookies, and safe players. Further analysis of Airbnb users who have never bypassed shows that they can be categorized into three additional segments: risk-conscious users, hassle-avoiders, and borderline bypassers. Each of these six groups corresponds to a specific profile, which we describe and characterize based on motivational, relational, and psychographic factors. This research provides an actionable segmentation framework that will help sharing platform managers develop tailored bypass mitigation strategies. (shrink)

Détente or Destruction, 1955-57 continues publication of Routledge's multi-volume critical edition of Bertrand Russell's shorter writings. Between September 1955 and November 1957 Russell published some sixty-one articles, reviews, statements, contributions to books and letters to editors, over fifty of which are contained in this volume. Thus, I will try to show that if, all other things being equal, it is morally acceptable to have a child based on a selfish desire, then it is morally acceptable to have a pet for the same reason. Having a child does not lead to the same ethical issues as having a pet. I will show that, despite some constraints, a pet’s life can be perfectly enjoyable. This volume of Bertrand Russell's Collected Papers finds Russell focused on writing Principia Mathematica during 1905–08. Eight previously unpublished papers shed light on his different versions of a substitutional theory of logic, with its elimination of classes and relations, during 1905-06. A recurring issue for him was whether a type hierarchy had to be part of a substitutional theory. In mid-1907 he began writing up the final version of Principia , now using a ramified theory of types, and eleven (...) unpublished drafts from 1907-08 deal with this. In this article, we extend the research on the public interest to non-audit engagements performed by accounting firms and public accountants. Our thesis is that non-audit engagements, as private goods, require a distinct approach to the public interest than auditing. We suggest that a public value perspective can be used conceptually to provide substantial criteria for designing non-audit engagements conducive to public value creation and greater accountability. We illustrate the applicability and consequences of a public value perspective by analyzing and (...) contrasting the decision of two judicial opinions deciding whether Deloitte and the lead partner of a consulting engagement failed to act in the public interest in engineering the sale of collapsed British carmaker MG Rover. We advocate for a significant change in ethical codes of conduct by defining public interest obligations, not only in terms of professional attributes, but also in terms of outcomes. Our approach also suggests a requirement regarding planning a non-audit engagement, including establishing a public value proposition detailing the planned nature of the engagement, and extent of the assessment of the intended public value creation. We discuss the aspirational function of codes of conduct to provide accountability other than in terms of technical output, and to maintain the legitimacy and purpose of the profession. (shrink)
