In the work of both Matti Eklund and John Hawthorne there is an influential semantic argument for a maximally expansive ontology that is thought to undermine even modest forms of quantifier variance. The crucial premise of the argument holds that it is impossible for an ontologically "smaller" language to give a Tarskian semantics for an ontologically "bigger" language. After explaining the Eklund-Hawthorne argument (in section I), we show this crucial premise to be mistaken (in section II) by developing a Tarskian (...) semantics for a mereological universalist language within a mereological nihilist language (a case which we, and Eklund and Hawthorne, take as representative). After developing this semantics we step back (in section III) to discuss the philosophical motivations behind the Eklund- Hawthorne argument’s demand for a semantics. We ultimately conclude that quantifier variantists can meet any demand for a semantics that might reasonably be imposed upon them. (shrink)

We study relation algebras with n-dimensional relational bases in the sense of Maddux. Fix n with 3nω. Write Bn for the class of non-associative algebras with an n-dimensional relational basis, and RAn for the variety generated by Bn. We define a notion of relativised representation for algebras in RAn, and use it to give an explicit equational axiomatisation of RAn, and to reprove Maddux's result that RAn is canonical. Le texte suggère la complexité et l’ambiguïté de l’identité des travailleuses de l’artisanat ; celle-ci est le résultat d’une stratification de facteurs culturels et économiques. La supplique montre que les femmes peuvent (et savent) négocier leur place dans le monde du travail. D’un côté, la suppliante (...) s’appuie sur des argumentations qui évoquent explicitement sa place dans l’économie familiale et font appel aux stéréotypes sur son sexe (et notamment à son rôle d’épouse et mère soucieuse d’assurer le bien-être de sa famille). De l’autre côté, en rappelant qu’elle a investi sa dot dans l’activité artisanale, elle évoque le risque d’en rester dépourvue (et devenant ainsi “indotata”) et la chute sociale et économique conséquente. How can we find any satisfying assignment for a Boolean formula that has many satisfying assignments? There exists an obvious randomized algorithm for solving this problem: one can just pick an assignment at random and check the truth value of the formula for this assignment, this is iterated until a satisfying assignment occurs. Does there exist a polynomial-time deterministic algorithm that solves the same problem? This paper presents such an algorithm and shows that its worst-case running time is linear when (...) input formulas are in k-CNF and a fraction of satisfying assignments is greater than a constant. This algorithm is almost the same as the algorithm proposed by Monien and Speckenmeyer in the early 1980s for less than 2n steps 3-SAT decision.Another result of this paper is that if a formula in k-CNF has many satisfying assignments, then there exists a short satisfying assignment, i.e. an assignment of truth values to a small number of variables. The proposed algorithm yields just such a short satisfying assignment. We also show that there exist formulas in general CNF having many satisfying assignments, that have no short satisfying assignments. (shrink)

Two mechanisms of the formation of antiphase-boundary tubes resulting from the shortening of Kear-Wilsdorf locks are examined in the light of a recent paper by Chiu and Veyssie ¤ re. The mechanism based on bypassing KW locks and subsequent annihilation of the screw dipole by cross-slip is considered in more detail. It is concluded that the objections raised by Chiu and Veyssie ¤ re against this mechanism are not valid, and that the predictions of the mechanism are consistent with their (...) experimental observations. Questions are raised as to whether some of their observations are inconsistent with the operation of the mechanism based on the motion of jogs whose corners are relaxed by forced climb. (shrink)

In this article we establish the undecidability of representability and of finite representability as algebras of binary relations in a wide range of signatures. In particular, representability and finite representability are undecidable for Boolean monoids and lattice ordered monoids, while representability is undecidable for Jónsson's relation algebra. We also establish a number of undecidability results for representability as algebras of injective functions.

This is a strikingly original, rich, and trenchant study. Its point of departure is the notion of discrimination, which is shown to illuminate a range of topics in metaphysics and epistemology, including subjectivity, observationality, sorites paradoxes, and identity criteria. A central problem involves the phenomenal character of experience. We are intuitively tempted to say that character is subjective in the sense that distinct characters must be discriminable. This seems to imply that matching experiences--that is, experiences which are indiscriminable in character--must (...) have the same character. We find familiar cases, however, in which the experiences x and y match, and the experiences y and z match, but x and z do not match. Williamson defends the subjectivity of character by arguing that a pair of characters may be indiscriminable as presented by one pair of experiences but discriminable as presented by another pair of experiences. Hence the indiscriminability of characters is indeed sufficient for their identity, which makes characters subjective, but the matching of experiences is not sufficient for the experiences' having the same character.
