The research presented in this article aims to contribute both quantitatively and qualitatively to the discussion on family versus non-family businesses' differences in ethical core values, culture and ethical climate. The purpose of our article is to better understand the association between the degree of involvement of a family in an enterprise and its influence on the enterprise's core values, culture and ethical climate as the constitutional elements of enterprise ethical behaviour. The research indicates that family as well as non-family (...) enterprises maintain positive attitudes towards the core values with ethical content. Regarding the type and strength of culture as well as the type of ethical climate, our research results indicate significant differences between family and non-family enterprises. (shrink)

Purpose This paper aims to shed light on the threats that young people living in refugee camps face in their use of Facebook. While social media enable a participatory process of communication (Russo et al., 2008), which is based on the agency of the communicator and defined by their own cultural and moral goals (Lee et al., 2023), these platforms can at times be inappropriately pursued if the communicator lacks relevant skills. The outcome of such a pursuit can also inadvertently (...) damage social cohesion in the camp and lead to conflict. Design/methodology/approach A total of 17 semi-structured interviews were carried out in 2023 with young people between the ages of 20 and 29 living in Kakuma refugee camp. The young refugees were asked questions related to their own behaviour and practices on Facebook and to those of their peers. The focus was specifically on the context of the interactions with other youth in Kakuma and on the camp’s Facebook groups or pages. Findings Findings reveal that limited knowledge, understanding and awareness of the functioning and affordances of social media platforms such as Facebook are leading young refugees towards multiple risks involved in public online interactions. This has significant negative impacts not only on the lives of the youth who are active on social media in the camp but also on the relationships with their peers and overall community harmony. Originality/value A number of studies have identified some of the dangers arising for refugees operating in online spaces, and particularly on social media platforms (see, for example, Tech Transparency Project, 2022; Dekker et al., 2018). Yet, there is a lack of research on the outcomes that young refugees face in their immediate virtual and physical environment as a result of their online behaviour. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first to bring to light the nature of the interactions and the dynamics that young, encamped refugees engage in on Facebook and to offer useful reflections that can inform digital literacy efforts carried out by development agencies. The inclusion of morally binding values such as religious—or in a broader sense, spiritual—values fundamentally alter organizational decision-making and ethical behavior. Family firms, being a particularly value-driven type of organization, provide ample room for religious beliefs to affect family, business, and individual decisions. The influence that the owning family is able to exert on value formation and preservation in the family business makes religious family firms an incubator for value-driven and faith-led decision-making and behavior. They represent a particularly rich and (...) relevant context to re-assess the relationship between ethical beliefs, decision-making processes and behaviors in business organizations at the interface between family and professional logics. This Special Issue is dedicated to deepening our understanding of the role religious values and spirituality play in the formation of organizational ethical practices in faith-led family firms and resulting organizational and family-related outcomes. In this editorial, we introduce the 10 papers included in this Special Issue, which investigate the relationship between religion or spirituality and family firm ethical behavior in various geographical, cultural and religious contexts, using a multitude of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. By focusing on the effects of religious or spiritual orientations on both the business and the family, as well as on the values, norms and goals present in the family business system, further research can gain a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between religious and spiritual believes, and sustainable ethical behavior in family firms. Još od 2001., nakon što je Kina odabrana za domaćina Olimpijskih igara 2008., taj je izbor bio izvorom niza kontroverzi koje su se većinom usredotočile na pitanja ljudskih prava. Na ove kritičke ocjene odgovoreno je mjerama kineskih vlasti: od 2003. godine ustavnim amandmanom koji se referira na »azijske vrijednosti« i uvođenje Hu Jintaovog programa »harmoničnog društva«. Rad se pretežno usredotočuje na međukulturne aspekte rasprave o statusu ljudskih prava u Kini. Prvo se analiziraju glavna pitanja i uspoređuju različiti načini na koje (...) se pristupalo ljudskim pravima kako u Kini tako i u inozemstvu. Zatim se analiziraju neusklađenosti tih ocjena unutar dvaju osnovnih okvira: doktrine univerzalnih ljudskih prava i doktrine harmoničnog društva, zasnovanog na konfucijanskom svjetonazoru. Završno se preispituju aktualne rasprave o problemima ljudskih prava pomoću međukulturne supostavljenosti navedenih dvaju okvira i mogućnosti dijaloga tih dviju ocijenjenih pozicija. (shrink)

After a short introduction into the history of the building of the Physics Institute of the University of Breslau, the development under Otto Lummer is sketched: influenced by the newly founded Technische Hochschule, the building as well as the faculty, were enlarged. The collection of instruments for instruction and research was built up and the cooperation with industry and with guests from abroad strengthened. Young scientists were promoted, making Lummer’s institute into one of the leading ones in optics at that (...) time. (shrink)

Cioran (1911-1995) hatte als junger rumänischer Stipendiat der Humboldt-Stiftung die Gelegenheit, Ende 1933 eine Gastvorlesung Ludwig Klages’ (1872-1956) an der Berliner Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu hören. Klages’ Lebensphilosophie, namentlich seine biozentrische Metaphysik, wie sie vor allem in seinem gerade erschienenen Hauptwerk Der Geist als Widersacher der Seele (1929/1932) zur Sprache kommt, sollte tiefe Spuren bei Cioran hinterlassen. Zentrale Klages’sche Philosopheme ziehen sich fortan wie ein roter Faden durch Ciorans Œuvre: von dem in archaischen Zeiten stattgefundenen dämonischen Einbruch des Geistes ins (...) Leben und der damit verbundenen Entstehung des schmerzlichen, weil isolierenden Bewusstseins über die Herausbildung des rational-logisch-kausalen Denkens und des Aufkommens des Willens bis hin zum Machbarkeits- und Fortschrittswahn des Menschen, der mithilfe von Wissenschaft und Technik unausweichlich zu apokalyptischer Zerstörung führt. Die Exegeten des Cioran’schen Schaffens haben zwar den generellen Einfluss der Klages’schen Philosophie registriert, doch Ausmaß und Tragweite dieser speziellen Rezeptionsgeschichte blieben bislang unentdeckt.
