Genetics and the Law.Aubrey Milunsky, George J. Annas, National Genetics Foundation & American Society of Law and Medicine - 2012 - Springer.
Society has historically not taken a benign view of genetic disease. The laws permitting sterilization of the mentally re tarded~ and those proscribing consanguineous marriages are but two examples. Indeed as far back as the 5th-10th centuries, B.C.E., consanguineous unions were outlawed (Leviticus XVIII, 6). Case law has traditionally tended toward the conservative. It is reactive rather than directive, exerting its influence only after an individual or group has sustained injury and brought suit. In contrast, state legislatures have not been (...)

Edge of the screen.Murray Pomerance - 2024 - New York: Bloomsbury Academic.
This book is a series of seventeen mediations that revolve around the notion of the viewer's placement at the edge of the screen to reconsider what it is that we watch when we watch a film, what happens to us, and how we make sense of and appreciate it. This book analyzes several films, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Memento, Zabriskie Point, An American in Paris, Planet of the Apes (1968), Superman (1978), Possessed, The Jungle Book (1942), The Spy Who (...)

    Mobility of women into the economic mainstream.Marshall I. Pomer - 1983 - Journal of Business Ethics 2 (3):185 - 189.
Being a woman hinders advancement in the labor market, an inequity which perpetuates the conconcentration of women in low-paid jobs. Analysis of 1970 United States Census data reveals that women in low-paid occupations have a much lower probability of upward mobility than men. Low-paid service jobs, which are typical for women, provide less opportunity than other jobs. However, even after adjusting for differences in occupation and industry, as well as controlling for age and schooling, women are far less likely than (...)

Thinking in the Dark: Cinema, Theory, Practice.Murray Pomerance & R. Barton Palmer (eds.) - 2015 - New Brunswick, New Jersey: Rutgers University Press.
Today’s film scholars draw from a dizzying range of theoretical perspectives—they’re just as likely to cite philosopher Gilles Deleuze as they are to quote classic film theorist André Bazin. To students first encountering them, these theoretical lenses for viewing film can seem exhilarating, but also overwhelming. _Thinking in the Dark _introduces readers to twenty-one key theorists whose work has made a great impact on film scholarship today, including Rudolf Arnheim, Sergei Eisenstein, Michel Foucault, Siegfried Kracauer, and Judith Butler. Rather than (...)

Assessing the Prerequisite of Successful CSR Implementation: Are Consumers Aware of CSR Initiatives? [REVIEW]Alan Pomering & Sara Dolnicar - 2009 - Journal of Business Ethics 85 (S2):285 - 301.
As a reflection of the values and ethics of firms, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has received a large amount of research attention over the last decade. A growing area of this research is the CSR-consumer relationship. Results of experimental studies indicate that consumer attitudes and purchase intentions are influenced by CSR initiatives-if consumers are aware of them. In order to create this awareness, business is increasingly turning to 'pro-social' marketing communications, but such campaigns is met with scepticism and their effectiveness (...)

Early childhood educational research: issues in methodology and ethics.Carol Aubrey (ed.) - 2000 - New York: RoutledgeFalmer Press.
Provision of education for children under five has recently become a political concern. At the same time, this relatively small field has been attracting increased research attention, with many early years practitioners seeking routes to initial and higher degrees. This book offers essential guidance for researchers and newcomers to the field, outlining opportunities in research as well as useful, sensitive and appropriate methods for researching childhood education.

The one and the many in the Israelite conception of God.Aubrey Rodway Johnson - 1961 - Cardiff,: University of Wales Press.
If the argument of this short study is sound, we have here a point of view which needs to be borne in mind as an aid to the solution of, not only textual and literary problems, but even more those problems which are associated with the attempt to employ such terms as 'polytheism' and 'monotheism' in connexion with Israelite thought, and also those which are inherent in the question of the prophetic psychology or, again, that of revelation. It may also (...)

    The Ethical Health Lawyer.Philip L. Pomerance - 2005 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 33 (2):375-379.
Health care may be the most regulated industry in the United States, at least in terms of the volume of State and Federal laws and regulations that affect business practices. Lawyers who counsel health care clients often face a dilemma: is the client seeing legitimate advice about the legal limitations on his or her conduct, or is the client seeking to use the lawyer's skills to evade the law? The history of health care fraud prosecutions involving lawyers and other professional (...)

    The Irrational in Politics.G. S. Pomerants - 1993 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 32 (1):6-15.
In the sixties I attempted to comprehend the Zen paradox: 1,400 years of handing down a tradition through absurd statements. I had to construct a theory of the absurd. It led me to the conclusion that not only connections among words could be absurd ; connections among objects themselves could also be absurd. God hung on the cross seemed an absurdity. The Apostle Paul acutely felt this absurdity, and later Tertullian felt it even more acutely. A thousand years later, for (...)
