This review article discusses Andrzej Bielecki’s book _Models of Neurons and Perceptrons: Selected Problems and Challenges_, as published by Springer International Publishing. This work exemplifies “philosophy in science” by adopting a broad, multidisciplinary perspective for the issues related to the simulation of neurons and neural networks, and the author has addressed many of the important philosophical assumptions that are entangled in this area of modeling. Bielecki also raises several important methodological issues about modeling. This book is recommended for any (...) philosophers who wish to learn more about the current state of neural modeling and find inspiration for a deeper philosophical reflection on the subject. This book provides a detailed exposition of one of the most practical and popular methods of proving theorems in logic, called Natural Deduction. It is presented both historically and systematically. Also some combinations with other known proof methods are explored. The initial part of the book deals with Classical Logic, whereas the rest is concerned with systems for several forms of Modal Logics, one of the most important branches of modern logic, which has wide applicability.

The present paper was written as a contribution to ongoing methodological debates within the NCC project. We focus on the neural correlates of conscious perceptual episodes. Our claim is that the NCC notion, as applied to conscious perceptual episodes, needs to be reconceptualized. It mixes together the processing related to the perceived contents and the neural substrate of consciousness proper, i.e. mechanisms making the perceptual contents conscious. We thus propose that the perceptual NCC be divided into two constitutive subnotions. The (...) main theoretical idea that emerges as a consequence of this reconceptualization is that the neural correlate of a perceptual episode is formed in the neural interaction between content-processing and consciousness-conferring mechanisms. National healthcare systems in all countries do not act effectively. Therefore, especially strategies for introducing organizational innovation to public organization should be considered. The problem is how to organize the research in this field. One of the generally accepted solutions is the systemic approach to healthcare systems. In this paper multiagent systems theory and autonomous systems theory are applied to the analysis of main types of healthcare systems. Such analysis allows us to consider the system properties: the level of the (...) autonomy, energy dissipation in the system, the payoff specificity, functional role of the agents in the system, the level of the agents’ cooperation, and delays in flows of money, requests, rules, and controls. As a result, some new functionalities of the healthcare system on the national level have been found and analysed. The aforementioned parameters are good tools to analyse the system functionality. The evolutionary function of love is to create a strong bond between the partners with reproduction in view. In order to achieve this goal, humans use various sexual/reproductive strategies, which have evolved due to specific reproductive benefits. The use of particular strategies depends on many factors but one of the most important is early childhood experiences, on which life history theory focuses. John Lee identified 6 basic love styles: eros, ludus, storge, pragma, agape, and mania. Our goal was to check (...) whether love styles may be treated as sexual/reproductive strategies in the context of LHT - slow or fast strategy. In our study we found that people who prefer the slow reproductive strategy are inclined to show passionate, pragmatic and friendly love, and those who prefer the fast strategy, treated love as a game. A low level of environmental stress in childhood results in preferring eros, storge and agape love styles, belonging to the slow strategy, and a high one results in preferring ludus, which belongs to the fast strategy. People representing eros, storge or pragma styles have restricted sociosexual orientation so they prefer long-term relationships, whereas those with the ludus style are people with unrestricted orientation, preferring short-term relationships. Besides, storge, agape and pragma seem to determine preferring qualities connected with parental effort in one’s partner, mania - with mating effort, and eros - with both kinds of effort. No correlation was found between the love style and the number of children. (shrink)

The article shows the inadequacy of understanding micro-objects in terms of the ontologies of substantial individual beings and the irreducible metaphorically of such concepts as “particle”, “wave” or “individual object”. An attempt was made to construct the concept of a quantum object as a conceptual blend, using the blending theory.

This paper deals with some metaphilosophical aspects of the modal ontological argument originating from Charles Hartshorne. One of the specific premises of the argument expresses the idea that the existence of God is not contingent. Several well-known versions of the argument have been formulated that appeal to different ways of clarifying the latter. A question arises: which of the formally correct and relevant versions is proper or basic? The paper points to some criteria of formal correctness, and distinguishes two types (...) of relevance for these versions: strong and weak. Its aim is to furnish a strictly worked out answer to the question, taking into account each of these types. As a result, a very simple, formally correct and relevant version of the modal ontological argument is formulated. The results obtained are also used to criticize a popular belief about the relations in which the main versions of the modal ontological argument stand to one another. (shrink)

The paper analyses three versions of skepticism: the attitude of a general withholding of belief; the attitude of general doubt and the view that all beliefs are unjustified. It is shown on the basis of epistemic logic that only the first of these versions can be deemed not to be self-contradictory.

The identity connective is usually interpreted in non-Fregean logic as an operator representing the identity of situations. This interpretation is related to the modal criterion of the identity of sentence correlates, characteristic of the WT system and some stronger systems. However, this connective can also be interpreted in a different way – as an operator representing the identity of propositions. The “propositional” interpretation is in turn associated with the modal-contents criterion of the identity of sentence correlates. This begs the question (...) of whether there is a system of non-Fregean logic, providing an adequate formalization of this criterion. The aim of the paper is to systematize the metalogical and philosophical context of the issue and to point to a system that provides its solution. (shrink)

W artykule pojęcie teorii ontologicznej zostało zdefiniowane zgodnie z ogólnymi zasadami wywodzącymi się z metaontologii Arystotelesa. Sformułowano problem struktury ontologii: Jakie są główne metodologiczne typy zaksjomatyzowanych teorii ontologicznych i jakie podstawowe relacje zachodzą między nimi? Zauważono, że zarówno w tradycyjnej, jak i we współczesnej filozofii bytu da się wyróżnić trzy odmienne idee formalnej ontologii: logicznej, eksplikacyjnej i empirycznej. Cel pracyjest dwojaki: 1) wskazaniejednolitej koncepcji formalnej ontologii uwzględniającej owe idee i dostarczającej rozwiązania problemu struktury ontologii oraz 2) zastosowanie wskazanej koncepcji w (...) konstrukcji podstawowych przykładów teorii bytu i czasu. Artykuł składa się z następujących sekcji: Wprowadzenie. 1.1. Trzy koncepcje ontologii formalnej. 1.2. O ontologii logicznej. 1.3. O eksplikacyjnej ontologii formalnej. 2.1. Niniejszy numer „Studiów Semiotycznych” jest w całości poświęcony filozoficznej problematyce podstaw matematyki. Podjęte tematy dotyczą w szczególności kwestii natury przedmiotowego odniesienia terminów matematycznych, prawdy matematycznej i rozstrzygalności problemów matematycznych. The trouble of proving the effects of participation lies in the mismatch between three aspects of ownership: physical, legal and psychological. In our interdisciplinary systemic model of ownership, we propose 10 relationships related to ownership/participation from: „A is a part of B” - greatest involvement to „A does not know about B” - the least involvement. „A” and „B” may take different values of: a person, an institution, a community, a group, an object. Once formalized we can view the studies (...) in participation from one, system theory point of view, and formulate hypotheses related to many aspects of ownership. A multilevel analysis with multiple measures of both participation and effectiveness from two data sets has supported the proposed model. (shrink)

Relations between theory and empirical knowledge belong to basic problems in philosophy of science and have been undergone detailed philosophical reflection, including epistemological aspects. During last several dozen years, due to development of computer technology, numerical simulations became a common tool in natural sciences. Their epistemological aspects, however, have not worked out yet. A specific role of computer simulations manifests in subcellular biology, where possibilities of performing experiments and observations are limited. Computer simulation is complementary to observation and experiment and (...) comes into complex relations with them. It allows us to come to a conclusion if experiment or observations are impossible to perform. In particular, simulations allow researchers to estimate the parameters that cannot be measured. The present experiment investigated the relations of narcissism with social value orientation under façade conditions of testing communal or agentic traits. The results indicated that narcissism predicted less willingness to share resources with others and more competitive orientation in a façade communal condition compared to the remaining two conditions: control and agentic. The results confirm narcissistic disregard for communal domain and are consistent with the extended agency model of narcissism and the “success as a drawback” effect.

Basic theses of the article are the following: 1) Politics is inexplicable without relating it to the category of commonweal. 2) Acceptation of this category has some philosophical and ethical implications: it involves universalism, rationalism, personalistic character of participation. Finally, politics is defined as,,a wise endeavour after commonweal”.

The problem of algorithms is, I think, also the question of the framework by which we determine the validity of our knowledge. The frames built with the help of algorithms are strong, unambiguous and legible. This causes that algorithmic sciences are called, in colloquial language, ‘exact’ and the knowledge constructed in this way is referred to as ‘specific’. Not everyone is thinking about the fact that algorithms provide certain knowledge, but only if we meet certain restrictive conditions, we will build (...) new, additional kind of framework. According to Odo Marquard, this will be the case if we decide to dominate exclusive reason. This reason, i.e. the rejecting, bypassing and reducing reason, will bypass and disregard all the limitations that algorithmic knowledge carries, sometimes emphasizing the extremely arrogant basic advantage of algorithmic knowledge, i.e. its certainty. The article analyzes the issues of the so-called strategy of rationality. The problem is known to social psychology. The author tries to show that similar problems also appear in the area of philosophy. He presents that there is an interesting correlation between philosophy and psychology in this area.

It is a story presenting various hiking trips “with Karol Wojtyła”. During these trips a lot of philosophical and scientific problems were discussed. That produced a basis for seminars including those which were held in Castel Gandolfo in 1980–2003.

Atomism is the programme explaining all changes in terms of invariant units. The development of physics during the 20th century may be treated as a spectacular triumph of atomism. However, paradoxically, changes and conceptual difficulties brought about by quantum mechanics lead to the conclusion that the ontological model provided by classical atomism has become inadequate. Atoms (and elementary particles) are not atomos—indivisible, perfectly solid, unchangeable, ungenerated and indestructible (eternal), and the void is not simply an empty space. According to quantum (...) mechanics and quantum field theory, there is no unchanging substance at all. If we want to understand contemporary notions of matter and develop an ontological model of the world, consistent with contemporary natural sciences, we should probably go beyond the conceptual framework of atomic philosophy. Mechanika kwantowa wprowadziła nowy zestaw rewolucyjnych idei, takich jak dualizm korpuskularno-falowy, superpozycja stanów, nieoznaczoność, komplementarność, splątanie i całkowicie nowe podejście do prawdopodobieństwa. Mechanika kwantowa została stworzona w celu wyjaśnienia paradoksalnych odkryć, całkowicie niemożliwych do wyjaśnienia w ramach fizyki klasycznej. Współcześnie podobną sytuację możemy znaleźć w naukach o poznaniu i teoriach decyzji – wiele odkryć wydaje się paradoksalnych z punktu widzenia klasycznej teorii prawdopodobieństwa. Na przykład w pewnych warunkach ludzie szacują prawdopodobieństwo koniunkcji zdarzeń A i B jako większe niż prawdopodobieństwo z (...) członów koniunkcji, co jest nazywane błędem koniunkcji, w innych okolicznościach oceniają prawdopodobieństwo sumy zdarzeń A lub B jako mniejsze niż prawdopodobieństwo jednego ze zdarzeń, co jest nazywane błędem dysjunkcji.Celem niniejszego artykułu jest omówienie podstawowych idei programu badawczego Quantum Cognition, który jest zastosowaniem abstrakcyjnego formalizmu mechaniki kwantowej do modelowania czynności poznawczych i procesów decyzyjnych. Kwantowa teoria prawdopodobieństwa, pierwotnie stworzona w celu opisania pomiaru w mechanice kwantowej, wydaje się skutecznym narzędziem w modelowaniu czynności poznawczych i procesów decyzyjnych. Podano argumenty, że 1) twierdzenie o realnym istnieniu przeszłości, teraźniejszości i przyszłości jest tylko jedną z możliwych filozoficznych interpretacji czasoprzestrzeni szczególnej teorii względności, a teza o obiektywnym upływie czasu jest możliwa do pogodzenia z fizyką współczesną; 2) determinizm jest istotnie ograniczony przez probabilistyczny charakter jednej z fundamentalnych teorii fizyki współczesnej jaką jest mechanika kwantowa; 3) podejście redukcjonistyczne jest istotnie ograniczone przez (...) teorię chaosu deterministycznego, w której zachowanie układów fizycznych jest opisywane przez nieliniowe równania różniczkowe, a także przez sytuację poznawczą w mechanice kwantowej. The phenomenon of financialization is multifaceted and can be considered from different points of view. The main purpose of the article is to show how financialization affects the erosion of the common good. To achieve this, various negative sides of financialization are described, referring to the eight principles of the common good: effective use of limited resources, freedom, prosperity, justice, responsibility, solidarity, primacy of interpersonal relations and institutional principle. Further considerations concern the presentation of possible solutions to the problem of (...) financialization. Two perspectives are selected. First, the answer of Catholic social teaching to the phenomenon of financialization, as presented in the form of the Vatican document Oeconomicae et pecuniariae quaestiones from May 2018. Next, one of the main causes of financialization is shown: economic and financial theories, which has become the theoretical foundation for the phenomenon. On this basis, the need for new theoretical solutions based on the institutional approach in the science of economics and finance is discussed. Possible new alternative approaches, including the concept of financial personalism, are also recognized. (shrink)

This paper presents Michael Heller’s notion of “philosophy in science” and re-introduces Michael Heller’s classical text that first presented this concept of philosophy entitled How is “philosophy in science” possible?. The paper discusses the historical context of Heller’s idea as it emerged from the discussions and works of the Krakow philosophical scene and discusses the basic tenants of this philosophy, its analytic character, the role of intellectual tradition in the development of this philosophy, and the critical role played by an (...) interdisciplinary dialogue between philosophy, science, and theology. Despite the idea of philosophy in science having emerged about 40 years ago, this concept still inspires and fuels innovative research. The notion of “philosophy in science” lies at the foundations of the philosophy published in two journals: Philosophical Problems in Science and Philosophy in Science. (shrink)

"The importance of questions is beyond doubt. But the degree of attention paid to them in logic and linguistics is still less than they deserve." What is a question? How to represent questions in formal languages? How to model reasoning in which questions are involved? Can we prove anything by means of pure questioning? How to model goal-directed problem solving? These are the main issues of Andrzej Wi niewski's "Questions, Inferences, and Scenarios." This book offers a state-of-the-art exposition of (...) Inferential Erotetic Logic, that is, an approach to the logic of questions focused on inferences which lead to questions as conclusions. Wi niewski characterizes semantic relations which determine validity of these inferences within the framework of Minimal Erotetic Semantics, applicable to a wide range of formal languages. He elaborates in detail the concept of erotetic search scenario, a tool for modelling problem solving. Moreover, the author presents some applications of Inferential Erotetic Logic in proof theory. Andrzej Wi niewski is one of the most prominent contemporary researchers in the logic of questions. Currently, he is a full professor at the Department of Logic and Cognitive Science, Institute of Psychology, Adam Mickiewicz University in Pozna, Poland. (shrink)
