From the Visual to the Auditory in Heidegger’s Being and Time and Augustine’s Confessions.Andrew Fuyarchuk - 2024 - Open Philosophy 7 (1):11-34.
Studies about the influence of sound and ambient environments on understanding and the affects, prior to intentional acts of consciousness, are employed to rectify self-fragmentation exemplified in Heidegger and Augustine. Due to a visual bias that suppresses his auditory disposition in Being and Time, Heidegger gestures toward Dasein’s fulfillment in social-being yet also recoils from it. To ameliorate this impasse, his underdeveloped modification of existence is revisited by way of Augustine’s attunement to rhetoricity during his conversion experience. As a result (...)

    (1 other version)Word Made Flesh—Organic Process: Inner Word in Gadamer.Andrew Fuyarchuk - 2015 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 42 (1):577-588.
Interpretations of the inner word overlook the fact that for Gadamer language is both written and spoken and that these two mediums are in a dialectical relation. After disputing Zimmermann’s interpretation of the inner word, the paper uses McLuhan to explain Gadamer’s dialectical method for understanding how thought that comes to language participates in the self-unfolding structure of a living organism. Central to this argument is a turn of the inner ear which in contrast to sensory memory based on sight (...)

  3. Gadamer – Cheng: Conversations in Hermeneutics.Andrew Fuyarchuk - 2021 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 48 (3):245-249.
1 Introduction1 In the 1980s, hermeneutics was often incorporated into deconstructionism and literary theory. Rather than focus on authorial intentions, the nature of writing itself including codes used to construct meaning, socio-economic contexts and inequalities of power,2 Gadamer introduced a different perspective; the interplay between effects of history on a reader’s understanding and the tradition(s) handed down in writing. This interplay in which a reader’s prejudices are called into question and modified by the text in a fusion of understanding and (...)

Gadamer and the yijing's Language of Nature: Hermeneutics and Chinese Aesthetics.Andrew Fuyarchuk - 2020 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 47 (3-4):174-192.
Although their value-judgments diverge, neo-Confucian and American continental philosophers agree that Gadamer's hermeneutics is anti-foundationalist. Neither side, however, has asked why he frequently appeals to standards of harmony, or why he models the art of medicine on the order of nature. These indicate a commitment to trans-historical foundation of One and many that forms the basis for comparisons with Chinese aesthetics in the Yijing tradition. These foundations are grounded in Gadamer's reading of Plato and shape his onto-dialogical interpretive method. In (...)

A Philosophy of Constancy in Change: Reading Gadamer in Light of Fundamental Themes in Chung-Ying Cheng.Andrew Fuyarchuk - 2025 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 51 (2-3):177-189.
The Western tradition of metaphysics has been criticized by Chung-ying Cheng on the grounds that it does not have any fruitful bearing on practice. This judgement, however, depends on a concept of metaphysics that Gadamer overturns with a Pythagorean-Platonic ontology. When this side of his philosophy is developed in tandem with Cheng’s onto-generative hermeneutics, in particular its doctrine of harmonization, new possibilities for self-understanding in relation to the grounds of existence are charted: The event of Being emerges from the reciprocity (...)

    Introduction: Interpreting Philosophical Classics—Chinese and Western.Andrew Fuyarchuk - 2015 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 42 (1-2):4-9.
The essays in this special edition of the Chinese Journal of Philosophy represent a wealth of creativity stemming from the task of making connections between orientations that are geographically, historically and culturally separated from one another. This indicates that there are ways in which to land upon contextualised aspects of universality without any pretense toward universalism. In this respect, Professor Chung-ying Cheng’s onto-generative hermeneutics informs many of the ideas that find expression in the arguments. His thirty-years of research defines the (...)

    Recovering Ontology in Anglo-American Interpretations of Hermeneutics: Chung-ying Cheng and Hans-Georg Gadamer.Andrew Fuyarchuk - 2022 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 49 (3):281-293.
Whereas a selective yet representative sample of Anglo-American scholarship undermines its own intentions to explain Gadamer’s language-ontology and theory of time by confusing the ground of beings with beings, Cheng and Gadamer explain how a transformation in human existence allows for a temporalization of Being in time that incorporates the subjectivity of the human subject. This argument draws on the dual structure of their cosmogenic worldview in the source and origins of their traditions (Lao Zi/Heraclitus) and has implications for Cheng’s (...)

The Inner Voice in Gadamer’s Hermeneutics: Mediating Between Modes of Cognition in the Humanities and Sciences.Andrew Fuyarchuk - 2017 - Lanham: Lexington Books.
This book addresses the alleged divide between the humanities and sciences. Rather than bridging the divide from the side of the sciences and phenomenology, Andrew Fuyarchuk proposes to close the distance with Gadamer’s hermeneutics, liberating the inner word from the theological paradigms and rethinking it in terms of a phenomenology of the senses and cognitive and evolutionary sciences.
