What sets someone on a life trajectory? This question is at the heart of studies of 21st-century neurosciences that build on scientific models developed over the last 150 years that attempt to link psychopathology risk and human development. Historically, this research has documented persistent effects of singular, negative life experiences on people’s subsequent development. More recently, studies have documented neuromolecular effects of early life adversity on life trajectories, resulting in models that frame lives as disproportionately affected by early negative experiences. (...) This view is dominant, despite little evidence of the stability of the presumably early-developed molecular traits and their potential effects on phenotypes. We argue that in the context of gaps in knowledge and the need for scientists to reason across molecular and phenotypic scales, as well as time spans that can extend beyond an individual’s life, specific interpretative frameworks shape the ways in which individual scientific findings are assessed. In the process, scientific reasoning oscillates between understandings of cellular homeostasis and organisms’ homeorhesis, or life trajectory. Biologist and historian François Jacob described this framework as the “attitude” that researchers bring to bear on their “objects” of study. Through an analysis of, first, historical and contemporary scientific literature and then ethnographic research with neuroscientists, we consider how early life trauma came to be associated with specific psychological and neurobiological effects grounded in understandings of life trajectories. We conclude with a consideration of the conceptual, ontological, and ethical implications of interpreting life trajectories as the result of the persistence of long-embodied biological traits, persistent life environments, or both. This volume presents an extended version of the contributions presented at the workshop "Kant's Concept of Law" held at the 26th World Congress of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (IVR) in 2013. It handles issues of applied legal philosophy in Kant's Doctrine of Right such as ownership, the alleged right of necessity, the right of resistance and the right of revolution. With each of these applied issues, the focus lies, on the one hand, on the (...) relationship between the principles a priori of law and of the duties of rights, as well as their normative requirements - for instance, the duty of independence from the coercion by others - and, on the other hand, empirical situations and their pressing demands. Human chromosome 11p15 comprises two imprinted domains important in the control of fetal and postnatal growth. Novel studies1-3 establish that imprinting at one of these, the IGF2-H19 domain, is epigenetically deregulated (with loss of DNA methylation) in Silver-Russell Syndrome (SRS), a congenital disease of growth retardation and asymmetry. Previously, the exact opposite epigenetic alteration (gain of DNA methylation) had been detected at the domain's ‘imprinting control region’ (ICR) in patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS), a complex disorder of fetal overgrowth. However, (...) more frequently, BWS is caused by loss of DNA methylation at the ICR that regulates the second imprinted domain at 11p15. Interestingly, a similar epigenetic alteration (with loss of methylation) at a putative ICR on human chromosome 6q24, is involved in transient neonatal diabetes mellitus (TNDM), a congenital disease with intrauterine growth retardation and a transient lack of insulin. RésuméLes tentatives modernes entreprises pour fonder définitivement les mathématiques ont mis à nu la situation suivante:si l'on essaie d'éliminer les antinomies et les concepts «trop forts» de la théorie des ensembles tout en conservant un point de vue platonicien analogue au point de vue classique, on est forcé de recourir à des restrictions motivées de façon purement dogmatique;si, d'autre part, l'on essaie d'adopter un point de vue formaliste intégral, on se heurte à la nécessité d'envisager des «vérités platoniciennes» relatives aux (...) systèmes formels;enfin l'essai hilbertien d'envisager la théorie de ces systèmes formels comme une théorie d'objets concrètement donnés ne tient visiblement pas compte des réalités.Il s'ensuit que les méthodes usuelles de la théorie moderne des fondements des mathématiques ne permettent pas d'accéder à un point de vue objectif sans cornposante dogmatique — ceci pour des raisons de méthode primaires par rapport aux détails des solutions proposées.Il est alors nécessaire d'envisager un type tout à fait différent de théorie des fondements des mathématiques. Elle nous réfère à une étude épistémologique du langage.SummaryThe modern attempts to establish a deflnitive foundation for mathematics have laid bare the following situation:if one tries to eliminate the antinomies and the 6 very strong R concepts of set theory whilst preserving a Platonist standpoint analogous to the classical one, one is obliged to establish restrictions that are justified only by dogmatic reasons;on the other hand if one tries to maintain a purely formalist point of view, one finds oneself confronted with the necessity of introducing «platonic truths» with respect to the formal systems;finally the Hilbertian attempt to build the theory of these systems as a theory of concretely given objects is obviously not based on facts.The consequence of all this is that the usual methods in the foundations of mathematics do not enable us to reach apurely objective standpoint devoid of dogmatic components. ‐ The reason for this lies in questions of method which are of a primary nature as compared with the details of the various solutions that have been brought forth.This entails the necessity of taking into account quite a different type of theory for the foundations of mathematics. Mathematical reflection about abstract objects appears as an epistemological dafum that ought to be studied on its own account ‐ previous to any interpretation, Platonist or not. The starting‐point of such a study will be the fact that merely by disposing of certain concepts we dispose already of a certain knowledge. Its object will be an epistemological study of this knowledge.This way of posing the problem necessarily takes us beyond the limits of a purely mathematical‐logical investigation; it refers us to an epistemological investigation of human language. Ne pas « fixer », c’est se débarrasser des représentations, étiquettes qui figent les autres, le monde en des identités immuables, et par là même laisser la vie être ce qu’elle est, ne rien vouloir changer, ne pas s’obstiner (...) contre, être ouvert au changement. Cela rend la perte vivable. Cela rend ouvert à l’autre, au monde. C’est aussi un chemin déterminant pour s’accepter, soi, tel que l’on est, même handicapé, travail permanent d’Alexandre Jollien, et source de ses livres. Chacune des 20 pensées réunies dans celui-ci est à la fois un remède et une méditation vivante sur les obstacles qui nous écartent de la joie, et les chemins qui nous y conduisent. L’abandon, l’amitié, la détermination, la fragilité, la gratuité, etc. : autant de voies qu’Alexandre Jollien s’efforce d’expérimenter au quotidien, puisant dans les petits événements, heureux ou malheureux, qui ponctuent sa vie (une rencontre, une réflexion de ses enfants, une querelle, une impatience, une angoisse...), les ressources pour les accueillir sans souffrance. Cet article s’efforce de déterminer quel est le lien entre physique et métaphysique dans le discours nietzschéen à partir de la critique de la métaphysique qu’il opère. Nous voudrions montrer en particulier que la position de Nietzsche est sensiblement différente de deux représentations que nous pourrions facilement avoir de lui sur cette question. La première consisterait à croire que sa critique de la métaphysique entraîne dans son sillage une critique de la physique et des sciences en général. À l’opposé, la (...) seconde soulignerait chez lui un éloge vibrant des sciences de la nature, dans un esprit positiviste, qui s’accompagne d’une critique de la métaphysique. L’évaluation que Nietzche donne des sciences de la nature est en fait bien plus nuancée et ne peut être assimilée à ces deux positions. (shrink)

The analysis of the circumstances in which Alexander Luria came to send letters to Kurt Goldstein sheds some light on the historical context of their existence. The documents show how strongly Luria and some of his colleagues were interested in Goldstein’s works in the early 1930s. These documents dating from the post Second World War years also testify to the beginning of the more than purely professional relationship between the two recognized neurologists (or neuropsychologists).

Après avoir examiné les écrits bibliques, et plus largement ceux du Nouveau Testament, après avoir interrogé l'enseignement dogmatique de l'Église qui, en (...) comparaison, reste pauvre, A. Ganoczy dégage quelques grandes lignes de la recherche théologique en cours, précisant au passage les conditions pour rendre plausible une métaphore qui n'est pas un moyen de connaissance néces­sairement déficitaire.
