  2. In this chapter we review our recent experiments targeting the issue of whether visual selective attention can modulate synes-thetic experience. Our research has focused on color-graphemic synesthesia, in which letters, numbers, and words elicit vivid experiences of color. Al-though the specific associations between inducing stimuli and the colors they elicit aretypically idiosyncratic, they remain highly consistent over time for individual synesthetes (Baron-Cohen, Harrison, Goldstein &Wyke, 1993; Baron-Cohen, Wyke &Binnie, 1987). [REVIEW]Can Attention Modulate - 2005 - In Robertson, C. The effects of social anxiety on emotional face discrimination and its modulation by mouth salience.Andrew R. du Rocher & Alan D. Pickering - 2018 - Cognition and Emotion 33 (4):832-839.
ABSTRACTPeople high in social anxiety experience fear of social situations due to the likelihood of social evaluation. Whereas happy faces are generally processed very quickly, this effect is impaired by high social anxiety. Mouth regions are implicated during emotional face processing, therefore differences in mouth salience might affect how social anxiety relates to emotional face discrimination. We designed an emotional facial expression recognition task to reveal how varying levels of sub-clinical social anxiety related to the discrimination of happy and fearful (...)

Films, compared with emotional static pictures, represent true-to-life dynamic stimuli that are both ecological and effective in inducing an emotional response given the involvement of multimodal stimulation (i.e., visual and auditory systems). We hypothesized that a direct comparison between the two methods would have shown greater efficacy of movies, compared to standardized slides, in eliciting emotions at both subjective and neurophysiological levels. To this end, we compared these two methods of emotional stimulation in a group of 40 young adults (20 (...)

“Direct” and “Indirect” Effects of Histone Modifications: Modulation of Sterical Bulk as a Novel Source of Functionality.Wladyslaw A. Krajewski - 2020 - Bioessays 42 (1):1900136.
The chromatin‐regulatory principles of histone post‐translational modifications (PTMs) are discussed with a focus on the potential alterations in chromatin functional state due to steric and mechanical constraints imposed by bulky histone modifications such as ubiquitin and SUMO. In the classical view, PTMs operate as recruitment platforms for histone “readers,” and as determinants of chromatin array compaction. Alterations of histone charges by “small” chemical modifications (e.g., acetylation, phosphorylation) could regulate nucleosome spontaneous dynamics without globally affecting nucleosome structure. These fluctuations in nucleosome (...)

    Human ceremonial ritual and the modulation of aggression.Eugene G. D'Aquili - 1985 - Zygon 20 (1):21-30.
. Human ceremonial ritual is considered as an evolved behavior, one of the principal effects of which is the promotion of intragroup cohesion by decreasing or eliminating intragroup aggression. It is seen as a major determinant of what Victor Turner calls communitas in human social groups of varying extension. The frequent paradoxical effect of ritual's promoting extragroup aggression at the same time that it diminishes intragroup aggression is considered. A neuroevolutionary model of the development and social effects of ritual behavior (...)

Toward a Hybrid Passive BCI for the Modulation of Sustained Attention Using EEG and fNIRS.Alexander J. Karran, Théophile Demazure, Pierre-Majorique Leger, Elise Labonte-LeMoyne, Sylvain Senecal, Marc Fredette & Gilbert Babin - 2019 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 13:422089.
We report results of a study that utilizes a BCI to drive an interactive interface countermeasure that allows users to self-regulate sustained attention while performing an ecologically valid, long-duration business logistics task. An engagement index derived from EEG signals was used to drive the BCI while fNIRS measured hemodynamic activity for the duration of the task. Participants ( n = 30) were split into three groups (1) no countermeasures (NOCM), (2) continuous countermeasures (CCM), and (3) event synchronized, level-dependent countermeasures (ECM). (...)
