Dans le traité De la divination dans le sommeil, Aristote entend réfuter la thèse d’une origine divine des rêves qui semblent annoncer les événements futurs. Pour cela, il ne se contente pas de soutenir une thèse différente. Il dénonce également la faiblesse épistémologique de la pratique divinatoire, en proposant un modèle scientifique alternatif : une méthode de classification des rêves et de division par épuisement, qui exclut les rêves inspirés. Cette méthode conduit à souligner le caractère irréductible des faits de (...) hasard et à admettre le caractère inexplicable d’un grand nombre de rêves « véridiques ». La notion de coïncidence ( sumptôma ) joue sur ce point un rôle essentiel. Ce rôle est à la fois descriptif et critique : il permet de définir la classe des rêves dont la dimension véridique est absolument fortuite, et il dénonce l’illusion commune qui les relie à des événements réels. De ce point de vue, le chapitre 1 du De divinatione apporte une contribution, modeste mais spécifique, à la théorie des modalités physiques. (shrink)

This paper deals with the aetiological aspect of the Epicurean conception of passions. It is argued that the therapy of the soul relies on an overall explanation of the various emotional states, and that fear is at the core of this framework in so far as it is the root of most psychic troubles. The first part deals with fear in the context of the general theory of passions. The second part shows that this basic emotion is the root of (...) injustice and political excessive ambition, in Lucretius’De rerum natura. The third part puts the emphasis on the role of anxiety in passionate love, in the same text. Fear, in its various forms, appears to be the main cause of a number of pathological emotions. It may be concluded that the Epicurean therapy of emotions, far from dealing with separate passions from case to case, is based on a holistic approach of psychic states. (shrink)

The Epicurean conception of time leads to three major difficulties : there is indeed a physical objective time, though time seems to depend in itself of our representations ; time may be perceived by reason, but, according to a few texts, it is only perceived but by sensation ; finally, Epicure refuses to grant it some real unity. The latter difficulties find in part their solution in the light of the Epicurean theory of language as well as in the accidental and secondary status of time as related to events be them internal or external. Georg Agricola’s De Re Metallica (1556) is an impressive work about mining arts and sciences, still used as a reference work to understand the mining world of his time and to analyze the relationships between scholars and practitioners. This essay begins by studying how Agricola presents the underground surveying, also known as geometria subterranea. How does the author’s mathematics relate to contemporary geometry or to actual surveying practices? Second, the essay contrasts his scholarly approach with sixteenth-century administrative and technical documents, (...) as well as mining sermons. Comparing the practical geometry contained in the De Re Metallica with different kinds of sources helps to question the relationships between the arts and natural and exact sciences in the practical settings of early modern Europe. Finally, it argues for a distinction between the inquiry on the historical progress of mathematics in civil life and philosophical questions about the rise of new sciences. (shrink)

L’auteur étudie les circonstances et les évolutions de quatre médiations d’urgence en situation de conflit qu’il a exercées personnellement : la guerre entre l’Iran et l’Irak, la Géorgie, le Kirghizistan et l’Ukraine. Il en déduit une typologie originale à partir de la combinaison de différentes variables : autorité, pression du temps, degré de violence, autnomie du médiateur, contexte conflictuel, effet de seuil. Il souligne le caractère paradoxal de la médiation internationale en urgence : faire renoncer à la violence sans pouvoir (...) faire renoncer les parties à leur perception de la justice et de la vérité qui les y a conduit. L’implantation d’une nouvelle technologie est une étape de la translation d’une découverte vers une application clinique. De nombreux modèles ont été proposés pour étudier une telle translation ; celui de Goering, Holland et Kelley met de l’avant des priorités qui résonnent avec la bioéthique. Nous proposons l’application d’un outil issu des sciences de l’implantation, le Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), pour identifier les enjeux éthiques d’une nouvelle technologie. Cet outil est conçu pour identifier les barrières et facilitateurs de l’implantation (...) d’une technologie, et par le fait même s’inscrit dans le modèle de la recherche translationnelle. Nous prenons en exemple le test génomique prénatal non invasif (TGPNI). Ce test est offert dans certaines provinces du Canada en deuxième intention pour les personnes enceintes ayant une haute probabilité d’avoir un foetus avec une aneuploïdie. Des innovations potentielles du TGPNI sont de l’offrir comme test de première intention et d’étendre le nombre de conditions génétiques dépistées. Nous proposons donc d’utiliser le CFIR pour identifier les enjeux éthiques qui découlent des barrières et facilitateurs de ces innovations du TGPNI. En identifiant les barrières et facilitateurs de l’implantation d’une technologie, cet outil permet aux bioéthiciens de recourir à un outil éprouvé d’une autre discipline pour étudier des enjeux éthiques. Les bioéthiciens peuvent alors se tourner vers leurs outils traditionnels pour identifier les enjeux éthiques que soulèvent ces éléments. Notre proposition est un exemple parmi d’autres possibles de ce que cette approche peut accomplir : identifier d’une manière innovatrice des enjeux éthiques d’une nouvelle technologie. (shrink)

Despite the recent progress in the description of the molecular mechanisms of proliferation and differentiation controls in vitro, the regulation of the homeostasis of normal stratified epithelia remains unclear in vivo. Computer simulation represents a powerful tool to investigate the complex field of cell proliferation regulation networks. It provides huge computation capabilities to test, in a dynamic in silico context, hypotheses about the many pathways and feedback loops involved in cell growth and proliferation controls.Our approach combines a model of cell (...) proliferation and a spatial representation of cells in 2D using the Voronoi graph. The cell proliferation model includes intracellular (cyclins, Cyclin Dependent Kinases - CDKs, Retinoblastoma protein - Rb, CDK inhibitors) and extracellular controls (growth and differentiation factors, integrins). The Voronoi graph associates a polygon with every cell and the set of these polygons defines the tissue architecture. Thus, the model provides a quantitative model of extracellular signals and cell motility as a function of the neighborhood during time dependent simulations. (shrink)

In this study, we use a conversation analysis framework to understand the systematic organization of interactions in Periscope live video streams, and its crucial features: the talking heads orientation for the video stream, in common with video-mediated communication; the expectation that the streamer should attend to all messages as much as possible; the ‘loose’ organization of viewers’ responses to streamers’ turn-at-talk, as in multi-party chats. We also identify a distinctive design for streamers’ responses to messages, the ‘read-aloud and respond’ practice. (...) These distinctive features are oriented to the highly asymmetrical communicative affordances of Periscope streams. Without precluding other forms of Periscope-based activities, this systematic organization of talk and messages, coupled with the affordances of the application, favors a basic mode of topic initiation resting on a typical and minimal adjacent pair: viewer’s noticing/streamers’ reading and responding. We argue that the particular salience of this organization of topic initiation may account for the emergence of the dominant kind of use for Periscope streams, that is, the online public exposure of youth to strangers in order to elicit some conversation. La géométrie souterraine est une science mathématique pratique, qui se développe dans les exploitations minières et dont la diffusion est considérablement modifiée au cours du xviiie siècle. Ce phénomène est lié à l’institutionnalisation graduelle de la discipline, de l’établissement d’un système de compagnonnage à la création d’académies des mines. Progressivement, les pratiques vont faire appel à de nouvelles méthodes et intégrer une solide formation en mathématiques théoriques. La circulation et l’enseignement des connaissances sont dans un premier temps basés sur un (...) système de manuscrits qui sera étudié en détail. L’exemple du Markscheider August Beyer (1677-1753) illustre ce processus collectif de constitution et de transmission de connaissances, dont la diffusion est cependant contrôlée. Nous analysons dans un second temps l’évolution des vecteurs de circulation et son influence sur la discipline, en nous appuyant sur la biographie de deux mathématiciens saxons, J.A. Scheidhauer (1718-1784) et son discipline J.F. Lempe (1757-1801). Leurs parcours croisés symbolisent la transformation de la discipline. Le passage à l’imprimé, la publication d’articles dans des revues spécialisées et la création de chaires académiques font de la géométrie souterraine une science reconnue qui reste cependant en dehors du corpus de connaissances et des débats universitaires. Pourquoi Aristote semble-t-il refuser aux artefacts le statut de substances? Cette question fait l’objet d’interprétations divergentes. Partant d’un passage généralement négligé de Métaphysique H 3 et en s’appuyant sur plusieurs textes de Metaph. Z 7-9, on défend la thèse selon laquelle il ne suffit pas d’évoquer le fait que les formes des êtres naturels sont éternelles. La différence entre les artefacts et les êtres naturels repose surtout sur le statut ontologique et la fonction de leurs formes respectives. Le livre H (...) de la Métaphysique, pris dans son ensemble, fournit plusieurs arguments permettant d’établir que les formes d’artefact ne sont pas des formes substantielles, des formes de plein droit, mais seulement des « différences » de la matière prochaine et de simples déterminations « analogues » à la substance proprement dite. Elles ont un statut intermédiaire entre la matière prochaine et la forme substantielle ; l’artefact n’est lui-même qu’un composé accidentel. (shrink)

Several recent philosophical projects, notably Bruno Latour's empirical meta-physics, Tristan Garcia's formal ontology, Graham Harman's object-oriented philosophy, and Markus Gabriel's new realism, have insisted there is a need for an “egalitarian” or “flat” ontology that would grant an equal ontological status to entities of every kind, whether actual, abstract, material, or fictional. This article groups all of these projects under the heading of “ontological liberalism” and argues that they are inherently problematic, as they sacrifice conceptual coherence and explanatory usefulness in (...) the name of indefinite inclusion. Focusing on Gabriel's recent books Why the World Does Not Exist and Fields of Sense, and with continual reference to Peter Wolfendale's work on the topic, this essay offers a broad but detailed critique of ontological liberalism, with an eye to alternatives emerging from the discipline of anthropology. From an analysis of the famous principle ‘‘Nature does nothing in vain’’ in Aristotle’s Locomotion of animals, this paper addresses the question of the meaning and boundaries of finalism in zoology, as well as the related idea of conformity with nature. It is argued that, although ‘‘Nature does nothing in vain’’ seems to allude, at first glance, to cosmic or global teleology, the treatise On the Locomotion of Animals gives a different meaning to the formula : the teleological account, in (...) this context, depends on a local and relative finalism, which is defined in accordance with the specific and generic properties of animals, and not by reference to any alleged cosmic axiology or global causal chain. However, this principle should not be reduced to organic teleology strictly speaking, in so far as it involves also external and necessary conditions, which are common rules governing the locomotion of animals. Cet article cherche à montrer qu’amour et politique sont étroitement liés dans le De natura rerum de Lucrèce. D’une part, l’amour-passion, au Livre IV, se révèle aussi vain que le désir du pouvoir politique; d’autre part, le livre V oppose implicitement le désir sexuel des premiers êtres humains au « bien commun » qui gouverne les organisations sociales. En outre, la description, au livre IV, d’une sexualité exempte de passion, ou amour libre, caractérisée par un désir mutuel et un plaisir (...) partagé, fait office de contre-modèle ou de paradigme alternatif face à l’aliénation et à la violence politiques et sociales. En d’autres termes, l’objet de cet article est de montrer qu’amour, sexe et politique font l’objet chez Lucrèce d’une même approche, où l’on peut voir à la fois une composante importante de sa thérapie de l’âme et une profonde défiance à l’égard de la vie sociale et des activités politiques. The ability to sustain antibiotic efficacy is directly affected by incentive models aiming to stimulate antibiotic research and development. This paper analyzes the extent to which the models proposed by the Innovative Medicine Initiative-funded research project DRIVE-AB can be expected to support sustainable use, drawing on basic economic theory and the incentives that derive from it. It then discusses the use of minimal safeguards that will be needed to support sustainable use where industry incentives have not been re-aligned with those (...) of public health. (shrink)

Correlativamente, ele explica em que sentido o homem pode ser agente de suas próprias representações e o princípio de suas associações. (...) Aristóteles aborda, por conseguinte, a propósito da memória, questões fundamentais para a definição dos estados psíquicos, para a teoria do conhecimento, bem como para a concepção do eu ou da identidade pessoal. A análise da memória e da reminiscência conduz assim a uma reavaliação da concepção aristotélica do caráter, fazendo deste último o substrato e o agente de uma história pessoal que não pode ser abstraída de suas condições psicofísicas. For the senseless inira some manuscripts have inire or in arva, and the latter stands in the text of Baehrens . The attempts at emendation may be divided into two groups, those altering only inira and those tampering with ibat as well. I pass over the latter group, as Robinson Ellis, in his commentary, p. 125, has defended ibat sufficiently by reference to the frequent ñει in Babrius, Avianus’ model. The former group is represented by Withof and Robinson Ellis himself (...) ; and the editors of the Loeb text of the Minor Latin Poets, in 1934, had the verse printed with this in ora. Nobody seems to have seen that the verse-maker had to express the idea of the panther's pride. Therefore I propose ibat in (astra, a metaphorical phrase for the animal's conceit. For this metaphor cf. Horace's famous feriam sidera, for ibat Virg. Aen. 9. 641 sic itur ad astra, for in astra at the same place of the pentameter after a verb of motion Prop. 3. 18, 34 cessit in astra; Ov. Fast. 2. 478 and 3. 186 venit in astra. Avianus himself has this in astra before the last word of the pentameter in two more passages, 15. 8,19. 6. (shrink)

The decline of Naturphilosophie deeply polarized the philosophical and scientific debate. Naturalistic–materialistic positions gained powerful influence, but the latent role of the Kantian critical position also re-emerged in the context of an “ideal-realism”. I will first consider in detail two opposing treatments of Kant’s perspective. After Lotze had criticized his earlier materialistic position, advising him to read Kant, Czolbe finally addressed Kant, thereby progressing to a non-materialistic form of naturalism. However, whether to defend or to dismiss naturalism, neither philosopher addresses (...) Kant as a transcendentalist thinker, and I go on to examine this common feature in their writings. This invites us to reconsider what exactly in Kant’s system conflicts with naturalism. Is transcendentalism too broad a requisite for that task? Within “ideal-realism”, the realist part actually implies a denial of transcendental idealism; still, it shows how a realism which refuses to be naturalism could well learn from Kant. (shrink)

Une des principales difficultés posées par la conception démocritéenne de la connaissance est de savoir si ses énoncés aporétiques l'emportent sur ses énoncés positifs et si l'on peut parler de scepticisme à son propos. En présentant ces propositions en séries antithétiques, on constate que la dimension aporétique de la pensée de Démocrite est bien réelle mais qu'elle s'exprime moins par telle ou telle formule que par les rapports entre ses énoncés constitutifs. One of the main difficulties surging from the Democritean (...) conception of knowledge is to know whether his aporetic statements go beyond his positive statements and whether one may define him as sceptical. Showing such statements in the form of antithetical series, one suddenly realizes that Democritus' thought is « sceptical » indeed but is less expressed through any such formula rather than through relationships between its inherent elements of enunciation. The Greek and Roman atomistic tradition (whose most famous representatives are Democritus, Epicurus and Lucretius), defends radical and immanentist ideas about the discovery of technologies in human societies. The appearance of new technologies, insofar as it is due to the satisfaction of human needs and derives from natural necessity, reveals that human work is in some way a natural process. Consequently, human beings do not need any kind of Promethean intervention, which would provide them with new skills and technologies. However, (...) the Epicurean tradition, as evidenced by several texts (especially in Lucretius), echoes the mythological figure of Prometheus, in showing that human beings, through their discoveries, are independent from the gods. Epicurus himself, in Lucretius’ De rerum natura, embodies, like Prometheus, the ideal of human emancipation from superstitious representations of the gods. It does not mean, however, that work and technical discoveries are the best means of emancipation: for Epicurus and his followers, philosophy itself remains the safest way to tranquillity and freedom.
