Across languages, we find indefinites that trigger modal inferences. This article contributes to a semantic typology of these items by contrasting Spanish alg´un with in-.

In the war of images being waged through the cinema between Great Britain and India, the two sides are out of phase. While the Hollywood machine views India through epic stories of war and adventure, India' s riposte focuses on the intimate psychological repercussions of domination. And yet, the two traditions are bonded together by their common foundations. Does the war of images echo scores being settled over a post-modern deconstructing trend? We describe the ind- and pro- categories of the category of definable sets, in some first order theory, in terms of points in a sufficiently saturated model.

Languages that have determiners often have a rich inventory of them. In English, indefinite determiners include a(n), some, a certain, this, one, another, cardinals, partitives, the zero determiner of bare plurals (in some analyses), and, according to Horn 1999 and Giannakidou 2001, any. Despite the attention indefinites have received in the literature, characterizing what is common to all of them and what is specific to each is still an elusive task. This paper investigates the first three determiners in this list, (...) attempting to provide a semantic characterization that accounts for their distribution. (For pertinent discussion of issues that overlap to some extent with those taken up below, see Kamp and Bende-Farkas 2002, and for a discussion of the French versions of some and a certain, see Jayez and Tovena (this volume).) The Ds that concern us here share two characteristics: (i) they are indefinite, and (ii) they are existential when not in the scope of any operator or quantifier. Across languages, we find epistemic indefinites, i.e. existential determiners that can convey information about the speaker’s epistemic state.1 One such indefinite is Spanish alg´un, which marks ignorance on the part of the speaker. By using alg´un in (1a) the speaker signals that he is unable (or unwilling) to identify the doctor that Mar´ıa married. Hence, it would be odd for him to add a namely continuation that explicitly identifies the doctor in question, as in (1b). Dans le présent article, nous examinons la façon dont la coutume et le droit coutumier ont été construits par les juristes britanniques durant l’époque colonial en Inde à la fin du xviiie et aux xixe siècles. À travers l’explication de la transmission juridique, nous analysons les arguments théoriques employés par John Austin et Sumner Maine dans leur définition du droit en tant que « commandement du souverain ». Tout en décrivant les tentatives administratives coloniales de codification des droits coutumiers (...) dans le sous-continent indien, nous argumentons que deux voies de pensée ont dominé dans ce processus. D’un côté, la codification était conçue dans la tradition du droit civil au xviiie siècle par la création des « digestes » des traités juridiques hindoues et musulmanes. De l’autre côté, la position dominante au xixe siècle a accentué la codification des pratiques coutumières existantes dérivées des études anthropologiques et des enquêtes réalisées dans les régions conquises par les Britanniques tels que le Pendjab. Quoi qu’il en soit, nous évaluons les aspects épistémologiques intrinsèques au discours colonial, qui ont été soutenus par une conception particulière de la souveraineté prémoderne en Inde. Ces idées du droit coutumier se sont élaborées non seulement à travers la logique du discours colonial mais aussi dans le cadre plus large de la science du droit et de l’autorité politique impliquées dans les débats européens au xixe siècle sur la codification du droit. En 1971, Anis Kidwai, jeune veuve de la bourgeoisie intellectuelle musulmane d’Inde du Nord devenue travailleuse sociale, publiait Azadi ki chaon me (Dans l’ombre de la liberté), autobiographie bouleversante rédigée plus de vingt ans plus tôt, dans le bruit et la fureur qui accompagnèrent en 1947 la Partition de l’Inde au moment de la décolonisation. Elle met en évidence l’ampleur des violences genrées pendant la Partition, violences largement bannies des histoires nationales jusqu’aux années 1990-2000 où elles furent réexaminées (...) par les historien.nes des Subaltern Studies. Cette autobiographie constitua à cet égard une source amplement mobilisée par des historien.nes soucieux d’explorer les « consciences subalternes », dont le récit de vie fut un véhicule privilégié. À cet égard, bien que très documentée, l’autobiographie de Kidwai constitue un choix peu anodin puisqu’il conjugue le témoignage et le « littéraire », mobilise tout autant le mode du récit référentiel que celui de l’expérience historique et le registre de l’émotion. Cet article s’intéresse à cette autobiographie, sa redécouverte puis sa traduction dans les années 2000, comme témoin du changement radical de paradigme entrepris par les Subaltern Studies dans leur approche de l’histoire, et plus particulièrement de l’histoire des violences de masse. The double‐blind peer‐review of manuscripts for potential publication is a longstanding tradition in the production of scholarship. Nursing has adopted this tradition to secure a place of legitimacy and authority for its scholarship amongst the other disciplines in the academy. However, despite its ubiquity and avowed utility, the peer‐review has not generally been the subject of much research let alone intense philosophical scrutiny and debate. This manuscript attempts such an engagement with a view to uncovering specific concerns about the essentially (...) conservative and sometimes restrictive effects the double‐blind peer‐review produces. Drawing on the deconstructionist writings of Derrida and his acolytes this paper attempts to dig beneath the surface mechanics of the double‐blind peer‐review and in so doing, expose its rather shaky philosophical foundations. It is written to open debate from others who too, have harboured doubts about its adequacy and supremacy as a technology in the production of (legitimate) knowledge. (shrink)

Opening up as many sources of information as possible is particularly conducive to the development of workable policy plans and to efficient decision-making in a democratic political system. It follows that MPs can greatly benefit from using computerized information systems.As far as the parliamentary activities are concerned, we can distinguish between internal and external information flow. The contents of the parliamentary documents, the procedure for processing them and the information on the parliamentary control are part of the internal information flow. (...) The external information on the other hand refers to the relations between the MPs and the executive and the judiciary branches, supranational and international institutions as well as the library.To date, the House of Representatives has been the only assembly that has set up a computerized information system. The data bases of the House comprise : the parliamentary documents and the state of advancement of all proceedings linked to these documents until the publication of the text in the official state journal. Other databases relate to the parliamentary control : interpellations, motions, oral questions and the entire text of the written parliamentary questions.The record of the House will also be stored in a data base giving references. The library fund has been integrated in the interlibrary network DOBIS-LIBIS. A data base was also designed for the press information, and linked to an image processing system.What has been realized in the House to date must also be feasible for the other parliamentary assemblies. Viewed from that perspective, it seems advisable that data bases be centralized in one parliamentary information DP centre. Access to this centre should be particulary user-friendly and uniform, so much so that all MPs can make maximum use of it.The system set up by the House meets with an ever increasing demand from other possible users. In this context, attention should be drawn to the interconnection of this system with other parliamentary assemblies, the extension of the system to other users in the House ofthe MPs and the external access to the system via the telephone network: direct access for the universities, and for certain public and private institutions and individual MPs, and the BISTEL and/ or VIDEOTEX access.The majority of the public data bases linked to the telephone network can be interrogated via the BISTEL system, hut many interesting applications are not accessible via the telephone network as they function in closed circuits.Opening up data bases by linking them to the telephone network, implies that the problem of cost and privacy be carefully examined. As to privacy, we should reflect on the public or confidential character of the data and its consequences, on safeguarding the information stored in the system and on the evolution ofcommunications technology from the perspective of a continental European communications network.
