  1. Indigenous Beyond Exoticism.Augustin Berque - 2003 - Diogenes 50 (4):39-48.
It is the nature of the earth to lie ‘wholly spread out under the sky’: hapasê hê hupo tô kosmô keimenê (Isocrates); and the sky determines the World. Indeed it is the same as the World, as Plato states in the final words of Timaeus: ‘the World was born: it is the Sky, which is one and alone of its race’ (ho kosmos … gegonen heis ouranos hode monogenês ôn). What is thus clearly ‘one and alone of its race’ dominates (...)

    Meta-narratives on machinic otherness: beyond anthropocentrism and exoticism.Min-Sun Kim - 2023 - AI and Society 38 (4):1763-1770.
Intelligent machines are no longer distant fantasies of the future or solely used for industrial purposes; they are real “living” things that operate similarly to humans with verbal and nonverbal communication capabilities. Humans see in such technology the horrifying dangers and the bliss enabled by the saving power. Entrenched in the emotions of hope and fear concerning intelligent machines, humans’ attitudes toward intelligent machines are not free of expectations, judgments, strategies, and selfish agendas. As the discovery of the New Worlds (...)

  3. Mythologies of Tribal Art.Denis Dutton - unknown
Forty years ago Roland Barthes defined a mythology as those “falsely obvious” ideas which an age so takes for granted that it is unaware of its own belief. An illustration of what he meant can be seen in his 1957 critique of the photographic exhibition, The Family of Man . Barthes declares that the myth it promotes stresses exoticism, complacently projecting a Babel of human diversity over the globe. From this image of diversity a pluralistic humanism “is magically produced: (...)

White musical mythologies: sonic presence in modernism.Edmund Mendelssohn - 2023 - Stanford, California: Stanford University Press.
Examining a series of modernist thinkers and composers who engaged with non-European cultures as they pursued pure sound as a privileged presence, White Musical Mythologies pairs Erik Satie with Bergson, Edgard Varèse with Bataille, Pierre Boulez with Artaud, and John Cage with Derrida to offer an ambitious intellectual history of the colonial roots of modernist musical thought. Each of the musicians studied in this book re-created or appropriated non-European forms of expression as they conceived music ontologically, often thinking music as (...)

Essai sur l'exotisme: une esthétique du divers scénario.Victor Segalen - 2021 - Genève: Droz. Edited by Valérie Bucheli.

    Two Visual Excursions.Joshua C. Taylor - 1974 - Critical Inquiry 1 (1):91-102.
As some artists discovered early in the century, there is a particular pleasure and stimulation to be derived from works of art created by cultures untouched by our own traditions of form. In part this is probably a delight in exoticism, in being away from home, and in part it possibly is our sentiment for cultures we look on as traditional, in a Jungian sense, or primitive in their unquestioning allegiance to simple cultural necessity. But more significantly, without indulging (...)

The art of thinking as an intersubjective practice: Eloquence, affect, and association in the Port‐Royal Logic.Laura Kotevska & Anik Waldow - 2024 - European Journal of Philosophy 32 (4):1015-1032.
In the Port‐Royal Logic, Arnauld and Nicole argue that eloquence plays a crucial role in the cultivation of the art of thinking. In this essay, we demonstrate that Arnauld and Nicole's reflections on eloquence exemplify the need to reconceive the larger framework in which Cartesian theories of ideas operate. Instead of understanding epistemic agents as solitary thinkers who pursue their intellectual goals without the influence of others, our analysis shows that for Arnauld and Nicole thinking well was an intersubjective discursive (...)

Immersive Art and Urban Heritage: An Interdisciplinary Study of Socio-Environmental Justice in Houston and Amsterdam.Asma Mehan & Sina Mostafavi - 2024 - In Fernando Moral-Andrés, Elena Merino-Gómez & Pedro Reviriego (eds.), Decoding Cultural Heritage: A Critical Dissection and Taxonomy of Human Creativity through Digital Tools. Cham, Switzerland: Springer. pp. 439–456.
This chapter navigates the confluence of immersive design, critical mapping, urban heritage, and socio-environmental justice. It elucidates the potential of these intersecting domains to engender inclusivity, bolster urban resilience, and challenge prevailing power dynamics within urban spaces. Initially, the chapter illuminates the nuances of critical mapping, emphasizing its pivotal role in understanding and advocating for socio-environmental justice within the tapestry of urban heritage. By taking Amsterdam and Houston as primary case studies, the exploration accentuates the power of immersive art and (...)

  11. Metaphors in arts and science.Walter Veit & Ney Milan - 2021 - European Journal for Philosophy of Science 11 (2):1-24.
Metaphors abound in both the arts and in science. Due to the traditional division between these enterprises as one concerned with aesthetic values and the other with epistemic values there has unfortunately been very little work on the relation between metaphors in the arts and sciences. In this paper, we aim to remedy this omission by defending a continuity thesis regarding the function of metaphor across both domains, that is, metaphors fulfill any of the same functions in science as they (...)

Imagology and Exoticism in Montesquieu’s Persian Letters.Yousefi Behzadi Majid - 2013 - Human and Social Studies 2 (3):113-123.
This article aims at highlighting the specificities of Gaston Bachelard’s «La poétique de la rêverie», seen as the pivot of Motesquieu’s imaginary creation in Persian Letters. The Same and the Other are two essential terms when trying to find the place imagology plays in an intercultural approach where France and Persia are associated with an enchanted exoticism. Criteria such as space, taste, the marvellous and verisimilitude will be examined in order to analyse the images vehiculated by the perceived society (...)

Avant Garde in Chinese Art.Curtis Carter - unknown
The question that I propose to examine here is to what extent or in what sense there has been an avant-garde presence in Chinese art. And in what sense is the avant-garde present in contemporary Chinese art connected to avant-garde in the west. Before examining the relevance of the avant-garde to developments in Chinese art, it is necessary to provide a brief account of avant-garde in western art.

The work of art in the age of AI reproducibility.Misha Rabinovich & Caitlin Foley - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-3.
Walter Benjamin wrote his prophetic essay, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” almost a century ago, yet it is still pertinent today. Benjamin warned that as art becomes devoid of aura through reproduction, less attention is needed to engage with it. What role does aura play in AI-generated work? Despite recent advances in AI it produces “artwork” that for the most part operates as entertainment. It can’t produce work that has grown out of reckoning with culture (...)

The Art of Compromise: New Maps in Local Gazetteers of the Late Qing Dynasty.Jiajing Zhang - 2022 - Isis 113 (4):829-840.
In the late Qing dynasty (1644–1911), local gazetteer maps helped to disseminate the innovations of longitude and latitude used in Western cartography. The use of longitude and latitude lines alongside the traditional Chinese cartographic method of “grid scales” suggests that mapmakers chose an ingenious compromise to accommodate new knowledge alongside traditional practices.
