Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary effort to understand the structures and functions of the brain and brain-mind relations. This effort results in an increasing amount of data, generated by sophisticated technologies. However, these data enhance our descriptive knowledge, rather than improve our understanding of brain functions. This is caused by methodological gaps both within and between subdisciplines constituting neuroscience, and the atomistic approach that limits the study of macro- and mesoscopic issues. Whole-brain measurement technologies do not resolve these issues, but rather (...) aggravate them by the complexity problem. The present article is devoted to methodological and epistemic problems that obstruct the development of human neuroscience. We neither discuss ontological questions nor review data, except when it is necessary to demonstrate a methodological issue. As regards intradisciplinary methodological problems, we concentrate on those within neurobiology and psychology. As regards interdisciplinary problems, we suggest that core disciplines of neuroscience can be integrated using systemic concepts that also entail human-environment relations. We emphasize the necessity of a meta-discussion that should entail a closer cooperation with philosophy as a discipline of systematic reflection. The atomistic reduction should be complemented by the explicit consideration of the embodiedness of the brain and the embeddedness of humans. The discussion is aimed at the development of an explicit methodology of integrative human neuroscience, which will not only link different fields and levels, but also help in understanding clinical phenomena. To date, we know very little about the effects of the differences in attachment classifications on the physiological correlates of stress regulation in adolescent age groups. The present study examined for the first time heart rate and heart rate variability during an attachment interview in adolescents. HR and HRV data were collected during a baseline assessment as well as during the administration of the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System in a community-based sample of 56 adolescents. We additionally used the Adult (...) Attachment Interview in 50% of our sample to test the convergent validity. Adolescents with a secure attachment representation showed a higher HRV from baseline to the AAP interview compared to those with an insecure-dismissing and the unresolved group. A comparison between the two insecure attachment groups showed no significant difference related to HR and HRV. Cohen’s Kappa revealed an almost perfect agreement between the AAP and the AAI for the four-group classification. Our results indicate that adolescents with a secure attachment representation are more capable of dealing with attachment-related distress which is represented in higher HRV during an attachment interview. Since the mid-1980s, Galen Strawson has introduced an argument into the analytic debate about the concept and possibility of freedom. He has repeated and defended it in various formulations, which amounts to an “impossibilism” of freedom in the moral sense, i. e., to the impossibility that we can be called ultimately responsible for the moral quality of our actions based on existing freedom in the full sense. In this paper, I want to explain Strawson’s argument, which is supposed to prove (...) this intuitive difficulty as impossible to fulfill, and to show the conditions of its persuasiveness. Furthermore, I will make clear how and by what right philosophers like Kant, Fichte and especially Schelling were able to evade this argument avant la lettre by introducing the concept of an intelligible self-constituting act of freedom. The concept of human freedom developed by Schelling in the Freiheitsschrift (1809) prompted him to explore a new concept of time in his Weltalter project. Schelling proposes the ‘generic subjectivity of time’: Time must be understood not as a precondition of dynamism, but rather as an effect of dynamic agency. The articulation of time into its moments, ‘presence’, ‘past’, and ‘future’, is realized through the dynamic contributions (motion, causality, and action) of every single causally involved being. Schelling’s concept thus fundamentally (...) differs from Kant’s concept of time. For Kant, change and dynamism are located in the sensible world, whereas time (as well as space) is the subjective form of our sensible intuition. In diesem Versuch, die griechische Sophistik als einheitliches Phänomen neu zu deuten, wendet sich der Verfasser gegen weitverbreitete Standpunkte der Interpretation, die die Sophistik insgesamt als eine Art Aufklärungsphilosophie ansieht. Dementgegen ist die Sophistik dem archaischen Denken von Lyrik und früher Vorsokratik eng und vorwiegend konservativ verpflichtet. Ihr Denken besteht in einer ständigen Abstimmung herrschender Situationen auf Kosten eigener rationaler Konsequenz und kann deshalb als Philosophie überhaupt nicht gelten wollen. Anliegen der Sophisten ist es denn auch, dem Menschen in der (...) Mittellosigkeit (»Amechania«) als dem Element seines Daseins ein Organ aufzuzeigen, mit dem er sein Leben in einer erfolgreichen Balance zu halten vermag. Dieses Organ ist die Sprache und ihre Kunstgerechte Verwendung. Der normalen, jeden betreffenden Bedingtheit des Lebens entsprechen somit normale, jedem zugängliche Methoden der Selbstbehauptung. Diese Anwaltschaft für das Normale macht die Sophistik zu einer beispielhaften Verteidigung des beengten Lebens gegen die überfordernden Ansprüche des Unbedingten. (shrink)

Background and aimsThe COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by a worsening of mental health levels in some, while others manage to adapt or recover relatively quickly. Transdiagnostic factors such as personality functioning are thought to be involved in determining mental health outcomes. The present study focused on two constructs of personality functioning, Criterion A of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders and mentalization, as predictors of depressive symptoms and life satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic. A second focus of the study (...) was to examine whether this relationship was mediated by resilience.MethodsLinear regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between personality functioning measured by Criterion A and mentalizing abilities as predictors, and depression and life satisfaction as mental health outcomes. To assess the hypothesis that this relationship is mediated by resilience a structural equation modeling approach was conducted. Data from N = 316 individuals from the general population were collected.ResultsLinear regression models revealed highly significant associations between Criterion A/mentalization and both outcome measures. Structural equation models showed a significant partial mediation by resilience of these relationships.ConclusionOur results support the hypothesis that mentalizing serves as a protective function by promoting resilience to the impact of stress and threats. Criterion A and mentalization performed similarly as predictors of mental health outcomes, providing empirically overlapping operationalizations of personality functioning. This finding emphasizes the importance of personality functioning in positive and negative mental health outcomes. Furthermore, our results are consistent with a mediating role of resilience. IntroductionChildhood maltreatment is a developmental risk factor and can negatively influence later psychological functioning, health, and development in the next generation. A comprehensive understanding of the biopsychosocial underpinnings of CM transmission would allow to identify protective factors that could disrupt the intergenerational CM risk cycle. This study examined the consequences of maternal CM and the effects of psychosocial and biological resilience factors on child attachment and stress-regulatory development using a prospective trans-disciplinary approach.MethodsMother-child dyads participated shortly after parturition, after 3 months, (...) and 12 months later. Mothers’ CM experiences were assessed at t0, attachment representation at t1 and psychosocial risk and social support were assessed at t1 and t2. At t2, dyads participated in the Strange Situation Procedure. Children’s attachmen status were classified as organized vs. disorganized, including their level of disorganized behavior, and heart rate and respiratory sinus arrhythmia were recorded as stress response measures of the autonomic nervous system. Maternal caregiving during SSP was assessed using the AMBIANCE scale. Child’s single nucleotide polymorphisms rs2254298 within the oxytocin receptor and rs2740210 of the oxytocin gene were genotyped using DNA isolated from cord blood.ResultsMaternal CM experiences were significantly associated with an unresolved attachment status, higher perceived stress and more psychological symptoms. These negative effects of CM were attenuated by social support. As expected, maternal unresolved attachment and child disorganized attachment were significantly associated. Maternal caregiving did not mediate the relationship between maternal and child attachment but influenced children’s HR and RSA response and disorganized behavior. Moreover, the rs2254298 genotype of the OXTR gene moderated the stress response of children from mothers with CM. Children carrying the rs2740210 risk allele of the OXT gene showed more disorganized behavior independent from maternal CM experiences.ConclusionWe replicated and extended existing CM and attachment models by co-examining maternal attachment, social support, and child genetic susceptibility on child attachment and cardiovascular stress regulation. The findings contribute to an extended understanding of risk and resilience factors and enable professionals to target adequate services to parents and children at risk. (shrink)

Das Leib-Seele-Problem ist eine klassische Aufgabe des abendländischen Denkens, die bereits die antike Medizin und Philosophie und von früh an auch die Theologie beschäftigt hat. Dass ihm in der Gegenwart besondere Aufmerksamkeit zuteil wird, hängt einerseits mit den rasanten medizinischen und neurowissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen zusammen und andererseits mit den Konsequenzen, die Lösungsvorschläge für unser Selbstverständnis haben oder zu haben beanspruchen. Um welches Problem es sich handelt, läßt sich durch folgende Fragen umschreiben: Gibt es neben Körpern auch immaterielle Seelen, oder gibt es (...) ausschließlich physische Gegenstände, von denen einige mentale Eigenschaften besitzen? Lassen sich mentale Eigenschaften auf physische zurückführen? Und schließlich: Ist der Tod die Trennung der Seele vom Körper, das definitive Ende des ganzen Menschen oder nur das seiner jetzigen Daseinsgestalt? Der Band gibt auf diese Fragen kundige Antworten. The thus far little noticed element in Aristotle's definition of the soul – namely, its nexus to the particularities of a complex physical body (σῶμα φυσικόν / sôma physikon) – is the key to resolve three apparent inconsistencies of Aristotelian hylomorphism: First, the incompatible modalities of the assumed binding relation between physical body as a simultaneously functional matter and the soul as its form; second, the homonymy problem, i.e., that, according to Aristotle's own statement, a body’s remnant that was abandoned (...) by its soul can only homonymously be called that which it was when it was alive; third, the problem that form in hylomorphism seems to be nothing but a configuration of material parts, which, though conceptualised in abstraction and independent from matter, would nevertheless add nothing new to the material composition in which it is instantiated. If that were so, how, then, can a hylomorphic theory conceive of form as ontologically separate from matter? Without a comprehensive and comprehensible resolution of those three major aporias – that is in line with today’s scientific conception of the world – Aristotle’s definition of the soul as form-without-matter would, in Ackrill's words, ‘resist interpretation’. This paper shows that such a resolution can in fact be achieved and that Aristotle’s hylomorphism allows for a plausible and consistent interpretation. (shrink)

BackgroundFear of abandonment and aloneness play a key role in the clinical understanding interpersonal and attachment-specific problems in patients with borderline personality disorder and has been investigated in previous functional Magnet Resonance Imaging studies. The aim of the present study was to examine how different aspects of attachment representations are processed in BPD, by using for the first time an fMRI attachment paradigm including personalized core sentences from the participants’ own attachment stories. We hypothesized that BPD patients would show increased (...) functional involvement of limbic brain regions associated with fear and pain when presented personalized attachment relevant stimuli representing loneliness compared to healthy controls.MethodsWe examined the attachment classifications of 26 female BPD patients and 26 female HC using the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System. We used an fMRI-adapted attachment paradigm to investigate the neural correlates of attachment. All participants were presented three personalized sentences extracted from their AAP attachment narrative, combined with standardized AAP pictures representing being alone or in interactive attachment situations.ResultsAs expected, the classification of unresolved attachment was significantly greater in BPD compared to HC. BPD patients showed increased fMRI-activation in brain areas associated with fear, pain, and hyperarousal than HC when presented with personalized attachment-relevant alone stimuli. In particular, pictures with monadic attachment situations induced greater anterior medial cingulate cortex, anterior insula, amygdala, thalamus and superior temporal gyrus activation in the patient group.ConclusionThe results point to increased fMRI-activation in areas processing emotional distress and painful experiences in BPD patients. In particular, the emotional cascade reflecting attachment distress was evoked by combining monadic pictures, representing abandonment and aloneness, with the patients’ personalized narrative material. Our results confirmed and replicated previous results that illustrate once again the high relevance of aloneness and feelings of abandonment for BPD in the context of attachment trauma. Moreover, our results support the hypothesis of hypermentalization in response to attachment distress as a core feature of social-cognitive impairment in BPD associated with common treatment implications across different therapeutic orientations. Attachment is the way we relate to others. The way we attach to others is developed early in childhood, can be impaired by early traumatic life events, and is disturbed in many psychiatric disorders. Here we give a short overview about attachment patterns in psychiatric disorders with a focus on depression, and discuss two recent empirical studies of our own that have investigated attachment related brain activation using fMRI. In the first study with patients with borderline personality disorder we used (...) a paradigm in which patients produced narratives in response to attachment pictures and measured brain activity while participants were talking. Our results are consistent with the view that BPD pathology might be correlated with traumatic attachment fear related to autobiographic abuse and loss experiences. In the second study we investigated patients with major depression undergoing therapy in a longitudinal design. In this study we used a design with individualized stimuli that were extracted from narratives produced outside of the scanner. We found that patients, as compared to healthy controls, showed differences in a pre-post comparison. The significant correlation of changes in the subgenual cingulate and medial prefrontal cortex with symptom improvement provides evidence that these regions are involved in mediating therapy related effects. Personalität ist gleichsam das Zentralgestirn, das die anderen Gegenstände seines Philosophierens nicht nur beleuchtet, sondern wie Planeten zu einem wohlgeordneten System verbindet. Ein solches Gravitationszentrum der Philosophie Schellings und seine systembildenden Kräfte erstmals genau zu erkunden, ist die Leistung des Bandes, an dem sich eine Reihe von renommierten Schellingforschern beteiligt hat. Die Aufsätze werden durch weitere Klärung verschaffende und im Band dokumentierte Diskussionen zwischen den Autoren vielfach aufeinander (...) bezogen, sodaß sich ein eindrucksvolles Gesamtbild dessen ergibt, was die Schellingsche Philosophie im Innersten zusammenhält. Für die gegenwartsphilosophischen und gegenwartstheologischen Bemühungen, ein angemessenes Verständnis von menschlicher und göttlicher Personalität zu gewinnen, besitzt die Philosophie des reifen Schelling eine kaum zu überschätzende Bedeutung. Jedem drängt sich die massive, objektiv kaum zu bezweifelnde und sogar anschaulich gegebene Gewissheit ins Bewusstsein, einst geworden und daher nicht immer schon gewesen zu sein und einmal zu vergehen, das heißt nicht unbegrenzt weiterexistieren zu können. Dennoch gibt es in der gesamten Philosophie und Wissenschaftsgeschichte europäischer Prägung kaum eine andere dem Thema Werden und Vergehen in seiner ganzen Ausdehnung gewidmete Abhandlung, die diesen der Natur so tief eingewurzelten Sachverhalt einer philosophischen Analyse und wissenschaftlichen Beschreibung zugänglich macht. Das erste Buch (...) erörtert Gegebenheit und Begriff der unterschiedlichen Arten von Vorgängen ; das zweite Buch dagegen handelt von der Verursachung der Vorgangsart des Werdens und Vergehens und ihren Bedingungen. Aristoteles ist es gelungen, eine unter philosophischem Aspekt heute noch lehrreiche wissenschaftliche Erkundung, theoretische Beschreibung und ursächliche Erklärung des Werdens und Vergehens sowie seiner allgemeinen und speziellen Rahmenbedingungen vorzulegen, auch wenn in der konkreten Ausgestaltung das meiste davon auf völlig falschen Prämissen über die Natur des Universums beruht. Textgrundlage für die Übersetzung ist Harold H. Joachims zuerst 1922 erschienene Oxforder Standardausgabe des griechischen Textes. Die Textgestalt im einzelnen wurde durchgehend verglichen mit der rezenten Ausgabe des griechischen Textes von Marwan Rashed und war vor diesem Hintergrund an vielen Stellen neu zu beurteilen, was in nicht wenigen Punkten zu stets kenntlich gemachten Abweichungen von Joachims Vorlage geführt hat. Die Übersetzung folgt nach Möglichkeit zeilengetreu ihrer griechischen Vorlage und versucht, die karge bis abweisende Sprachdiät des Originals nicht durch reichhaltigeren und geschliffenen Ausdruck im Deutschen auszugleichen, sondern vielmehr auch in der Übersetzungssprache spürbar zu halten. Auf diese Weise wird die Durchsichtigkeit von Struktur und Duktus des Gedankens weitgehend so wie im Griechischen bewahrt. Der Grund für die Bemühung um eine möglichst genaue Abbildung des Originals in einer anderen Sprache liegt darin, dass die deutsche Werkausgabe ohne den griechischen Text auskommen muss und dennoch eine wissenschaftlich zureichende Grundlage für die Interpretation des aristotelischen Gedankens bieten soll. Wünschenswert ist außerdem, dass Leser, die nicht genügend des Griechischen mächtig sind, nicht nur zuverlässig über den Sinn des Originals orientiert, sondern instand gesetzt werden, auch an der weltweit ausgedehnten Forschungsdiskussion mit gewisser Urteilsfähigkeit teilzunehmen. Da in dieser Forschungsdiskussion über Aristoteles sehr oft die Berufung auf einzelne Begriffe oder bestimmte Wendungen eine wichtige Rolle spielt, sollte die Übersetzung nach Möglichkeit den tatsächlichen Wortbestand widerspiegeln, den der griechische Originaltext bietet. Ausgangspunkt zu den folgenden Überlegungen zur Bedeutung eines »Gefühls der Freiheit« bei Fichte war die bekannte Anfangspassage zu Schellings Freiheitsschrift, wo ein Gefühl dieser Art als Realitätsbasis einer begrifflichen Erörterung der Freiheit auftritt, aber nur untergründig für einen möglichen Begriff der Freiheit wirksam bleibt, um am Ende in die geklärte Selbstgewißheit der Freiheit verwandelt zu sein.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGEin Gutteil von Schellings Freiheitsschrift ist dem Problem der Theodizee gewidmet. Schelling setzt sich darin mit einigen Pfeilern des Leibnizschen Theodizeekonzepts auseinander, die bis heute als argumentativer Höhepunkt rationaler Theodizee angesehen werden. Aus einer berechtigten Kritik an Leibniz in drei Punkten entwickelt Schelling aber ein verbessertes Konzept, das auf der Idee eines geschichtlich mithandelnden Gottes fußt: Die von Schelling gegen Leibniz eingeforderte Positivität des Bösen macht die Möglichkeit des Bösen zum Definitionsmerkmal des höchsten durch eine Schöpfung realisierbaren Gutes, nämlich der (...) menschlichen Freiheit. Der Begriff der Möglichkeit überhaupt bedarf, um vollständig zu sein, nicht nur der Widerspruchsfreiheit ihres Inhalts, sondern auch der Kompatibilität dieses Inhalts relativ auf einen dafür vorauszusetzenden, sie vermögenden Träger. Gott als Träger ›böser Möglichkeit‹ ist auszuscheiden. Deshalb muss im Falle der Erschaffung irgendeiner Welt zuerst der geschaffene Mensch in seiner Freiheit existieren, bevor die ihn einschließende mögliche Welt in Beziehung auf die Realisierung der bösen oder aber guten Möglichkeiten bestimmt sein kann. Die Leibnizsche Voraussetzung einer Wahl Gottes zwischen vielen möglichen Welten, deren beste als conditio sine qua non dennoch das Böse enthält, als Begründung von dessen Freiheit muss daher von Schelling zurückgewiesen werden. Denn angesichts der Güte und Allmacht seines eigenen Wesens kann Gott nur eine einzige mögliche und zugleich maximal gute Welt zur Erschaffung offenstehen: das »System der Freiheit« in Gemeinschaft mit den Menschen. Gott erschafft diese einzig mögliche Welt aus freien Stücken genau dann, wenn er sich zugleich für fähig und willens erkennt, alle vorausgesehenen Folgen einer freien Entscheidung des Menschen zum Bösen durch sein eigenes geschichtliches Mithandeln wieder zum Guten zu wenden.SUMMARYIn his Freiheitsschrift, Schelling discusses some of the main arguments of the Leibnizian conception of theodicy. These are considered even today as an argumentative summit of rational elucidation of the existence of evil in a world which supposedly could be only created by a God with good intentions. However, Schelling criticizes Leibniz legitimately on three points and develops a revised solution that is based on the idea of a God that freely co-acts within human history: Schelling demands against Leibniz that evil, should it exist at all, be a positive reality and not an expression of mere defect. This turns the possibility of evil into one of the defining characteristics of the highest good that a creation might bring into being: human freedom. In order to be complete, the concept of possibility in general requires not only the absence of contradiction in its content, but also that this content be compatible with some already existent bearer which at least in principle would be capable of its realization. But God as creator of every being except of himself is necessarily incompatible with ‘evil possibility’. So it is impossible that some evil in whatever possible world would be real by a divine election. Therefore, in any case of a creation of some world, the created human being must first exist in freedom before the possible world that includes him can be determined regarding the realization of evil possibilities or, in contrast, of those that avoid evil. As a consequence, Schelling rejects Leibniz's idea of a divine choice between many possible worlds as justification of God's freedom and election of the best one which would unavoidably include, as a conditio sine qua non, the realization of some evil. Instead, there is with respect to his own moral excellence only one possible and at the same time wholly perfect world open to God's creativity: the “system of freedom”. Conscious of his own goodness and omnipotence, God creates this single possible world out of freedom if and only if he recognizes himself as willing and able to turn around, by his own co-action in history, all foreseen consequences of a free human choice of evil. ZusammenfassungVom Konzept ›Menschenwürde‹ machte die ethisch geprägte Philosophie Robert Spaemanns weniger und vorsichtiger Gebrauch, als man – angesichts der Positionen, die sie verteidigen möchte – vermuten würde. Dies liegt vor allem an einem in den Begriff einmontierten und von Spaemann in einer Abhandlung von 1987 hervorgehobenen »Trugschluss«, den auszuräumen der von ihm anschließend in mehreren Büchern entwickelte Personenbegriff dienen soll. Der Trugschluss verbindet und begründet auf der einen Seite die Würde mit der Kompetenz personaler Selbstbestimmung, auf der anderen Seite möchte (...) er allen und nur den Mitgliedern der menschlichen Spezies die Menschenwürde zubilligen. Doch handelt es sich hier – ohne starke metaphysische Hintergrundannahmen – um eine metabasis eis allo genos, da ein natürlicher Sortalbegriff mit dem Vernunftkonzept ›Person‹ mir nichts dir nichts identifiziert werden müsste – was aber insbesondere die zeitgenössisch führende analytische Philosophie mit recht kritisierte. Im Aufsatz wird gezeigt, wie Spaemanns Philosophie diesen Trugschluss durch sein neues Verständnis dessen, was Personen eigentlich sind, tatsächlich zur Auflösung zu bringen vermag. Zugleich wird deutlich gemacht, dass Spaemann auch in diesem Verständnis noch an gewissen, unter dem Verdacht religiöser Parteilichkeit stehende Auffassungen festhält – von denen aber auch vollkommen abgesehen werden kann, ohne den Kern von Spaemanns Verständnis der Person aufgeben zu müssen. Deben distinguirse tres condiciones para la libertad humana: la realidad de la actividad de vivir de los individuos; la relevancia causal de los estados mentales; y, un irreductible aspecto subjetivo en vivir las cosas. Estas condiciones proveen una manera de describir la relación entre el cuerpo y el alma, tal que las condiciones se cumplen: primero, la realidad de la actividad implícitamente asume la identidad sustancial del cuerpo y el alma en cada actividad individual que existe como cuerpo. Segundo, existen, (...) sin embargo, diferencias formales fundamentales entre los estados mentales y los estados físicos de tales cuerpos, de manera que la dualidad de los estados poseídos por un individuo viviente tienen que ser reconocidos junto con la identidad sustancial de su cuerpo y alma. De ahí que la relevancia causal de los estados mentales para la ocurrencia de ciertas acciones pueda actuar como la marca peculiar de la libertad. Finalmente, la distinción entre la existencia objetivamente reconocible de estados y la posesión subjetiva de los mismos es la razón de que ciertas acciones no sean deducidas del conocimiento objetivo de la realidad, por muy completos que sean. Este argumento muestra que las acciones no pueden verse como la consecuencia lógica de los estados precedentes del mundo, aún si las acciones en cuestión fueron determinadas causal y completamente. Tal visión de las acciones es, no obstante, la justificación estándar de que la libertad sea incompatible con el determinismo. (shrink)
