Abstract

In the other chapters, the information an observer gets from a stimulus is a numerical variable. The models in this chapter allow only a finite number of states, usually just two. The signal-detection model is developed for this limited-information situation, and measures of sensitivity and bias described. Particularly important is the high-threshold model in which the observer can only detect a signal or not.
