Abstract

This chapter consists of three sections. Section I explores the elite nature of modern-day fact-finding and the complex power dynamics and hierarchies with which it is entwined. Section Two analyzes the potential for a better balance between local and internationally driven fact-finding, including the potential role of capacity building as a means of democratizing the production of human rights knowledge. Section III concludes the chapter with some reflections on the potential to begin to break from some of the more problematic dimensions of modern-day fact-finding, including the possibility of greater diversity in strategies for change by human rights NGOs.
