Abstract
Human dignity holds a key place in the Spanish legal system. The Constitution considers it as ‘the basis of public order and social peace’ and it is at the heart of all the rules and regulations of law, including biomedicine. As the cornerstone of our legal system, its role is to protect the individual in any intervention that affects him/her. Hence, human dignity is also the backbone of the right to healthcare. Despite the undisputed progress in biomedicine, there is a potential danger of commodifying the human being. This is why dignity should serve to protect the rights of individuals, particularly, the most vulnerable people.
