Abstract

/// The theme of peace is, from the beginning of philosophy, one of the major problems for humankind, as can be seen from the unending series of writings which give witness to an heuristic of fear and hope. Tlie present article intends to analyse how some of the most important writings of the modern age, dedicated to the causes of war and the ways leading to universal peace, have established a deep connection between such ideas and the unavoidable need of both the European Union and an inclination toward a broader Union of peoples and nations. Those writings, due to their enlightened analysis, which starts with the virtualities of sociability and the cosmopolitan aptitude of human beings, of the possibilities of the federalism present in the European consciousness, underline the axial principles and the theoretical instruments adequate to such an end, reason why they can be counted among the genealogical references of some of the most recent texts within the field of contemporary political philosophy.
