Literature as a source for researching everyday life of Kyiv citizens in the second half of the XIX – at the beginning of the XX centuries

Abstract

The article is analyzing the place of music in everyday life of different layers of Kyiviets in the second half of the XIX – at the beginning of the XX centuries on the examples of fragments of works of the Ukrainian literature «Kaydasheva family», «Kievskiye prosytely», «Evening on the Volodymyr hill» by Ivan Nechui- Levytsky, «Za dvoma zaitsiamy» by Myhailo Starytskiy, «Holosni struny» by Lesya Ukrainka. It is explored the level of musical education of the intelligentsia, its playing on the musical instruments, the repertoire of songs, the attitude to music and musical tastes, the musical parties, the fashion to the concerts in the garden of Merchant Assembly. It is examined the episodes from the life of the Kyiv’s workers and former peasants, who came to work to Kyiv, their evening festivities in the center and the singing, their ability to listen from a distance the concerts in the garden of Merchant Assembly. It is described the perception of music on the city guests - the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’s church singing impact on the newcomer pilgrims. It is analyzed the place of music in the life of poor Kyiviets. It is determined the features of the use of Ukrainian literature as a historical source and a degree of coverage of the issue in the scientific publications. It is paid the attention to the feasibility of using the obtained results on the New History of Ukraine lessons.
