Abstract

The importance of using the periodical press as a historical source on the example of the Kiev newspaper «Life and Art» is researching in the article. It is paid the attention to the prospects of using the newspaper to the study of musical life of the city at the end of the XIX century on the example of such an important aspect of a musical education. It have been characterized the value of the urban environment for the development of art, for the consolidation of creative and intellectual potential of the country’s population, and emphasized the role of art education in the intellectual life. It is examined the one of the most important components of the then arts education ­ music literacy, which included the ability to play on the musical instrument, singing, familiarity with musical theory, awareness with news of world and national musical life. It is characterized the historical context in which the development of the musical education of the city was passing. It is drawn the attention to the importance of the music literacy of educated residents of the city and the demand that arised in connection with this to musical education. It is studied that most of the advertisements in the newspaper «Life and Art» were dedicated to a secular musical education, while the advertisements about the Orthodox church music were very rare. It is analyzed the content of 16 issues of the newspaper «Life and Art» and set the aspects of musical education, which it covered: the information about musical schools, musical colleges, musical courses, private musical lessons; the prices for training and teaching subjects; the teaching staff of the musical schools, and concerts, which were initiated by musical schools and colleges. It is studied the announcements of musical institutions about the conditions of entering and training. It is analyzed the information of the advertisements about private musical lessons, the number of which in the newspaper is quite considerably. It is characterized the place of musical institutions in the musical and concert life of Kyiv at the end of the XIX century. It is paid the attention to the prospects of the use of materials of the newspaper «Life and Art» for the study the relationships of Kyiviets to the musical education, the musicians and teachers, the character of the relationships of musical and teaching environment.
