Abstract

This book attempts to provide us with a general account of Hume's philosophy. Thus it concentrates as much on his theory of the passions and his moral philosophy as it does on his epistemology and philosophy of religion. In this respect it somewhat resembles Penelhums's Hume. And like the latter work within the limits of what it sets out to accomplish it performs its task very well. The authors are especially good at diagramming some of the more complicated Humean distinctions like the one between impressions and ideas and within the category of impressions themselves the one between primary and secondary impressions. As a result, anyone trying to form a clear picture in his mind of the exact nature of these distinctions would do well to consult this book.
