Abstract

O presente artigo analisa o livro Imposturas intelectuais, de Alan Sokal e JeanBricmont, procurando mostrar como os referidos autores, queprotagonizaram uma grande polêmica sobre o uso da ciência em elaboraçõesfilosóficas e sociológicas, revelam ter uma visão bastante frágil sobre oconhecimento científico. Colocando-se no campo de batalha onde se situam os próprios autores, o artigo recolhe exemplos na história das ciências que contestam as proposições epistemológicas de Sokal e Bricmont, além de levantar questionamentos sobre a solidez de sua crítica. Embora concordando com alguns aspectos da crítica dos autores e posicionando-se claramente contra o irracionalismo de certas correntes intelectuais, este artigo revela que o fundamento em que se assentam os comentários de Sokal e Bricmont são fracos e carecem de maior sustentabilidade.This article analyses the book Fashionable nonsense, by Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont, trying to show how these authors, which were protagonists of a great controversy about the use of the science in philosophical and sociological works, reveal a very weak conception about scientific knowledge. Placing itself in the battlefield of theses authors, this article collects examples from the history of the sciences that refute the epistemological propositions of Sokal and Bricmont, as well as raising questions about the consistency of their criticisms. While agreeing with several aspects of their criticisms, and at the same time, positioning itself against the irrationalism of certain current intellectual tendencies, this article maintains that the foundation upon which Sokal and Bricmont base their comments was weak and requires greater sustentation.
