Abstract
Jesus, the main protagonist in Matt., is portrayed through a series of correspondences and oppositions with David, Herod and Archelaus, the other royal characters. With a narrative approach the study of the characterization of these figures emphasizes the political aspects of the first two chapters of Matt. Furthermore, the ironic reversals of the beginning of the Gospel prepare readers to discover a kingdom radically different from that of Herod and a messiah, sons of David, “with a difference.” Thus, Matt. 1-2 is the prelude to the final reversal of this literary work : the messiah crucified by the Jerusalem authorities will be risen by God.
