Abstract

Los matemáticos de la escuela francesa, establecida entre finales del siglo XIX y los inicios del XX, no fueron indiferentes a las discusiones filosóficas respecto al problema de existencia en matemáticas. Los integrantes de esta escuela, encabezada por Borel, Baire y Lebesgue, se pronunciaron en contra del uso del axioma de elección en matemáticas. En este artículo se presentan algunos apartes de esta discusión en el marco de la jerarquía de funciones establecidas por Baire y su correlación con las categorías existenciales establecidas por el matemático ruso Nicolás Lusin.Mathematicians of the French school, settled down between the end of XIX and the beginnings of XX century, were not indifferent to the philosophical discussions about the problem of existence in mathematics. The members of this school, led by Borel, Baire and Lebesgue, spoke against the use of the axiom of choice in mathematics. This article presents some sections of this discussion within the hierarchy of functions established by Baire and its correlation with the existential categories set by the Russian mathematician Nicolas Lusin.
