Abstract

/// This essay is based on the acknowledgement of the permanently exemplar value of the sacred oratory of Fr. António Vieira. both as comunication and as language. As a homage article in the third centenary of his death, a hermeneutical reading of the "Sexagesima Sermon" from a particular theoretical perspective is proposed: that of O. Ducrot's linguistic and semantic theory, more specifically, the argumentative concept of discourse. In an attempt to read and interpret Vieira's text from the particular and limited perspective of meaning argumentative theory, a double purpose is aimed: firstly, to test the fertility of the adopted theory; secondly, to contribute, although modestly, to the actual understanding both of the lasting sense of the remarkable "Sexagesima Sermon", and of the thought of its brillant Preacher.
