  1. Digital Blackface and Its Argumentative Implications.Tempest M. Henning - forthcoming - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice:1-20.
While much has been written regarding the harms of Digital Blackface, within this paper I argue that Digital Blackface is harmful on an argumentative level, as opposed to merely socio-political. My position is that the usage of Black GIFs/memes should be curtailed by non-Black and non-users of African American Argumentation (AAA). Rather than offering socio-political reasons members of these groups ought not to use Digital Blackface, I utilize the Pragma-Dialectical model of argumentation. My argument hinges on Black GIFs/memes utilized by (...)

  2. Intergenerational Distributive (Climate) Justice.Anja Karnein - forthcoming - Res Publica:1-12.
In this paper I formulate three objections to Axel Gosseries’s account of what we owe to future generations when it comes to addressing problems related to climate change. First, I challenge Gosseries’s use of the term justice, quite generally, to apply to both human-induced as well as to natural, that is, non-human-induced, detrimental effects. I argue that this liberal use of the term justice constructs a view that implausibly lacks reference to human agency. Second, I challenge the way Gosseries applies (...)

  3. Committing to Parenthood.Nicholas Hadsell - 2025 - Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy 29 (2).
How do adults acquire the moral right to rear a child? In Luara Ferracioli’s new Parenting and the Goods of Childhood, she argues that adults acquire this right when they morally commit to a child. In this note, I’ll critically evaluate Ferracioli’s account. I’ll first describe the moral commitment view in further detail. After this, I’ll argue that it suffers from what I call the Swooping Problem. Contrary to Ferracioli’s defenses, her view permits adults to swoop in and acquire a (...)

  4. Gratitude for What We Are Owed.Aaron Segal - 2025 - Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy 29 (2).
Many philosophers hold that we never owe others gratitude in return for their treating us in ways that we are owed. Instead, we owe others gratitude only for treating us in ways that go above and beyond the demands of morality. In this paper, I argue that this view is mistaken: we sometimes owe others gratitude for treating us in ways that we are owed. In particular, I argue that some moral duties require us to act in ways that express (...)

  5. Enclaves for the Excluded.Jamie Draper - 2025 - Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy 29 (2).
This paper investigates the claim that immigrants have a moral duty to integrate. I argue that socially excluded immigrant minorities have a moral permission to form enclaves, which means that they have at most only limited duties to integrate. Positively, I argue that enclaves can play an important role in supporting the self-respect of socially excluded immigrants. Negatively, I argue social exclusion makes the putative duty to integrate—when it conflicts with enclave formation—unreasonably burdensome. I also argue that even if integration (...)

  6. Crime, Public Health, and Inhumane Objectivity.Nadine Elzein - 2025 - Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy 29 (2).
The suggestion that crime be treated as a public health problem instead of being treated retributively provokes unease for two reasons. Firstly, it is thought to foster impersonal treatment, which is “objectifying” or “dehumanizing.” I argue that practices are problematically impersonal when they bypass or undermine an agent’s ability to take responsibility. However, there is a difference between taken responsibility and retributive responsibility. Skepticism about the latter does not entail skepticism about the former. Skeptics about retributive desert still have strong (...)

  7. Voting, Representation, and Institution.Ben Saunders - 2025 - Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy 29 (2).
Kevin J. Elliott has recently defended an institutional duty to vote. This duty is based on (i) the role obligation of citizens to do what is necessary for well-functioning representative institutions and (ii) the claim that universal voting is ordinarily necessary for fair representation. This critical response takes issue with the second of these claims. I argue that neither the informational nor motivational problems that Elliott identifies require universal voting. Representatives have other ways of identifying citizens’ wants and interests and (...)

  8. BEE JP1: Innovation curse and the wastefulness of technologies believed to mitigate climate change.Minh-Hoang Nguyen & Thi Mai Anh Tran - 2025 - Sm3D Portal.
Inspired by the philosophical ideas in the “Innovation” story of Wild Wise Weird, this commentary aims to examine the innovation curse-a cycle of wasteful technological innovations in the environmental sector. Through the lens of informational entropy and value formation, it also advocates for a shift toward nature-based solutions and integrating Indigenous knowledge in addressing climate change impacts.

  9. Abhorrent Slurs and Laudable Pejoratives: an Estonian Case Study of the Space Between.Alex Stewart Davies, Fred Gregor Rahuoja & Nikolai Shurakov - forthcoming - Topoi.
Some pejoratives are slurs—they target people on the basis of protected characteristics. Other pejoratives are what we can call “cognitive-behavioural pejoratives”: they target contemptible conduct or character, not protected characteristics. These two classes of pejoratives are semantically similar, yet the ethical profiles of their use are radically different. There is an Estonian pejorative that targets people on the basis of a mixture of ethnicity (approximately: Russian) and a cognitive-behavioural trait (approximately: chauvinism). What is the ethical status of the use of (...)

  10. Doing Away with Skepticism about Harm.Anna Folland - forthcoming - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice:1-18.
The concept of harm plays a central role in many philosophical discussions. There are numerous ethical theories, claims, and arguments that appeal to the concept of harm. However, some philosophers think that the concept of harm is not fit to play this role in philosophical theorizing. Bradley (2012) argues that the concept is problematic to such an extent that we should do away with it. Bradley is not the only philosopher who doubts this concept’s usefulness, although others make more modest (...)

  13. An Interpersonal Form of Faith.Yuan Tian - forthcoming - Philosophy and Phenomenological Research.
An athlete has faith in her unathletic partner to run a marathon, a teacher has faith in her currently poor-performing students to improve in the future, and your friend has faith in you to succeed in the difficult project that you have been pursuing, even, and especially, when your chance of failing is non-trivial. This paper develops and defends a relational view of interpersonal faith by considering four interesting phenomena: first, in virtue of placing faith in someone, we stand in (...)

  14. Moralism as a Pathology of Public Discourse: A Realist Assessment.Carlo Burelli & Chiara Destri - forthcoming - Topoi:1-12.
This paper aims to offer a critique of a rigidly moralistic temperament in public discourse from the perspective of political realism. It unpacks three types of moralism in public discourse, and for each, it explains why it is normatively problematic from a realist perspective: ‘Moralist Causalism’ is the belief that moral preaching is an apt way to affect the world for the better; ‘Moralist Manicheism’ is a dichotomous division of the world between good and evil; ‘Moralist Absolutism’ is the conviction (...)

  16. Breaking Up Rationally.Daniel Villiger & Bouke de Vries - forthcoming - The Journal of Ethics:1-22.
The end of a long-term romantic relationship ranks among the most stressful and momentous events in life. Thus, the decision of whether to break up with someone whom one has been with for many years should generally be made very carefully. Unfortunately, decision theory is often thought to be unable to provide rational guidance in such high-stake life choices due to the outcomes’ presumed transformative character. The present paper shows how agents can rationally decide whether to leave their romantic partner (...)

  17. Harm, Insignificant Effects, and the Morality of Procreation.Felix Pinkert - forthcoming - The Journal of Ethics:1-13.
Several authors have argued that we ought to have fewer children in order to reduce our contribution to climate change. Proponents of this view generally hold a moderate version of the view, according to which it is still permissible to have one or two children per couple. One recent exception is Chad Vance’s paper “Procreation is Immoral on Environmental Grounds” in this journal, in which he argues that procreation is always, or almost always, morally impermissible. I argue, first, that Vance (...)

  20. How Are Ideologies False? A Reconstruction of the Marxian Concept.Brian Leiter - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):223-240.
For Karl Marx, ideological forms of consciousness are false, but how and in what respects? Ideologies must include some beliefs in order to be false, even if not all the beliefs that are inferentially related in the ideology are false, and even if there are (causally) related attitudes in the ideology that are neither true nor false. “Ideological” beliefs, however, are not simply false; their falsity has the specific property of not being in the interests of the agents who accept (...)

  21. The Demand and Supply of False Consciousness.Brian Kogelmann - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):203-222.
Why do oppressive social and political systems persist for as long as they do? Critical theorists posit that the oppressed are in the grip of ideology or false consciousness, leading them voluntarily to accept their servitude. An objection to this explanation points out that we have no account of how the ruling class’s ideology comes to dominate. One common reply says that the ruling class’s ideology comes to dominate because they control major organizations such as schools, churches, and news agencies. (...)

  22. Ideology.David Schmidtz - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):1-12.
What is the difference between a philosophy and an ideology? Would simply observing some aspect of human experience count as ideology? No. But suppose we try to explain and interpret what we have seen. Now, we enter the neighborhood of what gets called ideology. What else does it take to sort out what should be called ideological? And why would a worldview sometimes turn into an echo chamber, a cocoon of confirmation bias that fosters false consciousness?

  23. Ideological Self-Consciousness: Judith Shklar on Legalism, Liberalism, and the Purposes of Political Theory.Edward Hall - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):105-125.
Judith Shklar once remarked that the mere presence of ideology is not objectionable but that pretended immunity to ideology is. I scrutinize this suggestion and Shklar’s subsequent view that social theorists should acknowledge that their ideological impulses influence both their methods of study and the questions they pursue. I begin by focusing on the different ways that Shklar characterizes ideology before turning to her critique of legalism. I then chart various ways that Shklar’s call for ideologically self-aware political theorizing feeds (...)

  24. How Not to Be a Realist: The Case of Contest-Fetishism.Colin Bird - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):181-202.
One reason why the recently influential “realist” turn in political theory rejects mainstream theoretical approaches is that it views their moralistic orientation as a source of ideological credulity. Like Karl Marx before them, realists complain that “moralizing” social criticism is bound to be imprisoned in the illusions of the epoch. This essay suggests that contemporary political realism may itself invite comparable accusations of ideological complicity insofar as it equates politics and agonistic contestation, as many realists in fact do. The assumption (...)

  25. Hate Crime Legislation as an Antidote to Hate Ideology.Christopher Heath Wellman - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):256-273.
Given the prevalence of hate ideology, a concerted, multipronged effort to combat it clearly seems in order. In this essay, I explore whether hate crime legislation is a permissible and advisable component of this effort. In particular, I consider whether it is morally permissible to impose enhanced punishments upon criminals who select their victims at least in part because of an animus toward members of the group to which the victim belongs. Would it be permissible to punish more severely a (...)

  26. Against Realist Ideology Critique.Matt Sleat - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):139-157.
Is it possible to do ideology critique without morality? In recent years a small group of theorists has attempted to develop such an account and, in doing so, makes claim to a certain sort of “radical realism” distinguished by the ambition to ground political judgments and prescriptions in nonmoral values, principles, or concepts. This essay presents a twofold critique of this realist ideology critique (RIC) by first offering an internal critique of the approach and then arguing that the very attempt (...)

  27. The Cognitive Complexity of Ideologies and the Ambitious Aspirations of Ideologists.Jonathan Bendor - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):84-104.
Some ideologies, such as liberalism, conservatism, and socialism, are complex symbolic structures. Mastering them requires specialization, and because we are all amateurs in almost all symbolically rich domains, most people are not ideologically sophisticated. Instead, they reason about politics in a maturationally natural way, via friend-foe representations and inferences based on those representations (for example, friends of foes are foes). However, even complex ideologies are much simpler than the political, economic, and social systems that they are supposed to represent. Hence, (...)

  28. Theories of Ideology: Origins, Development, and Prospects.Allen Buchanan & Elizabeth Levinson - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):13-43.
This essay provides a comprehensive and critical introduction to ideology. It traces the origins and development of various conceptions of ideology, articulating both what they have in common and their differences. Among the distinctions that we develop are the contrasts between pejorative and nonpejorative conceptions, functionalist and causal conceptions, and conceptions that limit ideologies to supporting existing oppressive orders and those that allow for ideologies that challenge such orders. We also explain the role that ideologies can play in either preventing (...)

  29. The Explanatory Power of Ideology.Allen Buchanan - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):241-255.
This essay explores the range of phenomena that can be explained by application of a suitably broad but contentful concept of ideology. According to this concept, an ideology is an evaluative map of the social world, typically featuring an ingroup-outgroup distinction, at least in the case of political ideologies. This concept allows for ideologies that support the existing order and those that challenge it, including revolutionary ideologies. I refute the claim that the concept of ideology is not needed because “voluntary (...)

  30. The Insidious Ambiguity of “Ideology”.Molly Brigid McGrath - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):62-83.
This essay identifies and explores three dominant intellectual traditions that critique and theorize about ideology: Marxist, prudentialist, and social scientific. For these traditions, the word ‘ideology’ names interest-serving rationalizations, pseudoscientific totalitarian zealotry, or political outlooks. The blending of these three specialized meanings has generated a colloquial sense of ideology that is philosophically untenable and damaging to political discourse. According to this colloquial sense, all thinking is ideological and we are all ideologues. In response, I instead offer in this essay an (...)

  31. Social Science and Its Critics: An Ideological Analysis.Adrian Blau - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):158-180.
Why do many postpositivists caricature contemporary social science? Why make incorrect claims, for instance about social scientists avoiding values? Why discuss features that often no longer matter, such as seeking laws or predictions? Why reject extreme forms of social science without discussing more sensible forms? Why say little or nothing about scientific methodology, which is a great strength of recent social science? To explain such oversights and caricatures, philosophical analysis will not suffice. These are not isolated intellectual errors, but systematic (...)

  32. Ideational Structure.Aaron James - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (1):126-138.
This essay characterizes one way people are organized by their ideas about the ideas of others, namely, “ideational structure.” I clarify its role in social explanation, compare it to some standard social ontologies, and propose that it is an important element in an ideology.

Ideology can be understood as a type of cultural system, a set of interrelated meanings that are symbolically mediated through semiotic devices such as metaphors. Ideologies underlie social orders as well as help people make sense of their environment and decide on courses of action. While much has been said about ideology, little has been written on the sources of ideological change beyond pointing to ideological entrepreneurship. Even less has been written on the relationship between violent and disruptive social movements (...)

The discourse on Confucianism during the early Republican Era has predominantly revolved around debates among intellectuals and societal elites. This study shifts the focus to the grassroots reconstruction of Confucianism undertaken by Wang Fengyi, a peasant theorist, practitioner, and educator who played a pivotal role in the “the Way of the Virtuous” (shanrendao) movement in Northeastern China during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Wang was a staunch advocator for the education and literacy of peasant women, who occupied the (...)

  36. Can Bangladesh and India Transcend South Asia's Colonial Legacies?Kazi Huda - 2025 - The Daily Star.
Bangladesh is stepping into a new chapter, asserting its sovereignty and challenging decades of asymmetrical ties with India. This commentary discusses this transformative shift, exploring what it means for both nations and the broader South Asian region. This moment is more than political—it is about dignity, justice, and building relationships rooted in equality and mutual respect. For Bangladesh, it’s a call to strengthen unity and democracy. For India, it’s a chance to move from dominance to ethical leadership. Together, Bangladesh and (...)

  38. A Friend of Humanity: On Mercenaries, Mutants, and Morals.Zachary Vereb - 2024 - In Kevin S. Decker & Matthew Brake (eds.), The Witcher and Philosophy: Toss a Coin to Your Philosopher. Wiley.
In the Netflix series, Geralt of Rivia is portrayed, at first glance, as a stoic role model full of humility, courage, and trustworthiness. The chapter explores the contrast between Geralt's Kantian outlook and Yennefer's egoism. The Kantian view is the ideal philosophical frame to help us make sense of what a duty to be a friend of humanity means, even though Geralt himself has much to learn about becoming a true friend of humanity.

  40. Kantian Reflections on Conceptual Limits.Zachary Vereb - 2022 - Public Reason 14 (1):68-75.
This paper reflects on Kantian exchanges between A. W. Moore and Sorin Baiasu. After briefly situating their exchange, I highlight Baiasu’s clarification regarding Kant’s distinction between knowledge and cognition. Although convincing, I suggest that Baiasu’s objections could be strengthened with further discussion of the notion of a thing in itself as a limiting concept, as well as emphasis on Moore’s use of ‘concern’, which might require further clarification. I conclude with broader reflections on what is at stake: not just armchair (...)

  41. Scaffolded Agents, for Better or Worse: Assessing the Formative Aspect of Scaffolding.Mads J. Dengsø - forthcoming - Topoi:1-13.
Cognitive scaffolding is typically conceptualized in terms of environmental design which serves to offload, facilitate, or enhance the cognitive capacities of interacting agents. Recent contributions to the literature on scaffolding have noted that environmental design might likewise scaffold cognition in ways that undermine the interests of interactant agents—giving rise to notions of problematic or hostile scaffolding. Given the pervasiveness of social and technological scaffolding in contemporary life, the importance of understanding and assessing its effects can hardly be overstated. At the (...)

  42. Evaluative Injustice.Thomas Carnes - forthcoming - Journal of Value Inquiry.
This paper proposes the notion of evaluative injustice as a distinct kind of injustice. Evaluative injustice occurs when someone is evaluated with regard to whether one satisfies the ideal associated with a social role one occupies, and the evaluation is characterized by an unjust failure of appraisal respect. This kind of injustice is importantly distinct from other kinds of injustice recently theorized, in particular epistemic injustice (Fricker 2007) and ontological injustice (Jenkins 2023). It is distinct insofar as it is how (...)

  43. Meditations on Ortega y Gasset’s Opaque Dogs: Hunting with Dogs as Inter-Species Affective Scaffolding.Jean du Toit & Gregory Morgan Swer - forthcoming - Topoi:1-15.
This paper interprets Ortega y Gasset’s Meditations on Hunting (1972) through the concept of cognitive scaffolding in order to analyse the relationship between hunter and hunting dog as a form of inter-species distributed cognitive system. In recreational hunting, the hunter and the dog engage in a reciprocal process of mutual cognitive scaffolding that transforms both their capacities. It is further argued that this scaffolding also serves as a means of affective regulation, and that it is the affective rather than the (...)

  44. Africa Dreams of Artificial Intelligence.Helen Titilola Olojede & Felix Kayode Olakulehin - 2024 - Journal of Ethics in Higher Education 5:159-181.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has recently emerged as a transformative force in teaching and learning practices, with profound implications for open and distance learning (ODL), which relies heavily on technology. Despite its global impact, the extent of African societies’ engagement with AI remains trivial. This paper critically reflects on the ethical, legal, social, pedagogical and technological implications of AI in ODL in sub-Saharan Africa, drawing insights from the Nigerian experience. Adopting the scoping review methodology, the paper explores and synthesises existing literature (...)

In general, our concepts take shape by way of contrast. Geoffrey Lloyd commented almost 60 years ago on “the remarkable prevalence of theories based on opposition in so many societies at different stages of technological development,” and he illustrated in detail the tendency of the ancient Greeks to think in binary pairs. One fundamental distinction, found in a wide variety of cultures, is that between human beings and other animals, or, more simply, between humans and animals, which serves to identify, (...)

This book provides a comprehensive study of major issues of moral psychology throughout history, from ancient to early modern philosophy. The volume focuses primarily on the Western history of philosophy but also deals with Jewish and Islamic heritage. The Introduction chapter lays out the historical background in broad strokes, giving the reader the “lay of the land” when it comes to the terms of analysis and their overall development within the Western tradition of moral psychology. The book continues by studying (...)

HLA Hart tells us about how law would have emerged in a world of primary rules—informal, beneficial norms—by adjustments that the primary rules would naturally require; these adjustments would have introduced secondary rules for regulating the primary. But he does little to explain how the primary rules would themselves have emerged and, by most accounts, does not expand appropriately on the idea that the relevant players in his story would have taken an internal point of view, as he calls it, (...)
