En este trabajo nos referiremos al debate entre internismo y externismo epistemológicos a partir del episodio que constituye el debate entre Michael Williams y Alvin Goldman, que se expresa en el intercambio de trabajos presente en el volumen del año 2016 Goldman and his critics. Enmarcaremos esta discusión señalando que, mientras una serie de autores (en particular Laurence BonJour y, siguiendo su influencia, Jennifer Lackey y Fernando Broncano) extrae del debate internismo/externismo la consecuencia “dualista” de que el conocimiento no puede (...) analizarse según un único eje, sino que hallamos al menos dos -el de la razonabilidad subjetiva y el de la conductividad a la verdad-, Goldman se presenta como un externista de “línea dura” para el cual el internismo es simplemente insostenible y la justificación epistémica ha de comprenderse exclusivamente en términos confiabilistas. Sobre este trasfondo, analizaremos la propuesta de Williams, quien por un lado busca probar que las críticas de Goldman al internismo quedan restringidas a una versión “mentalista” o “subjetivista”, y, por el otro, busca ratificar una epistemología internista moderada apoyándose en el señalamiento de que el conocimiento humano es indisociable de consideraciones de responsabilidad (accountability). Buscaremos probar que la réplica de Goldman, que se centra en denunciar una presunta confusión por Williams entre el problema del “estar justificado” y el del “justificar”, no hace justicia a la amplitud del problema de la justificación epistémica, una vez que este es abordado, no a partir de presuntas “intuiciones” sobre el significado de “conocimiento” en el lenguaje ordinario, sino a partir de las prácticas en las que nociones como esta pueden hacerse funcionar. -/- . Vagueness is commonly presented as natural language imprecise meaning that is analyzed as borderline cases and formalized in various ways by ‘classical’ theories of vagueness. A different approach to vagueness is presented here, adopting Dascal’s notion of ‘soft rationality’ and interpreting it as the use of ‘similarity’ rather than ‘analysis’ for the understanding of natural language terms. Soft rationality is suggested as a theory of vagueness that remains within the realm of intensionality, rather than seeking a formalized extensional explanation to (...) vagueness. (shrink)

Sem a ambição de expor todas as aproximações e contradições entre o Discurso sobre a origem e os fundamentos da desigualdade entre os homens, de Jean Jacques Rousseau, e o Livro da Gênesis Bíblica, o presente texto tem por finalidade realizar um estudo comparativo entre essas duas obras, visando propor uma reflexão em torno do mito do jardim do Éden, assim como se encontra exposta tal história na Bíblia, em contraponto com a obra do iluminista Jean-Jacques, ressaltando os elementos de (...) identificação, a proposição do sujeito autônomo sem valer-se do princípio de autoridade além dos limites da racionalidade. Se Rousseau foi leitor assíduo da Bíblia, isso não significa a exigência de uma discussão sobre a fundamentação dogmática e transcendental quando se discute a tentativa de definição das origens do ser humano. Tal proposta desperta teses e argumentos em torno das afinidades e distanciamentos entre o estado de natureza e as origens bíblicas. Assim, pretende-se responder se Rousseau efetivamente propõe um ponto de vista racional/naturalista dos sentimentos cristãos, servindo-se do tema para estabelecer suas duras críticas à religião e suas práticas. El esfuerzo de relacionar la situación social, política, económica y cultural del inicio del siglo XXI desde ámbitos de una racionalidad intercultural con los valores que emanan del Evangelio lleva a cuestionarnos realidades muy duras de nuestra sociedad actual. Nuestro mundo muestra de una forma evidente que vive en una situación de hechos inde-seables. Así nace una rueda de guerras que anuncian la intención de ser la última de ellas para generar más tarde otra guerra. Y ningún ser humano puede (...) permanecer impasible ante esta situación. Este trabajo se centra en acudir a planteamientos de la interculturalidad a la luz del Evangelio, que ofrece el contenido de valores universalmente reconocidos. Es decir, abordar el análisis de la realidad sin planteamientos culturales hegemónicos que desprecie por in-significante cualquier planteamiento de otra cultura o sólo valorar otra cultura en la medida en que se ajusta a los patrones del etnocentrismo occidental. Lo que exige apostar por valores universales críticos con los poderosos que frecuentemente “aprisionan la verdad con la injusticia”. (shrink)

La formación (Bildung) del Espíritu Filosófico -tal como es desarrollada en el Prólogo a la Fenomenología-, constituye un llamado a asumir el esfuerzo del concepto. Esta tesis es desarrollada por el autor en dos etapas. En primer lugar, se plantea la exigencia de establecer una relación inmanente con el objeto, es decir, expresar la necesidad de su movimiento, pues para Hegel tanto el objeto de la filosofía como su concepto están estrechamente ligados a la vida; en esta primera parte, la (...) filosofia de Hegel constituye una dura crítica al formalismo kantiano. En segundo lugar, Hegel concibe la filosofia como trabajo -cuya experiencia fundamental es el extrañamiento (Entfremdung)-, el cual expresa la finitud propia de la racionalidad humana. A partir de esta última tesis Hegel emprende, por una parte, una critica del entusiasmo propio del movimiento romántico y, por otra parte, de la intuición como compresión inmediata de todo lo que es. Mi propósito es doble. Mostrar cómo la pregunta por el sentido de la vida y la matriz del sentimiento religioso del Tolstoi maduro, que él considera cristianismo verdadero, se funda en la experiencia subjetiva del miedo ante la muerte y la angustia ante la soledad que la misma comporta. Este aspecto es el núcleo de su religiosidad por cuanto de él se deriva el valor de la fraternidad, centro de una moral humanista y altruista paradójica que sacraliza el vínculo amoroso (...) entre los hombres a la par que se fundamenta en el sometimiento a la voluntad de Dios. Por otra parte, las concepciones de Tolstoi tal como se expresan no sólo en El Evangelio Abreviado, sino también en sus relatos literarios ayudaron al joven Wittgenstein de los años de guerra a darle forma a un sentimiento religioso acorde con el sentido que la presencia interiorizada de la muerte tenía para el literato ruso. Ahora bien, lo que respectivamente entienden por voluntad divina, a la que ambos dicen someterse, varía significativamente de uno a otro. Al cabo, mientras que Tolstoi sacraliza el amor fraterno, Wittgenstein enfatiza el dominio de sí y la salvación espiritual interior, cobrando una mayor importancia la dimensión privada del punto de vista religioso. In this article I argue that a high capacity for courage, in the sense of the strength of character that enables one to face distress, angst or psychological pain, is required of Hume’s ideal critics just as the other well-known five characteristics are. I also explore the implications of my proposal for several aspects of Hume’s aesthetics, including the one brought into relief by Shelley’s interpretation of Hume along the lines of distinguishing between the perceptual and affective stages in aesthetic (...) appreciation. El día 27 de febrero de 2013 se llevó a cabo en la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana el homenaje académico en honor de la vida y trayectoria intelectual del profesor Guillermo Hoyos Vásquez. Su reciente deceso, el 5 de enero de 2013, y sus contribuciones a la academia colombiana fueron las razones para que amigos, alumnos y compañeros de trabajo dedicaran toda una jornada a recordar las anécdotas y enseñanzas del profesor Hoyos. Como resultado de ese evento, la Vicerrectoría Académica y (...) la Vicerrectoría de Investigación de la Universidad Javeriana se han unido en este proyecto editorial que recoge las intervenciones que se realizaron en este homenaje, con el fin de llevar a un público más amplio una de las vidas y obras intelectuales que han marcado a una generación de científicos sociales y filósofos colombianos. If we want to define today's society in one word, trying to capture its meaning, it would be polarization. The interdependence between all social segments, articulated by globalization, has a double function: unpacking the identitary elements that enter in the structure of society and framing them in a relational dynamic. In this situation are Theology and Science, which, of course, maintain a number of components under their general names. Can we talk about a congruence between these two dimensions of human (...) knowledge? Or they are developing completely separately and antagonistic in social progress? According to Ian G. Barbour there are four types of relation between Science and Religion: conflict, independence, dialogue, integration. This article intends to highlight the congruence between Theology and Science in the paradigm of neo-patristic synthesis, which explores in a phenomenological, theological and philosophical way the relationship between these two. Neo-patristic synthesis is a theological movement from the 20th century, generated by the initiative of the orthodox theologian G. Florovsky. (shrink)

Noël Carroll denies and Robert Stecker affirms that it is a necessary condition of aesthetic experience that it should be valued for its own sake. I make use of their controversy to argue for the psychological impossibility of discharging very common practices of art evaluation and analysis without undergoing an aesthetic experience valued for its own sake. By way of supporting my thesis and also making progress in Stecker and Carroll’s dispute about aesthetic experience, I analyse their methodological assumptions and (...) develop further our understanding of negative, indifferent and unexpected aesthetic experiences. Peter J. Lewis argued that the Everettian interpretation of quantum mechanics implies the unpopular halfer position in the Sleeping Beauty debate. We retorted that it is perfectly coherent to be an Everettian and an ordinary thirder. In a recent reply to our paper Lewis further clarifies the basis for his thinking. We think this brings out nicely where he goes wrong: he underestimates the importance of metaphysical considerations in determining rational credences.

Obesity is characterized by the accumulation of an excessive amount of fat mass in the adipose tissue, subcutaneous, or inside certain organs. The risk does not lie so much in the amount of fat accumulated as in its distribution. Abdominal obesity is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer, having an important role in the so-called metabolic syndrome. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent, detect, and appropriately treat obesity. The diagnosis is based on anthropometric indices that have (...) been associated with adiposity and its distribution. Indices themselves, or a combination of some of them, conform to a big picture with different values to establish risk. Anthropometric indices can be used for risk identification, intervention, or impact evaluation on nutritional status or health; therefore, they will be called anthropometric health indicators. We have found 17 AHIs that can be obtained or estimated from 3D human shapes, being a noninvasive alternative compared to X-ray-based systems, and more accessible than high-cost equipment. A literature review has been conducted to analyze the following information for each indicator: definition; main calculation or obtaining methods used; health aspects associated with the indicator ; criteria to classify the population by means of percentiles or cutoff points, and based on variables such as sex, age, ethnicity, or geographic area, and limitations. Since the publication of Elga's seminal paper in 2000, the Sleeping Beauty paradox has been the source of much discussion, particularly in this journal. Over the past few decades the Everettian interpretation of quantum mechanics 1 has also been much debated. There is an interesting connection between the way these two topics raise issues about subjective probability assignments.This connection is often alluded to, but as far as we know Peter J. Lewis's ‘Quantum Sleeping Beauty’ is the first attempt to examine (...) it explicitly. Lewis claims that the two debates are not independent: to be specific, he argues that accepting the Everettian interpretation of quantum mechanics requires you to be a ‘halfer’ about Sleeping Beauty, in opposition to the more widely accepted ‘thirder’ solution.This paper will argue that Lewis is wrong. Everettians do not have to be halfers. It is perfectly cogent to be both an Everettian and a thirder. (shrink)

Neuronal remodeling is a conserved mechanism that eliminates unwanted neurites and can include the loss of cell bodies. In these processes, a key role for glial cells in events from synaptic pruning to neuron elimination has been clearly identified in the last decades. Signals sent from dying neurons or neurites to be removed are received by appropriate glial cells. After receiving these signals, glial cells infiltrate degenerating sites and then, engulf and clear neuronal debris through phagocytic mechanisms. There are few (...) identified or proposed signals and receptors involved in neuron‐glia crosstalk, which induces the transformation of glial cells to phagocytes during neuronal remodeling in Drosophila. Many of these signaling pathways are conserved in mammals. Here, we particularly emphasize the role of Orion, a recently identified neuronal CX3C chemokine‐like secreted protein, which induces astrocyte infiltration and engulfment during mushroom body neuronal remodeling. Although, chemokine signaling was not described previously in insects we propose that chemokine‐like involvement in neuron/glial cell interaction is an evolutionarily ancient mechanism. (shrink)

Referees are essential participants in the sport of football. They are responsible for enforcing the rules and achieving the necessary impartiality for the matches. Referees are often target of hostile reactions from fans, players, and coaches. However, few studies have focused on these experiences and the strategies they use to manage them. In order to fill this gap, a qualitative interview-based study was developed to explore the experiences of a group of football referees on aggression, violence, and coping. A thematic (...) analysis was developed combining inductive and deductive processes. Results indicated that the most frequent aggressions experienced were verbal abuse. Most of the aggressions from spectators were of a sexist nature. When aggressions were considered normal by referees, symbolic violence emerged. Racist aggressions were directed to the two Moroccan participants. Problem and emotional-focused coping strategies were identified. The two most common referee responses to coaches’ and players’ verbal abuse were penalties and send-off calls. Smiling and not considering insults as a personal matter were two emotional-focused coping strategies used toward spectator aggressions. Implications for the referees’ job and well-being as well as the quality of football competitions were highlighted to reduce aggressions and violence and to help referees to cope with hostile behaviors. The neural correlates of software programming skills have been the target of an increasing number of studies in the past few years. Those studies focused on error-monitoring during software code inspection. Others have studied task-related cognitive load as measured by distinct neurophysiological measures. Most studies addressed only syntax errors. However, a recent functional MRI study suggested a pivotal role of the insula during error-monitoring when challenging deep-level analysis of code inspection was required. This raised the hypothesis that the insula is (...) causally involved in deep error-monitoring. To confirm this hypothesis, we carried out a new fMRI study where participants performed a deep source-code comprehension task that included error-monitoring to detect bugs in the code. The generality of our paradigm was enhanced by comparison with a variety of tasks related to text reading and bugless source-code understanding. Healthy adult programmers participated in this 3T fMRI experiment. The activation maps evoked by error-related events confirmed significant activations in the insula [p < 0.05]. Importantly, a posterior-to-anterior causality shift was observed concerning the role of the insula: in the absence of error, causal directions were mainly bottom-up, whereas, in their presence, the strong causal top-down effects from frontal regions, in particular, the anterior cingulate cortex was observed.
