This paper makes some additional points about matters discussed in my book „Aristoteles als Naturwissenschaftler“ (Aristotle as a Natural Scientist), Berlin 2014. Findings by the biologist A. M. Leroi, who published a book on Aristotle with a similar subject that same year („The Lagoon. How Aristotle invented science“), will be considered. It will be argued that the mayflies discovered by Aristotle in the Kuban River belong to the species Palingenia fuliginosa. Aristotle is more likely to have observed the life-history of (...) the catfish in the river Strymon in Northern Greece than in the Achelous river basin in Acarnania. He probably never set eyes on the catfish Silurus aristotelis, which is endemic to Acarnania and was discovered by Agassiz in 1857. (shrink)

Aristoteles hat seine Lehrschriften sicherlich sowohl als Vorlesungsmanuskripte für seine Schüler als auch für ein abstraktes Publikum und für die Nachwelt geschrieben. Denn wir finden sowohl Bezugnahmen auf seine Hörer als auch Bemerkungen, die einzelne seiner Thesen selbstbewusst im positiven Sinne mit der Leistung der Vorgänger vergleichen und in einen historischen Zusammenhang stellen, was nur sinnvoll ist, wenn der Vergleich von außen nachvollzogen warden konnte. Wieweit einzelne Schriften zu seinen Lebzeiten in Umlauf kamen, ist unbekannt.

Der Entwurf einer Biologie ist eine der erstaunlichsten Leistungen des Aristoteles. Offensichtlich ist er Teil eines umfassenden Konzepts, die gesamte Natur in ihrer Vielfalt und allen ihren Details zu erforschen und ihre Strukturen zu erklären. Wenn innerhalb dieses Entwurfs, der alle Bereiche am Himmel und auf Erden umfasst und etwa 50 % der erhaltenen Texte des Aristoteles ausmacht, die zoologischen allein ein Drittel einnehmen – eine kleinere botanische Schrift über die Pflanzen ist nicht erhalten ; in umfassender Weise bearbeitete die (...) Botanik Aristoteles’ Schüler Theophrast –, so hängt dies damit zusammen, dass in diesem Sektor der Natur durch Beobachtungen, Sektionen und Ursachenforschung die größten Ergebnisse zu erzielen waren. Bezogen auf das Gesamtkonzept hat also die Biologie bzw. die für Aristoteles im Vordergrund stehende Zoologie eine Pilotfunktion, die sie mit Einschränkungen auch in der Entwicklung der modernen Naturwissenschaft beibehalten hat. This article tries to disentangle different perspectives on nature in Aristotle's biological work. In one sense Aristotle speaks of nature as a craft-like factor in the generation of living beings. In another sense 'nature' refers to Aristotle's conception of an unchanging universe, in which the individual living beings are perishable, but reproduce themselves and thus guarantee that the essential blueprints of the different species (eidê) remain the same. In addition, however, Aristotle's zoology acknowledges natural processes that involve greater dynamics and (...) more exceptions, most notably when it comes to the allocation of available matter within the animals of a certain species or to the adaptation to a species' proper environment. In conclusion, it seems fair to say that in Aristotle's zoology different autonomous perspectives overlap, so that it would be inappropriate to reduce all of them to a common denominator. (shrink)

English summary: The focus by individual ancient (or modern) authors in various fields (law, philosophy, science, theology, literature) on how to use the concept of natural law led to biases that this volume wants to help overcome through a preview of the 'historical depth' of the concept. Its particular charm lies in the fact that its two components (Nature and Law) stand in strong tension with each other, which to the present day does not appear to be fully resolved. While (...) in the classical Greek philosophy of Plato and Aristotle the world is not reduced to an intentional act of creation, the introduction of the concept of natural law by the Stoics and its absorption by Christian writers develops the idea of a divine order underlying natural order. Its challenge by modern science has led to an unresolved uncertainty about ethical and social standards. German text. German description: Die Fokussierung auf die Verwendungsweise des Begriffs des Naturgesetzes bei einzelnen antiken (oder modernen) Autoren auf den unterschiedlichsten Gebieten (Jurisprudenz, Philosophie, Naturwissenschaft, Theologie, Literatur) fuehrte zu Einseitigkeiten, die dieser Band durch einen Ausblick auf die ehistorische Tiefe' des Begriffs ueberwinden hilft. Sein besonderer Reiz liegt darin, dass seine beiden Bestandteile (Natur und Gesetz) in einer starken Spannung zueinander stehen, die bis auf den heutigen Tag nicht voll aufgelost erscheint. This book argues that the main focus of the life and work of Aristotle was on the natural sciences. Of central importance are his scientific expeditions, which can be reconstructed from scattered geographical statements. Comparison with modern biology confirms the empirical nature of his biological writings, and the philological approach taken here offers a corrective against premature philosophical systematizing.

Objective: Gait adaptation to environmental challenges is fundamental for independent and safe community ambulation. The possibility of precisely studying gait modulation using standardized protocols of gait analysis closely resembling everyday life scenarios is still an unmet need.Methods: We have developed a fully-immersive virtual reality environment where subjects have to adjust their walking pattern to avoid collision with a virtual agent crossing their gait trajectory. We collected kinematic data of 12 healthy young subjects walking in real world and in the VR (...) environment, both with and without the VA perturbation. The VR environment closely resembled the RW scenario of the gait laboratory. To ensure standardization of the obstacle presentation the starting time speed and trajectory of the VA were defined using the kinematics of the participant as detected online during each walking trial.Results: We did not observe kinematic differences between walking in RW and VR/A-, suggesting that our VR environment per se might not induce significant changes in the locomotor pattern. When facing the VA all subjects consistently reduced stride length and velocity while increasing stride duration. Trunk inclination and mediolateral trajectory deviation also facilitated avoidance of the obstacle.Conclusions: This proof-of-concept study shows that our VR/A+ paradigm effectively induced a timely gait modulation in a standardized immersive and realistic scenario. This protocol could be a powerful research tool to study gait modulation and its derangements in relation to aging and clinical conditions. (shrink)
