Virtues abounding: St. Thomas Aquinas on the cardinal and related virtues for today.Mark O'Keefe - 2019 - Eugene, Oregon,: Cascade Books.
Living a morally good life today is a challenge. But we become fully and authentically human precisely by the decisions we make every day—some of them relatively simple, others complex and difficult. Once a choice is made, we still must claim the moral resolve and strength of character to implement it. Virtues are precisely the sustained habits that help us maneuver life’s many choices and to become the good people that we want to be. St. Thomas Aquinas offers the (...)

Scottish Philosophy of Rhetoric.Rosaleen Keefe - 2013 - Imprint Academic.
The popular and successful rhetorical textbooks produced by the 18th century Scottish philosophical tradition, such as George Campbell's The Philosophy of Rhetoric, Hugh Blair’s Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres, and Alexander Bain’s English Composition and Rhetoric have been widely accorded a role in the trajectories of 19th and 20th century literary theory. Scholars have generally overlooked them, however, as philosophical works. The selected writings chosen for this volume show how these rhetorical textbooks were a practical extension of the philosophy (...)

    J. F. Ferrier’s Institutes of Metaphysic.Jenny Keefe - 2014 - In W. J. Mander, The Oxford Handbook of British Philosophy in the Nineteenth Century. New York, NY: Oxford University Press.
James Frederick Ferrier was one of the first post-Hegelian British idealists, developing his idealism via a rejection of Thomas Reid’s common sense philosophy and from a reappraisal of Berkeley’s idealism. This chapter is a critical consideration of his major work, the Institutes of Metaphysic in which he develops a complete system of metaphysics. From an examination of the laws of knowledge and by applying the deductive method he determines that the absolute in cognition is an indivisible subject-object synthesis and (...)

Speaking about Weeds: Indigenous Elders’ Metaphors for Invasive Species and Their Management.Thomas Michael Bach & Brendon M. H. Larson - 2017 - Environmental Values 26 (5):561-581.
Our language and metaphors about environmental issues reflect and affect how we perceive and manage them. Discourse on invasive species is dominated by aggressive language of aliens and invasion, which contributes to the use of war-like metaphors to promote combative control. This language has been criticised for undermining scientific objectivity, misleading discourse, and restricting how invasive species are perceived and managed. Calls have been made for alternative metaphors that open up new management possibilities and reconnect with a deeper conservation ethic. (...)

The central positoin of St. Thomas Aquinas in the pantheon of Catholic thinkers along with St. Augustine of Hippo more than justifies ongoing attention to his thought and contributions to philosophy, theology, and medieval culture. This volume is an anthology of the passages of his Summa Theologia on human nature or the "human constitution.".

Anthropology is turning toward a new engagement with acentral question of Weber: how do people come to understand the distributionof fortune in the world? Our discipline’s recent examination ofthe uses of the past prompts us to ask how stances toward the future areboth the product of cultural logics and the target of institutional interests. In this article, I trace the engagement with contingency in anthropologyand social thought, and then compare the nonchalant stance toward thefuture found in Greek society with the different (...)

Frui essentia non fruendo persona. Die Lehre des Johannes Duns Scotus über die Trennbarkeit von Wesenheit und Personen in der Gottesschau und ihre Kritik bei Wilhelm von Ockham.Thomas Marschler - 2015 - Quaestio 15:665-673.
The paper argues that the doctrine of John Duns Scot concerning the possibility that one can enjoy the divine essence apart from the persons in the beatific vision, is a consequent application of important metaphysical principles on trinitarian theology. This judgment can be confirmed by taking into account William of Ockham’s rejection of the scotistic view.

Motion, Emotion, and Love: The Nature of Artistic Performance.Thomas Carson Mark - 2012 - Gia Publications.
Dynamically transforming the elements of any performing artist’s craft, this practical guide is a must-have for musicians, dancers, and actors. The handbook shows how artistic performance is embodied in the unification of three critical elements—motion, emotion, and love—demonstrating how it offers experiences and opportunities distinct from the nonperforming arts. Step-by-step guidelines are provided for building intentional and inspirational practice time, thereby enhancing the relationships between the source, the performer, and the audience. Illustrating how intentional movement invokes emotions from both the (...)

    Managing Health(-Care Systems) Using Information Health Technologies.Thomas Mathar - 2011 - Health Care Analysis 19 (2):180-191.
This study aims to compare and contrast how specific information health technologies (IHTs) have been debated, how they have proliferated, and what they have enabled in Germany’s and England’s healthcare systems. For this a discourse analysis was undertaken that specifically focussed on future-scenarios articulated in policy documents and strategy papers released by relevant actors from both healthcare systems. The study reveals that the way IHTs have been debated and how they have proliferated depends on country-specific regulatory structures, their respective values, (...)

A Father's Instructions: Consisting of Moral Tales, Fables, and Reflections.Thomas Percival - 2017 - Cambridge University Press.
A physician and medical reformer enthused by the scientific and cultural progress of the Enlightenment as it took hold in Britain, Thomas Percival wrote on many topics, including public health and demography. His volume on medical ethics is considered the first modern formulation, and it and several of his other works are reissued in this series. This short book of improving tales, first published in 1777, and revised and enlarged in 1779, was originally written for his own children, and, (...)

Virtue.Thomas M. Osborne - 2018 - In Thomas Williams, The Cambridge Companion to Medieval Ethics. New York: Cambridge University Press. pp. 150-171.
The essay on thirteenth-century ethics will trace the history of three major themes in moral philosophy and theology, namely the morality of individual acts, virtue, and happiness. Both Peter Lombard’s rejection of Abelard’s focus on intention and the Fourth Lateran Council’s remarks on confession caused thinkers such as William of Auvergne and Philip the Chancellor to develop a way of classifying acts and determining responsibility for such acts. Thomas Aquinas and clarified and changed the technical vocabulary but adopted much (...)
