구봉 송익필(1534-1599)은 조선 중기를 대표하는 성리학자요 예학자이다. 그는 율곡 이이, 우계 성혼 등과 도의지교를 맺었을 뿐만 아니라 그들과 필적할만한 학문적 능력을 갖추었던 인물이다. 그런데 구봉집에는 유교지식인들에게는 특이하게 비쳐질 수밖에 없는 도가적 사유의 스펙트럼을 통해 해석된 세계와 인간에 대한 다수의 시선들이 확인된다.BR 특히 구봉은 『장자』의 내편, 외편, 잡편의 전편에 걸쳐있는 주요 철학개념들을 자유롭게 원용하여 자신의 삶의 지평을 이상적으로 설계해보고자 한 특징이 확인된다. 그는 논문의 형식보다는 자유로운 형식의 문학 장르의 하나인 시의 양식을 통해 자신과 세계에 대한 내면적 심상을 피력하는 모습을 보여준다. 이는 (...) 장자가 성리학이나 예학의 범주로부터 독립된 문학적 지식인임을 은연중 드러냄으로써 문학적 장르에 어느 정도 허용되고 있던 자유로운 삶의 이념에 대한 문제의식을 피력해보고자 한 이유와 무관하지 않다.BR 이 글은 구봉의 도가철학적인 사유방식에 주목하면서, 구봉이 본 이상적 인격과 삶의 지평에 대한 문제를 구체적으로 조명해본 것이다. 이 글은 다음과 같은 세 가지 주제를 논의의 대상으로 삼는다. 첫째, 구봉의 도가사상에 나타난 성인의 이상적 인격과 무정의 미학적 의의가 무엇인지를 확인한다. 둘째, 빈 배의 은유와 물아상망의 이상적 삶의 지평의 문제에 대해 검토한다. 셋째, 장자가 주목하는 안시처순(安時處順, 태어나는 것과 죽는 때를 편안하게 여기는 태도) 또는 자족안분의 이상적 삶의 형태가 구봉에게서 어떻게 이해되고 있는지를 확인한다.BR 이 글은 이와 같은 논의를 통해 구봉이 도가철학적인 사유방식을 통해 기존의 이분법적 세계인식과 사적 욕망의 굴레로부터 벗어나 개체인격을 해방시키자 한 인간학적 의의를 확보할 수 있었음을 확인하였다. 그리고 우리는 결론적으로 이 글의 논의를 통해 조선중기 유교지식인의 내면세계에 조응된 도가철학의 풍경 하나를 새롭게 발견하여 해석할 수 있는 연구사적 계기를 확보한 의의가 있다. 이 연구에서 본인은 construal 이라는 상식적인 심리학적 개념에 대한 철학적 활용에 관하여 예시하고자 한다. Construal 이라는 것은 하나가 다른면에서 경험되어지는 심리적 상태이다. 가장 영향력 있는 철학적 활용으로는 이해관계에 근거한 construal로써 정서에 관한 Robert C. Roberts의 이론이여왔다. 하지만 본인은 이 개념은 아카라시아나 자기통찰 그리고 도교적 사고를 포함하는 몇 가지 다른 영역에서도 활용성을 가지고 있다고 주장하는 바이다. 전반적으로 이 연구가 이처럼 과소평가되는 개념에 대한 철학적 탐색이 더 이루어 질수 있는 자극이 되기를 바란다.

중국의 문헌 노자에는 ‘여성적’ 표현들이 많은 것이 사실이다. 이 때문에 상당수의 학자들은 이를 현대의 여성주의 철학과 연결시키거나 또는 친여성주의적 철학으로 노자를 해석하려는 시도가 상당수 있어 왔다. 하지만 나는 이러한 해석에 동조하지 않는다. 왜냐하면 이러한 해석은 노자와 관련된 문헌 전통에서 근거를 찾기 어려우며, 또한 특정 주석서를 통한 해석에 바탕하여 해석할 때에만 가능하기 때문이다. 노자를 여성주의와 접속시키려는 시도의 발원지는 조셉 니담, 앤거스 그레이엄 그리고 모계사회와 생식숭배론이다. 이 가운데 가장 이른 시기의 것으로서 나머지 둘에 직접적 영향을 미친 것은 니담의 논의이다. 그런데 이러한 니담의 (...) 해석은 노자에 대한 도식적 규정, 선별적인 원문 인용에 근거한 것으로서 실질적 타당성을 인정받기 어렵다. 오히려 다른 학자들은 노자의 여성적 표현이 여성성의 강조라기보다, 성인 남성 통치자의 보완적인 처세 방식이라 말한다. 실제로 새로이 발굴된 곽점노자에는 여성적 가치를 강조하는 표현을 찾을 수 없으며, 백서노자와 함께 발굴된 문헌에서 ‘여성적 절도’는 오히려 반여성주의적 의미를 담고 있다. 사실상 노자에 대한 여성주의적 해석은, 따라서 니담의 자극을 통해 새롭게 제기된 문제의식으로 노자를 해석하려는 시도로 보아야 한다. 이러한 시도는 나름의 의미를 부여받을 수 있지만, 적어도 우리가 주의할 점은 춘추전국 시대의 노자라는 텍스트 자체에 혹은 ‘노자’라는 인물에게 ‘여성주의적 철학’ 또는 ‘친여성주의적 사상’이 있다고 말하는 것은 곤란하다. This paper concerns broadly with the works of such ethical postmodern theorists as Jacques Derrida, Emmanuel Levinas, Giles Deleuze, focusing on how we can contribute to the development of their ideas by discussing Laozi and Zhuanzi’s Taoism, Buddhism, and modern Korean Neo-Confucianism of Toe-gae Lee. I claim that for criticism and art, literature, film and culture as well as philosophy itself, we are now facing this new need of another notion of subjectivity that not only accepts difference but takes (...) the position of whole positivity toward the Other. This different view of subjectivity that can be called "the sublime subjectivity" or the sublime totality of a human being or a society is essentially an aesthetic one, rather than one that depends upon logic, and it is vital to take advantage of Oriental ideas. From the perspective of the ethics of Levinas, I first place the sublime, jouissance, or pure enjoyment, at the heart of literary criticism. The pure sensibility of the sublime, or jouissance, unlike the raw feelings of pleasure, is an aesthetic sensibility beyond the ontological unity of feelings of pleasures and pains. Then with the Oriental thought, I make an attempt to contribute to the development of the ideas on the ethics of the relation of the reader and the literary text’s language. Laozi’s Taote Ching, Chuanzi, Diamond Sutra, and Toe-gae Lee’s notion of Taeguk are briefly explored in view of the aesthetic transphenomenal dimension and the sublime totality. (shrink)

Nonetheless, many competent scholars have argued that Zhu's crucial notion of li management or principle, rationale, pattern, or order might actually be a static concept: hardly the kind of key theme to build a process philosophy around if indeed it is the case that principle is a static or merely a formal principle of order or pattern . For instance, the influential Beixi ziyi [or Neo-Confucian Terms Explained as translated by Wing-tsit Chan] of Chen Chun proves that one of Master Zhu's most philosophically astute disciples understood li to be proccessive. Therefore, based on one important stream of exegesis of Zhu's daoxue, we can agree with and support Joseph Needham's insight that daoxue is a form of process philosophy. (shrink)

For decades, a review of environmental education initiatives in and beyond schools indicates that many of them were implemented from an anthropocentric perspective. The rationale behind them is often that we must not destroy the environment because doing so is harmful for ourselves, human beings. One striking feature of the various forms of environmental education is the use of fear as a motivator, as people are warned about the frightening consequences of environmental destruction on their life. While this type of (...) fear-based environmental education may be effective to some extent, intimidation cannot be a fundamental solution to environmental issues. We need to form a loving relationship with nature, through love-based environmental education. From intimidation to love, love-based environmental education focuses on enhancing public environmental awareness through inculcating love, respect, and gratitude toward nature, thereby helping to solve present and future environmental problems and construct an eco-friendly world.Love-based environmental education is richly embedded in Eastern philosophies such as Taoism and contemporary Western eco-ethics. In this article, we synthesize the tenets of love-based environmental education mainly through the lens of Taoist philosophy, discuss implementation approaches, and explore contemplative methods to cultivate connection with nature. Finally, we point out fear-based and love-based environmental education are not mutually exclusive. We need a combination of, or a diversity of approaches to ensure that we effectively change attitudes and behaviors of people. (shrink)

조선후기 일군의 학자들은 도가철학을 인식의 틀로 활용하여 서양과학을 수용하고 이해하였다. 사실 도가의 기철학은 동양의 전통 과학과 천문학이 형성ㆍ발전하는 과정에서 사상적 원류로 기능하여 왔으며, 서양과학 수용과정에서 서양과학에 상응하는 학문으로 인식되었다. 대표적으로 조선후기 이익의 우주론과 서명응의 선천역학, 홍대용의 과학적 세계관은 도가의 기철학을 인식 기반으로 자연 세계에 대한 인식 전환을 시도한 사례들이다. 그리고 자연에 대한 이들의 인식 전환은 현실질서의 변화에 대한 요구로 이어졌다. 특히 성리학적 도덕원리와 도가의 기철학이 절충된 형태인 이익의 우주론에서 서양의 천문과학은 기철학의 주요 개념에 대응하여 설명되어졌다. 이와 같은 이익의 우주론은 과학의 (...) 영역뿐만 아니라 사회, 정치의 측면에도 영향을 미쳤다. 즉 그는 중화의 위상을 보편적인 것으로 인정하면서도, 조선의 상대주의적 주체성을 주장하였다. 그리고 정치에서는 객관적 황로정치의 도입을 주장하는 법치주의적 정치사상을 논의하였다. 도가철학은 서양과학을 이해하는 해석의 틀로서만 기능한 것이 아니라 실학에도 중대한 영향을 미쳤다. 도가 기철학은 탈이념적이고 실증적인 사유에, 인식 상대주의는 탈중화주의와 주체성의 자각에 기여하였다. 홍대용과 북학파의 실학은 이러한 도가철학의 영향을 가장 많이 받은 것이다. 봉우 권태훈은 어린 시절부터 유학뿐만 아니라 노장철학 및 다양한 제자백가의 서적을 두루 섭렵한 박람강기의 인물이다. 봉우는 그 중 특히 노장철학적 사유에 매료되어 이를 자기화하여 살아간 특징이 있다. 이 글은 그의 일상을 담고 있는????봉우일기????로부터 관련 내용을 추출하여 구체적으로 검토한 것으로서, 봉우에게서 확인되는 노장철학적 지혜에 관한 연구 결과물에 해당한다. 이 글은 크게 다음과 같은 세 가지 주제에 관하여 주목한 다. 즉 (1) 일상적 생활세계에 대한 노장철학적 반성에 관한 문제, (2) 생활세계 속 자기 통찰과 타자 인식을 통한 소통의 문제, (3) 생활세계 속 ‘무’의 (...) 생활화의 문제 등이 그것이 다. 이 글에서는 서구철학적 용어인 ‘생활세계’란 개념을 논의의 방편으로 끌어들여 적극 활용하며, 노장철학이 제시한 앎의 방식을 현재적 차원에서 재해석할 뿐만 아니라, 생활세 계 속 ‘무’의 생활화 문제를 생활세계가 갖는 갖가지 문제점에 대한 대응방안으로 제시해 본다. 그 구체적인 대응방안은 다음과 같은 네 가지로 요약된다. ① 검소한 삶의 생활화, ② 무위적 삶의 생활화, ③ 올바른 호흡법 운용의 생활화, ④ 붕새의 기도: 큰 세상을 도모 하는 무의 생활화가 그것이다. The paper explores the possibility of finding radical elements of individualistic and libertarian especially left-libertarian thought in Taoist philosophy. It demonstrates that philosophical Taoism should be treated in a comprehensive way, with a particular emphasis on ethics. In connection with this, the anti-authoritarian ethico-political dimension of early Taoism is examined, and it is argued that the Taoist philosophers of ancient China had a deep respect for the equal liberty of individuals, who are all unique by nature. As (...) a result, findings suggest that Taoist anarchism in early medieval China evolved as the logical conclusion from ancient Taoist ethico-political thought since radical ideas were embodied in it. The research goal of this paper is to develop a Taoist-libertarian virtue ethics and to show its political relevance. Therefore, it is also intended to show how Taoist libertarianism avant la lettre undermines political authority despite being neither consequentialist nor deontological, unlike typical American libertarianism. The tendency of postmodernity emphasizes on linguistic deconstruction and construction rather than being and nature. Deconstructive attitude is very meaningful in order to overcome modernity through critiques on reason and rationality. However, I feel still unsatisfactory. It is the beginning of this paper. Taoism is focused on nature's spontaneity as logic and grammar to interpret everything that is Wu-wei as the void. It pays attention to immanent transformation and change in nature. Robert Corrington's Ecstatic Naturalism, as a son of American (...) naturalism and Continental metaphysics, walks confidently on the path of postmodernity of deconstruction. These two thoughts are not far away and seem to be good friends. They are fundamentally different; one is very old, the other is very new. Nevertheless, they are very common in explaining everything through natural process and avoiding causality and anthropocentrism. They are ecstatic and mystical due to the emphasis of spiritual and ecstatic transformation. On the other hand, there is a decisive difference between Taoism and Ecstatic Naturalism. Taoism is truly based on continuity and the connectedness of all things as an organism. There is always a gap and division within Ecstatic Naturalism which can appear in tension, in qualitative difference. This tension and betweenness make orders and signification possible. These differences and gaps are explained by the source of movement as negativity. However, void and nothingness cannot be reduced to negativity in Taoism. Taoism does not like hunger and drives, which cannot support the movement of Tao. The movement of Tao is based on returning to origin. In Taoism, nothingness and the void are basic foundations of all kinds of production and manifestation of Tao. In the universe, continuity and connectedness are always "already@ without human beings' artificial intervention. Therefore, the focus is on harmony and equilibrium rather than on tension or difference. Hunger and drives are not natural in Taoism. Ecstatic Naturalism seeks to construct a sound metaphysics to cover division and to free it from linguistic bondage. Taoism is still skeptical about language and knowledge, i. e., insofar as they do not embody Tao. Spiritual transformation is natural itself through forgetting of the self as desubstantialization of the self, which is quite different from Ecstatic Naturalism, which affirms the reliving powers in the face of the ontological difference. They take two different roads in a sense. However, from the perspective of a Korean American philosopher, they are not quite different but very close. (shrink)

Resumen: La esencia del desarrollo del ecoturismo moderno reside en la coexistencia armónica y armoniosa de la relación entre el hombre y la naturaleza, que es la práctica ecológica del turismo bajo el trasfondo del desarrollo sostenible moderno. El desarrollo del turismo tradicional se centra en los intereses económicos y descuida la protección sostenible de la ecología turística, y el ecoturismo se ha convertido gradualmente en la dirección de desarrollo y reforma del turismo contemporáneo. El taoísmo hace hincapié en seguir (...) a la naturaleza, lo que tiene evidentes tendencias naturalistas, proporciona diferentes perspectivas filosóficas clásicas tradicionales para comprender la relación entre la naturaleza y el desarrollo humano, y tiene un importante significado esclarecedor para promover el desarrollo común del hombre y la naturaleza. El taoísmo aboga por respetar e imitar las leyes del desarrollo natural, persiguiendo la armonía general entre el hombre y la naturaleza, y es coherente con la naturaleza intrínseca del ecoturismo moderno. This paper is an interpretation of the thought of the twentieth century Korean religious thinker, Yoo Yŏng-mo (柳永模, 1890-1981), a pioneer figure who sought to re-conceptualise a Christian understanding of the Ultimate Reality in the light of a positive openness to the plurality of Korean religions. Yoo Yŏng-mo considered that it was possible to present an overall picture of harmony and complementarity between the three traditions of Korea and Christianity, and this is endorsed by the present thesis. This essay is (...) aimed at providing a religious rationale for inter-faith dialogue. Using the principles of ‘Change’ (易, i) and ‘Yin-ying’ (陰陽)dominated in Chinese Classics and East Asian way of thinking, this paper lays out a methodology for envisaging harmony and mutual complementarity between traditions. The effect of some central concepts from within Confucian, Buddhist and Taioist tradition on the Christian thought of Yoo Yŏng-mo is then analysed and examined.In this respect, this paper argues that the Ultimate Reality based on the principle of harmony and mutual complementarity is not only both personal andimpersonal as well as both transcendent and imminent, but also neither personal nor impersonal as well as neither transcendent nor imminent. Essentially, therefore, this essay accepts that Yoo Yŏng-mo’s equating of the Christian idea of God with the ‘Great Ultimate’ (太極) in Confucianism, with ‘Nothingness’ (無) in Buddhism and with the ‘One’ or Tao (道) in the thought of Lao-Chuang (老莊思想) of Taoism is a legitimate equivalence to make and that this does indeed pave the way for a potentially fruitful dialogue between Korea’s main religions. The drawing together of the Great Ultimate, Absolute Nothingness, the One Absolute from the Tao and the traditional personal God of Christianity gives the discussion an entirely new direction which has become a challenge for traditional orthodoxChristian theology and also for a pluralistic religious society. Did Chinese mysticism vanish after its first appearance in ancient Taoist philosophy, to surface only after a thousand years had passed, when the Chinese had adapted Buddhism to their own culture? This first integrated survey of the mystical dimension of Taoism disputes the commonly accepted idea of such a hiatus. Covering the period from the Daode jing to the end of the Tang, Livia Kohn reveals an often misunderstood Chinese mystical tradition that continued through the ages. Influenced by (...) but ultimately independent of Buddhism, it took forms more various than the quietistic withdrawal of Laozi or the sudden enlightenment of the Chan Buddhists. On the basis of a new theoretical evaluation of mysticism, this study analyzes the relationship between philosophical and religious Taoism and between Buddhism and the native Chinese tradition. Kohn shows how the quietistic and socially oriented Daode jing was combined with the ecstatic and individualistic mysticism of the Zhuangzi, with immortality beliefs and practices, and with Buddhist insight meditation, mind analysis, and doctrines of karma and retribution. She goes on to demonstrate that Chinese mysticism, a complex synthesis by the late Six Dynasties, reached its zenith in the Tang, laying the foundations for later developments in the Song traditions of Inner Alchemy, Chan Buddhism, and Neo-Confucianism. I show how the Taoist philosophy, as examplified by both Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu, is capable of providing a metaphysical foundation for environmental ethics. The Taoist concept of nature, the notions of ontological equality and axiological equality of beings, together with the doctrine of Wu Wei can fulfil, at least in a preliminary way, our purpose. The notion of a minimally coherent ethics is introduced and is shown to be pertinent to the construction of an ethics (...) which bears a close relationship to science. (shrink)

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the issue of the meaning to be attributed to our talk of Korean philosophy. Of course, the answer to all the questions that can be raised concerning this issue depends on our conception of philosophy. I start by claiming that philosophy should be an ars vivendi aiming at making our life worth living. Drawing on Socrates’s saying that the unexamined life is not worth living, I try to show that (...) philosophical inquiry has to start with the reflection upon the belief-system underpinning our way of life. Through this reflective activity we are inevitably led to tackle the problem of cultural identity constituted by such belief system; there is no belief-system that is not culturally conditioned. Korean philosophy is an ongoing endeavor of the Korean people to renew their cultural identity—by way of philosophical reflection upon their cultural identity. (shrink)
