This article sets out to propose some characteristic features of the intellectual and ethical attitudes which, in the popular belief and scholarly communities alike, stand for ideals worthy of promoting as ones which could underpin a modern society where both believers and unbelievers can feel at home. The “ethos” is construed to be about the sort of behaviour logically stemming from a tolerant outlook on the one hand, and an intellectual commitment to a noble cause worthy of one’s efforts, on (...) the other. The book by professor Stanisław Kowalczyk, renowned scholar in the field of social philosophy, is, without doubt, one of the most important studies on the idea of freedom. The concept of freedom is as old as mankind. It has many meanings and has been interpreted in many different ways. For instance, we also have the word „liberty," which means „freedom or right" and is synonymous with the word freedom, which means „the condition of being free." The author indicates that (...) in our times the notion of freedom is most frequently used; however, it is often misused or deceptive. Mass media and people of all walks of life talk of liberty; everyone talks of freedom and, for many, it is the highest value. Longing for freedom is rooted in the heart of every human being, for freedom is an existential correlate and the fulfilment of the rational human being. The semantic confusion about the notion of freedom leads to many misuses of the concept. Personalism, as a philosophical concept in which a person stands in the centre of all discussion, serves as a framework for the author's delineation on the concept of freedom. He further states that the appropriate understanding of this value is possible in the context of the personalistic interpretation of a human being. Sport plays today an eminent role in man's life and in societies. Various sciences have made it the subject-matter of their reflection, i.e. psychology, sociology, the natural and humanistic sciences, art, philosophy, and theology. The present work seeks to answer some fundamental questions connected with the phenomenon of sport: what is it for man? whether and when does it serve the social integration of a community? what are the premises and principles of the ethics of sportive activity? what is the (...) aesthetic dimension of sport? what are the relations between sport and religious faith? The philosophical profile is dominant in the book, taking into consideration various aspects of sport: anthropological, social, axiological, and theological. (shrink)

There have been many papers on the Jesuit relationship with the State and with the civil powers in the Western Countries. But there are no such elaborations concerning Poland. However, it was not a central aim, the Jesuits had to engage in the political situation of the country where they did His apostolic work though they did not commit themselves personally in the policy. The Jesuits had their own concept of the State and the state policy. And they showed great (...) caution in preparing the policy treaties in order to save impartiality. (shrink)

The article has two purposes: the argumentative one, which is to present the problem of the authority of judges in democracy, and the argumentative and historical one, which is to outline Bogusław Wolniewicz’s philosophy of politics. The theoretical approach to the title issue has become a necessity after the Polish constitutional crisis, which questioned the so-called myth of the non-political character of judicature in 2015. In the on-going discussion, opposite positions have been formulated. They can be referred to as relativism (...) and objectivism (the latter proclaims judicial apoliticality in the personal, jurisprudential and ideological sense). Advocating the legal relativism, I aim to bring out the roots of objectivism that lead us to the Roussonian democratism (contrasted with the Jeffersonian one). (shrink)

Mocną stroną Wciórki jest dobra orientacja wśród poglądów nowożytnych filozofów. Szczególnie wartościowe są końcowe rozdziały książki, zwłaszcza porównanie dwóch koncepcji Boga: filozoficznej i religijnej. Słabszą stroną podręcznika jest opracowanie i prezentacja metafizyki klasycznej. Autor nie pokazał mianowicie, jak jest jeszcze możliwa metafizyka po Kancie. Nie ustosunkował się do zarzutów M. Heideggera, który klasyczna filozofia Boga nazywa onto-teologią, sprowadzającą jakoby Boga do rzędu bytów ograniczonych. Świadomie nie wszedł w dyskusję z fizyką współczesną, mimo ze np. kosmologia relatywistyczna i teoria kwantów są (...) wyzyskiwane w celu negacji potrzeby istnienia Boga Stwórcy dla wyjaśnienia świata. Brak konkretnych przykładów w przedstawianiu argumentów św. Tomasza sprawia wrażenie aprioryzmu. W sumie książka Wiedzieć, ze jest Bóg nie wydaje się być ostatnim słowem w filozofii Boga, ale może być materiałem do dalszych przemyśleń. Obecny artykuł ma na celu sprowokowanie dyskusji, która by przybliżyła rozwiązanie sporu o argumenty na istnienie Boga. (shrink)

The article discusses the category of interest, which is an explanatory category of social phenomena in materialist ontology, particularly the Marxist variety. The considerations are guided by Hegel’s conviction that every category taken in abstraction loses its exploratory value, so instead of asking for such an ultimate basis for explanation, one should investigate what else should be assumed for something – interest – to really mean something. Following this advice, the text carries out a conceptual analysis of the categories of (...) life, teleology and identity and their mutual relationship based on Hegelian philosophy. Overcoming the ambiguity of Hegel’s argument makes it possible to uncover the dialectically negative identity of spirit that is society and nature, which, transferred to the dimension of social relations, makes it possible to talk about the internal connection of interest with its negation, which is disinterestedness. It turns out that interest can only mean something if it is related to disinterestedness, which, again, on the grounds of social relations and especially class conflict, proves to be the interest of the possibility of being disinterested. In the final part of the article, the result of these considerations is referred to Hegelian social philosophy, where it turns out to be reflected in the relation between the two main categories of ‘ethical life’ and ‘moral life’ usually devalued by interpreters. At the same time, the relation between these categories corresponds to the relation between the universal model of the bourgeoisie with their economic interests and the disinterested representatives of the general estate. For many believers, encounters with evil trigger a deep desire to understand the divine reasons for permitting evil, that is, a desire for theodicy. Very often, however, attempts to find a theodicy fail—a phenomenon called the inscrutability of evil. Skeptical theists attribute this failure to our cognitive limitations as creatures. In this paper, I argue that the clash between the common desire for theodicy and the inscrutability of evil should be analyzed using the concept of absurdity, famously explored by Albert (...) Camus and some contemporary philosophers studying the meaning of life. I then propose that a loving God would not subject human beings to the experience of absurdity, so He would not create a world in which our cognitive limitations prevent us from finding a theodicy. This conclusion has important implications for the plausibility of the skeptical theist’s position. (shrink)

Celem artykułu jest interpretacja i krytyka koncepcji teistycznych znaków naturalnych (TZN), przedstawionej przez Charlesa S. Evansa. TZN to charakterystyczne doświadczenia lub własności świata, które sprawiają, żejednostka, która się z nimi zetknie, formuje pewne podstawowe, uzasadnione przekonania o istnieniu Boga i jego naturze. W artykule proponuję dwie interpretacje tego, jak funkcjonują TZN, odwołujące się do kategorii percepcji i pośredniej identyfikacji per- cepcyjnej. Przedstawiam także dwa argumenty krytyczne wobec koncepcji TZN. Po pierwsze, wskazuję, że nie wyjaśnia ona zadowalająco, dlaczego TZN są niejednoznaczne, (...) tj., mogą być odczytywane na różne sposoby. Po drugie, zauważam, że pewne doświadczenia można potraktować jako „ateistyczne znaki naturalne”. Istnienie takich doświadczeń daje rację do przypuszczenia, że Bógjest zwodzicielem. (shrink)

Das Buch über J. Mirewicz wurde von Slawomir Szczyrba, einem Lehrbeauftragten des Priesterseminars in Łódź, als Doktorarbeit unter der Leitung von Professor Bischof B. Bejze verfaßt. Szczyrba rechnet seine Arbeit der religionsphilosophischen Werken zu. Er will die These nachweisen, daß die Stellung des Menschen gegenüber Gott einen bedeutenden Einfluß auf sein Wertsystem und, in weiterer Folge, auf sein moralisches Benehmen hat. Derselben Meinung war auch Mirewicz. In Hinsicht auf die ethische Implikationen der Bejahung Gottes gehört das Hauptthema der vielartigen Tätigkeiten (...) Mirewicz's zu der immerwährend aktuellen und offenstehenden Frage nach der Selbständigkeit der Ethik. (shrink)

Traces of attempts to penetrate this mystery are already noticeable in pre-philosophical Greek philosophical thought. Many great and admired to this day, philosophers, this measure, what, Plato and Aristotle, struggled with her. Ogłoszenie encykliki Rerum novarum przez Leona XIII w dniu 15 maja 1891 roku dało początek temu, co dzisiaj nazywamy nauką społeczną Kościoła, ścisłej - Kościoła katolickiego, ponieważ Kościoły prawosławne nie podjęły tego tematu, zaś Kościoły protestanckie zajęły się problematyką społeczną dopiero w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach XX wieku. Istnieje ogólna zgoda specjalistów co do łączenia narodzin nauki społecznej Kościoła z ogłoszeniem tej encykliki. Przedtem nie istniał oficjalny nurt nauczania społecznego, w kształcie zamierzonego ciągu formalnych wypowiedzi Urzędu Nauczycielskiego Kościoła. Kościół pod koniec XIX (...) stulecia stal się świadkiem radykalnych przemian politycznych, gospodarczych i społecznych oraz znalazł się w sferze różnorakich wpływów dominujących ideologii. Życie gospodarcze weszło w okres tzw. „drugiej rewolucji przemysłowej", przypadającej na lata 1870-1914. Rerum novarum uważa się powszechnie za początek nauczania społecznego Kościoła w jego nowoczesnym ujęciu. Wcześniej jedynie ostrzegano wiernych przed błędami. (shrink)
