Zygmunt Zawirski: His Life and Work: With Selected Writings on Time, Logic and the Methodology of Science.Irena Szumilewicz & Zygmunt Zawirski - 1994 - Springer Verlag.
Zygmunt Zawirski (1882-1948), an eminent and original Polish philosopher, belonged to the Lwow-Warsaw School (LWS) which left an indelible trace in logic, semiotics and philosophy of science. LWS was founded in 1895 by K. Twardowski, a disciple of Brentano, in the spirit of clarity, realism and analytic philosophy. LWS was more than 25 years older than the Vienna Circle (VC). This belies, inter alia, the not infrequently repeated statement that LWS was one of the many centres initiated by VC.

The text is the first part of an unpublished manuscript, written in 1920. According to the author, on the one hand, it is impossible to create metaphysics based on experience, and giving absolutely safe interpretation of the reality. But, on the other hand, experiential metaphysics, being satisfied with only probable results, is not of exactly scientific character. Nevertheless, we should work at constructing a „metaphysics”, integrating results of particular sciences into one system, free of contradiction, but being conscious of provisionality (...)

Zygmunt Zawirski: His Life and Work: With Selected Writings on Time, Logic and the Methodology of Science.Irena Szumilewicz-Lachman, Robert S. Cohen & Bettina Bergo (eds.) - 1994 - Dordrecht, Netherland: Springer.
Among the extraordinary Polish philosophers of the past one hundred years, Zygmunt Zawirski deserves to be given particular attention for his fusion of analytic and historical scholarship. Strikingly versatile, and con tributing original work in all his fields of competence, Zawirski thought through issues in the philosophical aspects of relativity theory, on the claims of intuitionalistic foundations of mathematics, on the nature and usefulness of many-value Logics, and on the calculus of probability, on the axiomatic method in science (...)

    Leading Metaphilosophical Values of the Lvov-Warsaw School.Tadeusz Szubka - 2022 - Filozofia Nauki 30 (1):47-52.
The article explores the concept of scientific philosophy as understood by members of the Lvov-Warsaw School. The author argues that according to Twardowski and his students, philosophy should be done as an exact discipline which ought to be pursued in critical and collaborative spirit. Selected views on scientific philosophy are analyzed, including ideas of Ajdukiewicz, Zawirski, and Dąmbska. It is claimed that though the conception of scientific philosophy is beset with crucial and fundamental ambiguities, it was far more important (...)

Zygmunt Zawirski, a member of the Lwow-Warsaw Philosophical School, in 1927-28 published an extensive paper (in three parts) devoted to the critical examination of the eternal return hypothesis - the idea that the history of the universe is fundamentally a cyclic process. After presenting the development of this idea throughout the ages Zawirski discusses arguments on its behalf coming mainly from the second law of thermodynamics and from the Poincaré recurrence theorem. Zawirski's criticism is confronted with the (...)

The Philosophy of Mathematics and Logic in the 1920s and 1930s in Poland.Roman Murawski - 2014 - Basel: Imprint: Birkhäuser.
The aim of this book is to present and analyze philosophical conceptions concerning mathematics and logic as formulated by Polish logicians, mathematicians and philosophers in the 1920s and 1930s. It was a remarkable period in the history of Polish science, in particular in the history of Polish logic and mathematics. Therefore, it is justified to ask whether and to what extent the development of logic and mathematics was accompanied by a philosophical reflection. We try to answer those questions by analyzing (...)

Between experience and metaphysics: philosophical problems of the evolution of science.Stefan Amsterdamski - 1975 - Boston: D. Reidel Pub. Co..
Polish philosophy of science has been the beneficiary of three powerful creative streams of scientific and philosophical thought. First and fore most was the Lwow-Warsaw school of Polish analytical philosophy founded by Twardowski and continued in their several ways by Les niewski, Lukasiewicz, and Tarski, the great mathematical and logical philosophers, by Kotarbinski, probably the most distinguished teacher, public figure, and culturally influential philosopher of the inter-war and post-war period, and by Ajdukiewicz, the linguistic philosopher who was intellectually sympathetic with (...)

“Of all the fine arts, drawing is indisputably the most useful, the most positive, and the most capable of practical application,” declared Sigismond Schuster, author of one of the many popular drawing books of the nineteenth century. “It might in this respect be classed rather among the useful than the ornamental arts, for it is the basis of them all, and is an indispensable auxiliary to every mechanic. Drawing is the language of nature and of the imagination; it secures (...)

Towards scientific metaphysics.Krzysztof Śleziński - 2019 - Berlin: Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften.
The book presents results from research conducted by Zygmunt Zawirski on the theory of knowledge, quantum mechanics, logic, ontology and metaphysics. 0The works undertaken in the field of logic, methodology and philosophy of science, and in particular the philosophy of nature and natural science testify to a solid preparation for the fundamental task of developing contemporary scientific philosophy. The emerging mathematical natural science did not have those possibilities which emerged in the 20th Century and which Zygmunt Zawirski (1882-1948) (...)

SYLLOGISTIC WITH NEGATIVE TERMS IN THE SEMANTICALLY TRANSPARENT FORMULATION S u m m a r y The paper refers to the classic works of Polish authors (Kukasiewicz, SleszyNski, Zawirski) and comprises the idea of proof by ecthesis (originally formulated by Borkowski) with the use of list notation to show that the five diagrams by Euler, which provide a starting point for SleszyNski’s analysis, adequately formulate the system of syllogistic with negative terms (IwanuX and Wedberg’s axiomatization).

The volume is a collection of essays about prominent Polish 20th century philosophers of science and scientists who were concerned with problems in the philosophy of science. The contribution made by Polish logicians, especially those from the Lvov-Warsaw School, like Lukasiewicz, Kotarbiński, Czeżowski or Ajdukiewicz, is already well known. One of the aims of the volume is to offer a broader perspective. The papers collected here are devoted to the work of such philosophers as Zawirski, Metallmann, Dąmbska, Mehlberg, Szaniawski (...)
