As a leading member of the Vienna Circle, Rudolph Carnap's aim was to bring about a "unified science" by applying a method of logical analysis to the empirical data of all the sciences. This work, first published in English in 1934, endeavors to work out a way in which the observation statements required for verification are not private to the observer. The work shows the strong influence of Wittgenstein, Russell, and Frege.

It is not the aim of the present essay to defend the principle of empiricism against apriorism or anti-empiricist metaphysics. Taking empirism for granted, we wish to discuss, the question what is meaningful. The word ‘meaning’ will here be taken in its empiricist sense; an expression of language has meaning in this sense if we know how to use it in speaking about empirical facts, either actual or possible ones. Now our problem is what expressions are meaningful in this sense. (...) The concept of event provides the essential bridge from the realm of virtuality of the quantum state to real phenomena in space and time. We ask how much we can gather from existing theory about the localization of an event and point out that decoherence and coarse graining—though important—do not suffice for a consistent interpretation without the additional principle of random realization.

Introducing his paper, Slezak (p. 428) proposes “to examine Botha's criticisms in detail with a view to demonstrating that they are without foundation and are based on the most fundamental misunderstandings”. Concluding his paper, Slezak (p. 439) expresses the hope that he has shown “that the conceptions on which these criticisms rest are so seriously flawed as to make it unprofitable to attempt to unravel the rest of his analysis”. These formulations, by all standards, represent rather strong rhetoric. But, as (...) the preceding paragraphs have shown, Slezak's discussion sadly lacks the relevant and accurate analyses needed to give substance to his rhetoric. (shrink)

In der Erfahrung sind zwei Stufen zu unterscheiden: Die primäre Welt besteht aus den noch nicht dinglich gedeuteten Sinnesempfindungen in ihrer einfachsten Ordnung nach Zeit-, Raum-und Qualitätsunterschieden. Alle Ordnung und Verarbeitung der Erfahrung von solcher Art, daß sie auch weggelassen werden kann, rechnet zur zweiten Stufe. Ihr Inhalt ist die sekundäre Welt; Beispiele: die gewöhnliche Welt des täglichen Lebens und die physikalische Welt.Der Begriff der Dimensionszahl (DZ) wird festgelegt. Während die sekundäre (die gewöhnliche und die physikalische) Welt die DZ (3+1) (...) hat (d. h. 3 Raum- und 1 Zeitdimension), ergibt die Untersuchung für die primäre Welt (den Bereich der ungedeuteten Sinnesempfindungen) nur die DZ (2+1). Die Konstruktion der sekundären Welt schließt also eine Erhöhung der DZ um 1 ein.Nach einer Bestimmung des Begriffs der determinierenden und der beschränkenden Gesetze zeigt sich: In der sekundären (physikalischen) Welt gelten determinierende Gesetze bestimmter Art (ersten Grades). In der primären Welt bestehen weder determinierende noch auch bloß beschränkende Gesetze. Der Aufbau der sekundären Welt führt also die Determiniertheit neu ein.Die beiden in die sekundäre Welt eingebauten Fiktionen: Dreidimensionalität des Raumes (gleichbedeutend mit Vierdimensionalität des Weltgeschehens) und Determiniertheit oder physikalische Kausalität stehen in logischem Abhängigkeits-verhältnis zueinander. Es scheint, als wären wir ein halbes Jahrhundert lang an einem Denker vorbeigegangen, der uns zur Wissens- und Wissenschaftsproblematik mehr zu sagen hatte als mancher, den wir feiern. Gemeint ist der russische Philosoph Semen Ljudvigovic Frank. Auf der Basis seiner Forschungen versucht diese Studie systematisch-kritisch einen Neuansatz, der zu ungewohnten Konsequenzen vor allem in Wissenschaftstheorie, Anthropologie und Religionsphilosophie führt.
