Samuel J. Wheeler defends Wittgenstein's criticism of Cantor's set theory against the objections raised by Hilary Putnam. Putnam claims that Wittgenstein's dismissal of the basic tenets of this set theory concerning the noncountability of the set of real numbers was unfounded and ill‐conceived. In Wheeler's view, Putnam's charges result from his failure to grasp Wittgenstein's intention and, in particular, to consider the difference between empirical and logical impossibility. In this paper, I discuss the interpretation of the method of deconstruction in David J. Gunkel’s Deconstruction (MIT Press 2021). I focus on the relationship between deconstruction and truth. I hold that the concept of truth is indispensable for deconstruction since truth introduces correctness conditions for the deconstructive method. However, I claim that truth, being essential and primitive for deconstruction, is fundamentally inaccessible for being analyzed by the latter. ------------------------- Received: 19/10/2022. This article argues that if contemporary philosophical counseling wishes to perpetuate the spirit of ancient philosophy, it must also incorporate metaphysics. This kind of incorporation means, among other things, regarding as essential the implementation of the meditation practices of certain historical schools of philosophy. Meditation was an inherent feature not only of Eastern schools of thought, but also within Western philosophy. These practices lead to a psychophysical state, known as ataraxia, which causes the perception of reality to undergo a radical (...) change, including occasional “altered states of consciousness,” as they are known by psychology. The author calls such practices “live metaphysics.” He also maintains that, without the inclusion of such metaphysical practices, philosophical counselling and coaching lose their eudemonic character and become a means of hedonistic gratification in the service of the liberated ego of the contemporary man. The language of phenomenology includes terms such as intentionality, phenom- enon, insight, analysis, sense, not to mention the key term of Edmund Husserl’s manifesto, “the things themselves” to return to . But what does the “things them- selves” properly mean? How come the term is replaced by the “findings” over time? And what are the findings for? The investigation begins by looking at the tricky legacy of the modern turn, trying to clarify ties to past masters, including Francis- co Suárez (...) and Augustine of Hippo . The former, because his influence goes beyond René Descartes reaching undoubtedly Franz Brentano and his students, as well as Martin Heidegger . The latter, because Augustine gives a personal component to the Greek inheritance, marked by the “inward turn .” However, it would not be possible to review the history of thought without the help offered by Jan Patočka's analyses . Patočka discloses the “care” of the Greek philosophers, Plato and Dem- ocritus among others, “for the soul”, we would say with Patočka for “being,” whose sense “does not leave us indifferent” as the leitmotiv of Ancient Philosophy . Nev- ertheless, in his lectures on Plato and Europe, Patočka points out that you must be careful not to confuse the phenomena of things, of existens, with the phenomena of being . Finally, Patočka’s legacy is found in the efforts to reconcile the life-feeling with the modern construction of reality, which means “a radical reconstruction of the naive and natural world of common sense .” In some ways, intentionality is to be revised . The aim of this paper is to analyze the basis for the moral obligation to remember. As the moral relation to the past is primarily a matter of shared identity, the kind of obligation in question splits into two related issues, namely, that of political, state-oriented and state-organized memory on which the political identity rests and that of memory labour grounded in social identities based in shared, time-extended projects. Drawing upon tensions between these two, I discuss time control and the (...) accumulation of identity as central to memory labour and, referring to John Zerzan’s critique of symbolical roots of power, pinpoint the moral basis of such an accumulation. On the basis of this, I argue for nesting the duty to remember in acknowledging the agent’s recognition of the relatedness and dependency of their agency and possibilities of flourishing which can be obtained thanks to adjusting the field of the virtue of practical wisdom so that it includes members of the time-extended community. Husserl’s commitment to reality is marked by the urgency to return, or rather to a repeated return each time the objective is achieved . He explains this explicitly in The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology, taking his cue from Descartes’ Meditations . Reduction, which is the exact name for re- turn, means change of attitude, abandonment of the natural position as naive . Jan Patočka notes in this regard, that today people who have experienced modern sci- ence no (...) longer simply live in the naive natural world . The naive natural world is in- terpreted under species of the mathematical model . So, the gap between meaning as an expectation of experience and meaning within the framework of the model is increasingly evident . If intentionality, according to Husserl and disciples, includ- ing Heidegger, cannot be other than the idea itself, then it is just a something for something . It’s like giving voice to one thing and not another . Commitment to life (Husserl’s Lebenswelt) requires a return to corporeality, as Patočka adds, following Maine de Biran’s accurate insight, that is, of something immediately given, prior to any perceptual experience . The term “matrix” in the title brings to mind the eponymous 1999 film based on the philosophical metaphor of Plato’s cave in the fashion of the digital age . The protagonist, Neo, finds himself living for a long time in the lack of support of reality, precisely because of distrust: something is wrong, and this can only be felt . However, how can the hacker mentality help you under- stand that perhaps it is but a game? (shrink)

Współczesne dylematy filozofii i kultury powstały z inicjatywy pracowników Zakładu Filozofii Współczesnej, Myśli Społecznej i Ontologii UWM w Olsztynie. Jednak miały one stanowić przyczynek do zintegrowania badań nie tylko środowiska naukowego tegoż zakładu czy Instytutu Filozofii Uniwersytetu Warmińsko-Mazurskiego (jego kadry, doktorantów i absolwentów). Celem niniejszego projektu było bowiem zawiązanie ściślejszej współpracy pomiędzy naukowcami Wydziału Humanistycznego, która mogłaby w przyszłości zaowocować wyznaczeniem wspólnych celów, kierunków i ram badawczych czy choćby interdyscyplinarnymi spotkaniami, konferencjami i publikacjami. Przyjęliśmy, że wątkiem łączącym dociekania naukowe w (...) przestrzeni humanistyki jest jeden wspólny temat – kultura. I nie ma w tym nic odkrywczego, bowiem przedmiotem badań nauk humanistycznych jest człowiek – jej twórca, uczestnik i twór, dlatego też podstawowe w jego poznaniu okazuje się zrozumienie całokształtu jego duchowego i materialnego dorobku kulturowego. I tak filozofia (nie tylko filozofia kultury, ale i filozofia polityki, filozofia życia gospodarczego, historiozofia), literaturoznawstwo, estetyka, politologia, socjologia, historia i wiedza o stosunkach międzynarodowych stają się naukami o kulturze. This article is a critical discussion of the book Setting Health-Care Priorities by Torbjörn Tännsjö. This critique targets mainly Tännsjö’s method, but also several unjustified conclusions and some implicit assumptions.

The subject of the paper is an attempt to apply the category of “negative certainty” to cognition of man according to Jean-Luc Marion and a discussion of his project. Marion developed this concept inspired mainly by Kant’s philosophy. It is about the certainty of something negative, something that cannot be captured as an object. Negative certainty is not the certainty of negativity, but the certainty of that, which positivity cannot be reduced to objectivity. Marion offers criticism the Cartesian ideal, which (...) privileges the object and, following Heidegger, emphasizes the event-based nature of the phenomenon. Negative certainty is a re-elaboration of a saturated phenomenon, but from the point of view of its recipient. The category of “negative certainty” is then applied to human, who is not an ordinary phenomenon, but a set of saturated phenomena. The analysis of the views of Descartes and Kant leads to the conclusion that it is impossible to approach man objectively and define his quidditas. There is no answer to the question “who is a man?”, because it itself is a question (St. Augustine), not an answer. Marion points to three aporias of the objective understanding of human: epistemological, alienation and otherness. As a result, the metaphysics of man is not possible, and his negative knowledge is grounded in the field of theology. Although Marion’s thought is interesting, several objections can be leveled against it, which are formulated in the last part of the paper. Despite them, the project of negative certainty in relation to human defends itself and shows the convergence of egology and dialogics. (shrink)

The paper discusses the unique relationship that exists between the ego and one’s own body. There are two fundamental possibilities to grasp it – using the verb “to be” or “to have,” which results in two known formulas: “to be the body” or “to have the body.” However, after careful examination, it turns out that they are one-sided and entangle us in numerous aporias. A more complete picture of the relationships with one’s own body is made possible by a phenomenological (...) description, which is a first-person and direct approach. The body, given in numerous experiences, turns out to be paradoxical and ambiguous. This is also my relation with it – it is feeling myself and others, getting to know myself and the world; an internal and at the same time external bond, at most my own experience along with the need to transcend the body. Finally, we consider whether the category of “relationship” resp. “relation” matches the experience of one’s own body. Perhaps a better solution is to give up this term and describe the body as a character of human being. (shrink)

The paper deals with the problem of digital restitution of art to post-colonial and postdependency countries. A new model of digital restitution composed of two elements: creation of a digital copy with a NFT attached and creation of new property right in a physical and digital object has been proposed. A system of balances between the rights and duties based on the prior user concept has been developed.

This paper describes ways in which political speakers define and legitimize future policies by construing different policy options in terms of ‘privileged’ and ‘oppositional’ futures. Privileged and oppositional futures are conceptual projections of alternative policy visions occurring in quasi-dialogic chunks of speech, revealing specific evidential, mood, and modality patterns. Privileged future involves the speaker’s preferred, or at least acknowledged vision and is articulated through absolute modality and evidential markers which derive from factual evidence, history, and reason. Oppositional future involves an (...) antagonistic and plainly threatening vision, expressed by probabilistic modality and (usually) the interrogative mood. Following the principle of psychological consistency in belief, oppositional future is normally communicated first, allowing for a swift and strong response from the privileged future expressed in the speaker-preferred vision. The author supports such an individualization of the right to pardon, which would turn the state into a contractor who is hired by citizens exclusively to guarantee them security and self-possession.

This book brings together a range of interpretations and possibilities on a variety of humanistic topics, including philosophy, literature, culture, film, economics, social issues, politics, and more. Skowroński involves the work of philosophers such as Kant, Dewey, Santayana, and Kołakowski as he delves into various philosophical problems using the lens of Rorty’s neopragmatist thought.

There is an ongoing investigation by scholars of ethics and economics into whether human decision making and the resultant acts should be guided by rules and procedures or by judgment and discretion. Although each of these modes offers advantages and disadvantages to decision makers, they are by no means neutral in their effect on professional development. The paper presents an in-depth view of discretionary decisions using an Aristotelian-Thomistic framework. This is the first of the series of papers which focus on (...) the application of realistic philosophical principles to ethical professional behaviour and decision making in daily practice. Results indicate that classical philosophical theories which use virtues and truth as indispensable components still may give rise to desirable and moral conduct among individuals who apply them. Internal audit provides an independent and objective opinion to the Board on risk management, control and governance, by measuring and evaluating their effectiveness in achieving an organisation’s agreed objectives. It also provides an independent and objective consultancy service to help line management improve the organisation’s processes. Internal auditors should respect in their work some ethical rules, especially these included in the Code of Ethics formed by the IIA. This code is intended to clarify the standard of conduct expected from all (...) members of the internal audit unit. The main four principles that should be observed are as follows: integrity, objectivity, competency and confidentiality Being ethical in internal audit is necessary in order to win the trust of the environment in which auditors work. However, declaring one’s readiness to respect the Code of Ethics is not enough. Much more important is to implement and comply with given rules in carrying out audit duties. (shrink)

_The Life of Reason in an Age of Terrorism_ brings together seventeen original essays that discuss George Santayana’s social and political thought within the context of contemporary considerations, especially terrorism.

Creature consciousness provides a physicalist account of the first-person awareness. I argue that non-reductive consciousness is not about phenomenal qualia ; it is about the stream of awareness that makes any objects of perception epistemically available and ontologically present. This kind of consciousness is central, internally to one’s awareness. Externally, the feel about one’s significant other’s that “there is someone home” is quite important too. This is not substance dualism since creature consciousness and functional consciousness are both at different generality (...) levels of physicalism. Surprisingly, pre-Hegel philosophy of pure subject is more fitting with the current engineering approach than analytical phenomenalism. The complementary view of subject- and object-related perspectives, may come from Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre; but here it is placed, securely within the physicalist paradigm. It is essential to the Engineering Thesis in Machine Consciousness, which helps us understand under what general conditions a machine would be first-person conscious, but when it is merely functionally conscious. Mianem „ewolucyjnego argumentu z rozumu przeciwko naturalizmowi” określa się tu argumentację, którą współcześnie sformułowali przede wszystkim Clive Staples Lewis, Alvin Plantinga oraz Victor Reppert. Jej sednem jest twierdzenie, że uznanie wiarygodności władz poznawczych człowieka nie daje się pogodzić z naturalistycznym obrazem świata. Problem polega na tym, że naturalistyczna koncepcja pochodzenia naszych władz poznawczych tłumaczy ich genezę przez odwołanie ostatecznie do czynników czysto fizykalnych, w szczególności nieintencjonalnych, czyli do charakterystyk nieadekwatnych w stosunku do aktów poznawczych. W artykule przedstawiono sformułowania tego argumentu, (...) dokonane przez trzech wymienionych autorów, ze wskazaniem na podobieństwa i różnice między tymi trzema wersjami. Następnie argument został poddany ocenie w kontekście idei emergencji. Zarysowana została możliwa odpowiedź na pytanie: czy idea emergencji obala wspomniany argument? Dokonane zostało rozróżnienie na empiryczną ideę emergencji i ideę emergencji, rozszerzoną o aspekt metafizyczny. Rozpatrzona została także kwestia, czy negatywny argument z rozumu przeciwko naturalizmowi może być uznany również za argument pozytywny na rzecz określonego stanowiska metafizycznego, a jeśli tak, to jakiego. Ostatecznie okazało się, że idea emergencji w dowolnej z dwóch wymienionych postaci nie stanowi wsparcia dla naturalistycznej wizji rzeczywistości, a w przypadku wersji rozszerzonej o założenie naturalizmu jest wrażliwa na ewolucyjny argument z rozumu przeciwko naturalizmowi. ---------------------------------------- Zgłoszono: 30/06/2024. Teologia już niejednokrotnie składała współczesnej myśli filozoficznej obietnicę poszerzenia horyzontów czy też otwarcia jej na transcendencję. Jednak obietnica ta nie spotkała się – jak dotąd – z przychylnym przyjęciem, gdyż teologia sama nie zdołała przekonać filozofii o swojej racjonalności. Filozofia przestała być bowiem, z jednej strony, wrażliwa na argumentację natury metafizycznej, z drugiej zaś, teologia jest skłonna poddawać się metodologiom nauk szczegółowych, rezygnując przy tym z własnej odrębności. Zarysowana tu hermeneutyka teologii jest w pierwszym rzędzie badaniem teologii jako nauki, próbą (...) uprawomocnienia jej na gruncie jednego z najważniejszych kierunków filozofii współczesnej, mianowicie hermeneutyki filozoficznej. Teologia zostaje tu ujęta w aspekcie immanencji, choć bynajmniej nie zamyka się w jej horyzoncie. Dziejący się świat teologii rozpada się na „kawałki” – miejsca teologiczne – które jednak wchodząc ze sobą w interakcje, uczestniczą w grze teologicznej. Jako pole owej gry zostaje wskazana liturgia, miejsce metodologicznie wyróżnione ze względu na naoczność dokonujących się konsekwencji gry teologicznej. Analiza czerpie z takich źródeł jak teoria miejsc teologicznych Melchiora Cano OP, koncepcja kręgu hermeneutycznego Martina Heideggera oraz projekt hermeneutyki filozoficznej Hansa-Georga Gadamera, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem roli prze(d)sądów, utożsamianych tutaj z miejscami teologicznymi. Nowość spojrzenia na tradycję katolicką kontekście myśli hermeneutycznej sprawia, że prezentowana książka może trafić nie tylko do teologów i filozofów, ale także do badaczy szeroko rozumianej kultury. This paper introduces the special issue of Diametros devoted to discussing “Expertise, Disagreement, and Trust in Vaccine Science and Policy. The Importance of Transparency in a World of Experts” by Alberto Giubilini, Rachel Gur-Arie, and Euzebiusz Jamrozik. In their article, Giubilini et al. argue that expert transparency—particularly regarding disagreements among experts—is ethically crucial for securing public trust in vaccine policy. Several contributors to this issue expand upon that claim. For example, Maciej Macuga proposes that transparency is necessary to make coercive (...) vaccination policies morally legitimate, and Lucie White interprets the core disagreement surrounding vaccine recommendations as a divergence in underlying values. Other authors challenge aspects of Giubilini et al.’s position: Udo Schüklenk and Ben Almassi caution that greater transparency may not bolster trust or improve vaccine uptake, while Ezio Di Nucci presents an analytical argument showing that a purely epistemic notion of expertise leads to paradoxical conclusions—namely, that experts should care neither about trustworthiness, nor trust. Jamie Watson emphasizes that it is the reliable process of producing scientific knowledge that grounds expert trustworthiness. Finally, Elena Popa and Richard Matthews argue that redistributions of power, both in society at large and within expert communities, are necessary to foster genuine trust. (shrink)

Visual targets which follow a prime stimulus and a mask can be identified faster when they are incompatible rather than compatible with the prime . According to the self-inhibition hypothesis, the initial activation of the motor response is elicited by the prime based on its identity. This activation leads to benefits for compatible trials and costs for incompatible trials. This motor activation is followed by an inhibition phase, leading to an NCE if perceptual evidence of the prime is immediately removed (...) by the mask. The object-updating and mask-triggered inhibition hypotheses emphasize the role of the mask content . We show that the NCE may appear even if nonmasking neutral flankers are presented instead of a mask. Moreover, although with target-like flankers the NCE is larger, it occurred if flankers and targets are built from dissimilar elements. Therefore, masks/flankers can evoke an inhibition phase independently of whether or not they remove evidence for the prime and whether they are similar to the targets. (shrink)
