The paper explores the interplay among moral progress, evolution and moral realism. Although it is nearly uncontroversial to note that morality makes progress of one sort or another, it is far from uncontroversial to define what constitutes moral progress. In a minimal sense, moral progress occurs when a subsequent state of affairs is better than a preceding one. Moral realists conceive “it is better than” as something like “it more adequately reflects moral facts”; therefore, on a realist view, moral progress (...) can be associated with accumulations of moral knowledge. From an evolutionary perspective, on the contrary, since there cannot be something like moral knowledge, one might conclude there cannot even be such a thing as moral progress. More precisely, evolutionism urges us to ask whether we can acknowledge the existence of moral progress without being committed to moral realism. A promising strategy, I will argue, is to develop an account of moral progress based on moral understanding rather than moral knowledge. On this view, moral progress follows increases in moral understanding rather than accumulations of moral knowledge. Whether an understanding-based account of moral progress is feasible and what its implications for the notion itself of moral progress are, will be discussed. (shrink)

The aim of this article is to explore the impact of Darwinism in metaethics and dispel some of the confusion surrounding it. While the prospects for a Darwinian metaethics appear to be improving, some underlying epistemological issues remain unclear. We will focus on the so-called Evolutionary Debunking Arguments (EDAs) which, when applied in metaethics, are defined as arguments that appeal to the evolutionary origins of moral beliefs so as to undermine their epistemic justification. The point is that an epistemic disanalogy (...) can be identified in the debate on EDAs between moral beliefs and other kinds of beliefs, insofar as only the former are regarded as vulnerable to EDAs. First, we will analyze some significant debunking positions in metaethics in order to show that they do not provide adequate justification for such an epistemic disanalogy. Then, we will assess whether they can avoid the accusation of being epistemically incoherent by adopting the same evolutionary account for all kinds of beliefs. In other words, once it is argued that Darwinism has a corrosive impact on metaethics, what if its universal acid cannot be contained? (shrink)

The so-called Evolutionary Debunking Arguments are arguments that appeal to the evolutionary genealogy of our beliefs to undermine their justification. When applied to morality, such arguments are intended to undermine moral realism. In this paper I will discuss Andreas Mogensen’s recent effort to secure moral realism against EDAs. Mogensen attempts to undermine the challenge provided by EDAs in metaethics through the distinction between proximate and ultimate causes in biology. The problem with this move is that the proximate/ultimate distinction is misconceived. (...) If ultimate and proximate causes are properly understood to be complementary, such distinction cannot affect EDAs in metaethics. Therefore, I will argue, Mogensen’s argument fails and moral realism is still in danger. (shrink)

This book aims at introducing Jeanne Hersch, holding together her biography and her philosophy and showing in which sense her whole path can be seen as a continuous endeavour to guarantee better conditions for the exercise of freedom to more and more people. Thanks to the investigation of Hersch's reflection on freedom throughout all her life, the reader should gain a tool to orient in the heterogeneous Herschian path. In addition, reconstructing the evolution of Hersch's reflection on freedom also highlights (...) the coherence among her varied engagements and texts, shedding new light on some of her minor contributions, which are still quite unknown. Thus, Jeanne Hersch's philosophy turns out to be a consistent contribution to existentialism and contemporary issues. (shrink)

Cet article étudie un corpus de quatre quotidiens marocains et analyse les orientations du discours développé par cette presse nationale dans les jours qui ont suivi l'événement dramatique de l'attentat de Madrid en mars 2004. Il montre, qu'à l'exception du journal islamiste, la presse marocaine ne cherche pas à nier l'existence d'un islamisme radical au Maroc mais fait front contre d'éventuelles stigmatisations du Maroc, du fait de l'origine des poseurs de bombe. Il souligne que ce traitement médiatique va (...) permettre une réappropriation nationale par le biais d'un discours éthique visant à ancrer des croyances et des habitudes plus universellement partagées.This article explores a collection of four Moroccan dailies and discourse analysis guidelines developed by the national press in the days following the tragic event of the Madrid bombings in March 2004. It shows that with the exception of the Islamist newspaper, the Moroccan press does not seek to deny the existence of radical Islam in Morocco but united against any stigma Morocco, is the origin of the layers bomb. He stressed that this treatment will allow media reappropriation nationally through an ethical discourse to anchor beliefs and habits more universally shared. (shrink)

La présente étude se veut une réflexion exploratoire sur la recherche féminine. Elle s’appuie, d’une part, sur les écrits de plus en plus nombreux ces deux dernières décennies sur la question féminine, où la femme est autant productrice qu’objet d’analyse et, d’autre part, sur une expérience de cinq années menée au sein d’un groupe de recherche pluridisciplinaire multilingue spécialisé dans les études sur la femme. Il s’agit en l’occurrence du Groupe Universitaire d’Etudes Féminines (G.U.E.F..

Si le multilinguisme est une chance pour la francophonie, le multiculturalisme qui peut l'accompagner est plus problématique, à cause de la complexité de cette notion comme des réalités psychologiques et sociales auxquelles elle renvoie. Nous avons cherché, dans cet article, à faire, du point de vue de la psycholinguistique, une description de la situation multilingue et multiculturelle du Maroc, en relation avec la francophonie, et en illustrant le propos par des exemples de la communication multilingue en situation professionnelle, la (...) langue française étant, pour l'essentiel, la langue de travail dans ce pays. Une hypothèse tente d'expliquer l'une des sources de malentendus, l'hybridation interculturelle est évoquée, et l'impérieuse nécessité de la connaissance mutuelle des cultures en présence affirmée, comme celle du changement d'attitude qu'impliqueraient de nouvelles représentations moins marquées par les stéréotypes commodes.Multilingualism can be considered as representing an opportunity for Francophony but multiculturalism is more problematic, both because of the complexity of the concept and the psychological and sociological realities which accompany it. In this paper, we tried to describe the multilingual and multicultural situation in Morocco as linked to Francophony from a psycholinguistic standpoint and provide examples of multilingual communication in professional situations given that French is the language used in the Moroccan work environment. We use one hypothesis to explain where misunderstandings might come from; we mention intercultural hybridization, and we affirm the pressing necessity for mutual and organized acknowledgement of the respective cultures and the need for attitudes to change regarding the new representations which are less influenced by too convenient stereotypes. The present study shows that the Internet functions as a gratifying context for the exchange of knowledge and values related to religious matters among youngsters in the Netherlands; they are in the midst of constructing a religious identity. Systematic content analysis complemented by qualitative research was carried out on Maroc.nl, a discussion forum primarily aimed at Moroccan youth. Inspired by Kemper's definitions of experiencing Islam, the recurrence of six dimensions of religious experience was looked into in 1,354 online messages. (...) The purpose of this study is to gain insight into the nature and the relative visibility of each of these dimensions in the online discussions under study. In addition, a number of context-bound and issue-related characteristics of the message were assessed through qualitative analysis, in an effort to find out what key issues were mainly dealt with, what normative statements were made, and how the informants related to one another. Este artículo se centra en la comparación entre el sultán marroquí Aḥmad al-Manṣūr y el santo de Fez Aḥmad Ibn ‛Abd Allāh Ma‛an. A través de esa comparación, se intenta subrayar el carácter comunicativo de la sacralización del poder, basada en la utilización de determinados recursos retóricos. El análisis de algunos de esos recursos en el caso de Aḥmad al-Mansūr demuestra la dificultad de sacralizar el poder, teniendo en cuenta especialmente el punto de vista de la recepción del discurso.

L’article montre tout d’abord, à travers l’étude de deux corpus de contes et de la gestion de faits récents de transsexualisme, en quoi la musique est constitutive de l’identité féminine dans l’ethnie maure de Mauritanie. La problématique est élargie au champ du religieux de l’aire arabo-musulmane, qui voit dans ce lien une menace pour l’ordre social et symbolique qu’il défend, avant d’être explicitée par le recours à des concepts issus de la psychanalyse. Les observations des activités de jeux et de construction de jouets se concentrent sur l’âge préscolaire et primaire. Le début des activités ludiques des filles et garçons à l’extérieur de la maison, dans le domaine public, se situe vers l’âge de trois ans dans l’Anti-Atlas et en général au Maroc. Toutefois, l’on trouve des enfants plus petits dehors, lorsqu’ils sont pris en charge par des filles à l’âge de l’école primaire ou par des adolescentes, moins souvent par des garçons (...) ou adolescents : les observations concernent donc des filles de l’Anti-Atlas âgées de 2 à 8 ans, à quelques exceptions près, les jeux de faire semblant, les poupées et autres objets bricolés, et examinent l’impact des jouets industriels sur la fabrication de jouets par les enfants. Moral progress is often modeled as an increase in moral knowledge and understanding, with achievements in moral reasoning seen as key drivers of progressive moral change. Contemporary discussion recognizes two (rival) accounts: knowledge-based and understanding-based theories of moral progress, with the latter recently contended as superior (Severini 2021 ). In this article, we challenge the alleged superiority of understanding-based accounts by conducting a comparative analysis of the theoretical advantages and disadvantages of both approaches. We assess them based on their (...) potential to meet the following criteria: (i) moral progress must be possible despite evolutionary and epistemic constraints on moral reasoning; (ii) it should be epistemically achievable to ordinary moral agents; and (iii) it should be explainable via doxastic change. Our analysis suggests that both accounts are roughly equally plausible, but knowledge-based accounts are slightly less demanding and more effective at explaining doxastic change. Therefore, contrary to the prevailing view, we find knowledge-based accounts of moral progress more promising. (shrink)

La préférence accordée à l'islam soufi, islam supposé pacifique, dans sa variante africaine, c'est-à-dire "noire", n'est que le nouvel avatar du primitivisme à l'âge du djihadisme. Le primitivisme, qui a fait de l'Afrique le continent du fétichisme à l'époque de la traite des esclaves, l'a ensuite caractérisé sous la colonisation comme le havre de l'"islam noir" et actuellement comme celui de l'islam soufi... Islam noir, Islam soufi : islams pacifiques? Or, l'Afrique, au cours de son histoire, n'a cessé de résister (...) à ce stéréotype à travers les nombreux djihads intervenus au XIXe siècle ou ceux qui se déroulent actuellement. Tout en soutenant les formes locales de l'islam soufi, en tant que contre-feux à l'islam radical, les pouvoirs africains et les puissances étrangères qui interviennent sur le continent entendent le renforcer en organisant une "déradicalisation" du personnel musulman ouest-africain dans d'autres pays, comme le Maroc, soumis également à la menace salafiste, wahhabite ou djihadiste. L'islam soufi apparaît ainsi, en définitive, comme la variante postcoloniale de l'"islam noir". (shrink)
